Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching speaking for intercultural communication from higher education lecturers’ point of view, focusing on pedagogical strategies, challenges, and outcomes. Through a qualitative case study involving three English department lecturers at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sorong, Indonesia. Data were collected via classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. Findings reveal that lecturers leveraged ICT tools such as video conferencing (e.g., Zoom), multimedia simulations, gamified platforms (e.g., Kahoot), and collaborative digital projects to support students’ intercultural competencies, including empathy, adaptability, and critical reflection. Structured activities like impromptu debates, role-plays, and multimedia case studies enabled authentic cross-cultural interactions, aligning with pedagogical frameworks such as the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). Despite ICT’s transformative potential, challenges included resource constraints (e.g., unstable internet, limited hardware), lecturer preparedness, and balancing theoretical knowledge with practical application. Lecturers adapted by integrating personal intercultural experiences, digital storytelling, and asynchronous tools (e.g., Padlet) to foster engagement. The study underscores ICT’s role in bridging cultural divides while highlighting the need for context-sensitive strategies, particularly in multilingual, resource-limited settings. Limitations include a small sample size and reliance on lecturer self-reports, suggesting future research should incorporate student perspectives.

Abstract

This study investigates how the integration of the Restitution Triangle with local wisdom from Bugis-Makassar culture supports the development of positive discipline in English learning. Conducted at a senior high school in Makassar, this qualitative study employed interviews, observations, and documentation to explore how students internalize responsibility and respectful behavior. The findings revealed that the implementation of restitution strategies, aligned with cultural values such as Sipakatau, Sipakainge', and Sipakalebbi, significantly contributed to students' behavioral awareness and self-regulation. The culturally adapted restitution model enabled students to reflect on their actions, repair harm, and engage actively in language learning. This research highlights the potential of combining restorative approaches with indigenous values to enhance classroom discipline and learner autonomy.

Abstract

This study explored students’ perceptions of the flipped classroom model in English teaching at SMAN 3 Sinjai. The flipped classroom, an innovative teaching approach, encourages students to study learning materials before class, enabling active participation during in-class sessions. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with 12 students and classroom observations. Findings revealed that students generally had positive perceptions of the flipped classroom. They appreciated its flexibility, prior access to materials, and opportunities for interactive discussions. However, challenges such as technological barriers, lack of direct support at home, and varying levels of student motivation were also noted. The study highlights the need for strategies to address these challenges and maximize the benefits of the flipped classroom in enhancing English learning outcomes.

The present study investigated the verbal expressions of professors at Universitas Negeri Makassar. The data consisted of teacher comments and other utterances. The researcher actively participated in all aspects of this inquiry, including the whole process from concept to data report. Data was obtained by audio video and observational methods. The data was gathered, documented, chosen to align with study objectives, organized into data sheets, and then analyzed and assessed using Searle's speech act theory. The study revealed that the teacher used many speech acts, including locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary activities. There were 122 words (51.69%) that had locutionary actions. There was a total of 107 illocutionary activities, accounting for 45.33% of the utterances, and 7 perlocutionary acts, or 2.97%. Teachers using speech acts in English instruction use them to validate, rectify, elucidate, apprise, and assert on behalf of their students. Directives include a range of directives, such as reminders, requests, instructions, and warnings. Expressive words include expressions of gratitude, warm greetings, praises, and dissatisfaction. Compliments are reciprocal in nature. Instructions were used by teachers the most often, accounting for 93 instances or 45.15 percent of all speech activities. Abstract

The rapid growth of digital technology has significantly influenced the landscape of higher education, including English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction. However, many lecturers still struggle to integrate technology effectively into their pedagogy. This study investigates EFL lecturers’ technological familiarity and knowledge in a maritime higher education context, aiming to identify their level of technological competence and the underlying factors influencing technology use in teaching. Employing a quantitative research design, data were collected through a questionnaire administered to 15 lecturers from a maritime higher education institution in Indonesia. The findings revealed that lecturers possess moderate familiarity with digital tools such as learning management systems and video conferencing platforms. However, their pedagogical integration of technology remains limited, with most using it mainly for material delivery rather than interactive or student-centered learning. The analysis indicates that the lecturers’ technological knowledge (TK) has not yet been sufficiently linked with pedagogical (PK) and content knowledge (CK), as conceptualized in the Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework. Barriers such as insufficient infrastructure, lack of institutional support, and limited digital pedagogical understanding were found to hinder optimal technology integration. The study suggests that sustainable professional development programs focusing on digital pedagogy and contextualized training are essential to enhance lecturers’ competence in integrating technology for effective EFL instruction in maritime education.
