Abstract

Introduction: Caregivers play a crucial role in seeking timely treatment for individuals with mental disorders. However, reliance on traditional healing practices often leads to delayed medical care. This study aims to identify predictors of caregivers' treatment-seeking efforts, focusing on the role of stigma, motivation, relationship with the patient, and mental health literacy. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 301 caregivers of patients with mental disorders was conducted in two mental hospitals using cluster sampling. Variables studied include sociodemographic factors, caregiving burden, stigma, social support, motivation, mental health literacy, and treatment-seeking behavior. The data were collected through validated questionnaires as instruments. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to identify significant predictors of treatment-seeking behavior. Results: The study revealed that caregivers' relationship with the patient, perceived stigma, caregiving motivation, and mental health literacy significantly predicted treatment-seeking behavior (p < 0.05). Mental health literacy emerged as the strongest predictor (β = 0.349), followed by motivation (β = 0.202), stigma (β = -0.125), and relationship with the patient (β = -0.108). Together, these variables explained 23.4% of the variance in treatment-seeking efforts. Conclusions: Mental health literacy is the most influential factor in caregivers' efforts to seek medical treatment. Interventions aimed at increasing mental health literacy and reducing stigma are critical to enhancing caregivers' engagement with formal healthcare services. Findings support the development of culturally appropriate education and support programs to improve mental health outcomes.

Abstract

Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic is currently engulfing almost the entire world, including Indonesia. As of August 12, 2021, there were 3,774,155 positive cases of Covid-19 in Indonesia, 24,709 new cases and 113,664 deaths. The group of maternal is a vulnerable group, where there are 4.9% of pregnant women who are confirmed positive for COVID-19 from 1,483 confirmed cases that have accompanying condition data. Therefore, maternal, perinatal, postpartum and newborns are vulnerable targets for transmission of COVID-19 infection and this condition is feared to increase maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The general objective of this study was to determine the effect of the anxiety level of pregnant women on the choice of place of delivery during the COVID-19 period. This study used a survey method with a cross sectional approach. The study was conducted in Aceh Barat Regency, in March-June 2021. The population in this study were 637 third trimester pregnant women in 2021. The number of samples in this study was 246 samples calculated by the slovin formula and using accidental sampling technique. Data analysis used logistic regression test. The results of the bivariate analysis showed that there was a significant effect between the level of mild anxiety and the choice of place of delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic with a value (OR=5.6, 95% CI=2.04-15.3, p-value=0.001), . While the level of moderate anxiety had no significant effect on the choice of place of delivery during the Covid-19 period (OR=2.1, 95% CI=0.4-12.4, p-value=0.383) The level of severe anxiety in pregnant women was also not significant. effect on the choice of place of delivery during the Covid-19 period (OR=1.1, 95% CI=0, p-value=0.989). Expected to the government can improve education programs and supervision of the prevention and control of the Covid 19 pandemic, especially groups of pregnant women in order to minimize the possibility of excessive anxiety in pregnant women during the Covid 19 pandemic.

Abstract

The use of antipsychotics in schizophrenic patients has side effects during their use; changes that occur in people with mental disorders while taking drugs will certainly be related to the part and structure of the body's metabolism that is affected by the drug, causing changes in body weight of schizophrenic patients. This study aimed to identify the relationship between antipsychotic use and body mass index in schizophrenic patients. This cross-sectional study was conducted among patients with schizophrenia under antipsychotic medication. The research instruments used in the study are sociodemographic instruments and types of drug use. It was found that most of the patients were overweight (39%) and obese (38%), the majority of patients took second-class antipsychotic drugs (81%), and only some of them received first-class antipsychotics (19%). The increased use of second-generation antipsychotics and increased rate of overweight and obesity among patients with schizophrenia should receive special attention.

Abstract

Background: End-stage renal Disease (ESRD) is a major health problem for most people, with a large burden on healthcare systems and economies around the world. This disease requires various medical treatments in the form of hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or hemofiltration. The duration of treatment depends on the cause and extent of kidney damage; this will be more dangerous if the sufferer is not dialysis or transplanting the kidney. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 176 patients with end-stage chronic renal failure who underwent hemodialysis and were selected by purposive sampling. Data were collected using a patient perception questionnaire, a Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) questionnaire, and an end-stage renal disease adherence questionnaire (ESRD-AQ). Data were analyzed using frequency distribution, chi-square test, and binary logistic regression. Results: This study showed that the results of long hemodialysis (HD) (P = 0.000), long-suffering from ERDS (P = 0.000), social support (P = 0.006), perception of nurse services (P = 0.038) and availability of transportation (P = 0.031) were associated with compliance of CKD patients with hemodialysis. Duration of hemodialysis (HD) (P = 0.000; OR = 8.597) was the most dominant factor associated with compliance of CKD patients on hemodialysis. Conclusion: The length of hemodialysis (HD) is the most dominant factor associated with the adherence of CRF patients undergoing hemodialysis, where the length of HD can be a factor that affects a person's compliance with CRF when undergoing hemodialysis. In certain circumstances, long HD can be a reminder for someone to remember to undergo hemodialysis so that metabolic waste does not accumulate in the patient's body.

Abstract

Background: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), remain significant public health challenges in Indonesia. Despite advances in clinical management, patients lived experiences, particularly regarding disease-related knowledge and self-care practices, have received limited scholarly attention. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed using focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with 19 participants, including 12 patients with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and COPD; five primary health workers from community health center; and two district health office staff. The research was conducted between February and June 2024. Data were analyzed using descriptive phenomenological methods. Results: Three interrelated themes emerged. First, participants described delayed symptom recognition accompanied by limited initial understanding of their disease. Second, deeply entrenched lifestyle-related risk factors, including smoking, high salt and sugar intake, and physical inactivity. Third, inconsistent self-management practices following diagnosis. Although some participants attempted to adhere to medical advice and adopt healthier behaviors, these efforts were frequently constrained by inadequate health literacy, low motivation, and barriers to healthcare access. Persistent misconceptions regarding disease etiology were evident, reflected in culturally embedded terms such as “sweet urine” for diabetes and “lung pain” for COPD. Family support and religious beliefs were found to exert a dual influence, functioning as both facilitators and barriers to treatment adherence. Conclusion: Improving chronic disease outcomes in Indonesia requires the integration of culturally responsive health education, patient-centered communication, continuous follow-up, and health literacy interventions that are aligned with the sociocultural context of affected communities.

Abstract

Background:The floods and landslides that struck several provinces in Sumatra toward the end of 2025 resulted in substantial loss of life, large-scale displacement, and damage to public infrastructure. As of 29 December 2025, national disaster reports recorded around 1,140 deaths, 163 people missing, and nearly 400,000 displaced residents, with reconstruction needs estimated at approximately 51.82 trillion rupiah. These events underscore the intersection between disaster exposure, public-health system resilience, and psychosocial wellbeing. Objectives:This editorial reflects on the public-health and mental-health implications of the 2025 Sumatra disaster, draws on recent empirical and review evidence, and highlights priorities for strengthening community-based preparedness and recovery. Key Issues:Post-disaster settings are commonly characterized by increased risks of infectious disease, disruption of routine care for chronic and psychiatric conditions, and pressure on primary health-care services. Evidence from flood- and landslide-affected contexts in South and Southeast Asia indicates elevated symptoms of anxiety, depression, sleep disturbance, and post-traumatic stress among survivors, particularly among socio-economically vulnerable households, older adults, women, and adolescents. These psychosocial outcomes are shaped by prolonged displacement, livelihood loss, housing insecurity, and erosion of social support networks. Recommendations and Conclusion:The editorial emphasizes the importance of framing disaster risk reduction as a sustained public-health responsibility grounded in primary care and continuity of essential services, integrating psychosocial and mental-health care across preparedness, response, and recovery, and advancing inclusive, community-driven resilience strategies that prioritize vulnerable populations to protect dignity and wellbeing in future events.
