Abstract

This research explores how English teachers perceive the use of mobile applications for vocabulary teaching at SMP Negeri 1 Wotu. Adopting a qualitative case study method, the study involved two English teachers, drawing data from interviews and classroom observations to capture their experiences with mobile-assisted learning tools. The findings indicate that both teachers view apps such as Quizizz and Kahoot as valuable for enhancing student engagement and making vocabulary lessons more dynamic and enjoyable. These platforms encourage active participation and motivation through gamified elements that align with students’ learning styles. Teachers observed increased enthusiasm and focus among students when digital tools were incorporated compared to traditional instruction. Despite these benefits, several challenges were identified that impede the effective use of mobile apps. Key obstacles included unreliable internet access, insufficient classroom resources, and disparities in students’ access to personal devices. Teachers also encountered technical issues when operating the apps and expressed uncertainty about their own digital preparedness, pointing to a lack of professional development. Furthermore, the assessment features within these apps were often limited to numerical feedback, offering little insight into deeper learning or language acquisition. The study concludes that while mobile apps show considerable promise for vocabulary teaching, their successful adoption depends on robust institutional support, improved infrastructure, well-designed implementation plans, and continuous teacher training. Addressing these factors is essential for ensuring that mobile-assisted vocabulary learning becomes a more inclusive and impactful practice in English classrooms.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of the restitution-based approach in promoting student responsibility in English classrooms at a senior high school in Makassar, Indonesia. The research is grounded in the need for discipline models that foster internal motivation and reflective behavior rather than fear-based compliance. The objective is to explore how restitution principles—namely personal ownership, internal regulation, and behavior restoration—support students in managing their actions within a culturally sensitive context. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with English teachers and eleventh-grade students, and analysis of student reflections. The participants were purposively selected based on their involvement in the restitution-based learning process. The findings reveal that the restitution approach allowed students to correct their behavior voluntarily, admit mistakes without fear of punishment, and express a sense of responsibility through reflective dialogues. Cultural values such as sipakatau (mutual respect) and lempu (honesty) were observed to reinforce the internalization of positive discipline and behavioral accountability. The study concludes that the restitution-based approach is effective in cultivating student responsibility, especially when integrated with local cultural values in the EFL classroom context. It encourages student autonomy, empathy, and initiative—key components for personal and academic growth. It is recommended that English teachers incorporate restorative questioning and student reflection techniques to foster a positive, responsibility-centered classroom environment.

Abstract

This research elucidated and examined the practice of teacher speech actions in the context of teaching English as a second language. The present study used qualitative research approaches. The present study investigated the verbal expressions of professors at Universitas Negeri Makassar. The data consisted of teacher comments and other utterances. The researcher actively participated in all aspects of this inquiry, including the whole process from concept to data report. Data was obtained by audio video and observational methods. The data was gathered, documented, chosen to align with study objectives, organized into data sheets, and then analyzed and assessed using Searle's speech act theory. The study revealed that the teacher used many speech acts, including locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary activities. There were 122 words (51.69%) that had locutionary actions. There was a total of 107 illocutionary activities, accounting for 45.33% of the utterances, and 7 perlocutionary acts, or 2.97%. Teachers using speech acts in English instruction use them to validate, rectify, elucidate, apprise, and assert on behalf of their students. Directives include a range of directives, such as reminders, requests, instructions, and warnings. Expressive words include expressions of gratitude, warm greetings, praises, and dissatisfaction. Compliments are reciprocal in nature. Instructions were used by teachers the most often, accounting for 93 instances or 45.15 percent of all speech activities. Abstract

The rapid growth of digital technology has significantly influenced the landscape of higher education, including English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction. However, many lecturers still struggle to integrate technology effectively into their pedagogy. This study investigates EFL lecturers’ technological familiarity and knowledge in a maritime higher education context, aiming to identify their level of technological competence and the underlying factors influencing technology use in teaching. Employing a quantitative research design, data were collected through a questionnaire administered to 15 lecturers from a maritime higher education institution in Indonesia. The findings revealed that lecturers possess moderate familiarity with digital tools such as learning management systems and video conferencing platforms. However, their pedagogical integration of technology remains limited, with most using it mainly for material delivery rather than interactive or student-centered learning. The analysis indicates that the lecturers’ technological knowledge (TK) has not yet been sufficiently linked with pedagogical (PK) and content knowledge (CK), as conceptualized in the Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework. Barriers such as insufficient infrastructure, lack of institutional support, and limited digital pedagogical understanding were found to hinder optimal technology integration. The study suggests that sustainable professional development programs focusing on digital pedagogy and contextualized training are essential to enhance lecturers’ competence in integrating technology for effective EFL instruction in maritime education.

Abstract

In the 21st century, a paradigm shift in education is needed. This is especially true for the Independent Curriculum, which focuses on the needs of students. However, many educators still face difficulties in understanding and using new learning strategies that are appropriate for 21st century and digital era skills (4Cs: Critical Thinking, Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity). The lack of systematic and needs-based training, especially through technology integration, innovative learning methods, and authentic assessments, is a major factor. Through the application of the Training of Trainers (TOT) approach in 21st century learning design, this service program aims to increase teacher capacity. This program utilizes Microsoft-based technology to enhance the learning experience with the support of Microsoft Indonesia and Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert (MIEE) Indonesia. This training includes the use of apps such as Microsoft Teams, OneNote, and PowerPoint to help teachers create a more flexible and inspiring learning environment. In order for the training to be in accordance with the needs of teachers, the Capacity Building and Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) program involves stages to identify needs, training by Master Trainers, and dissemination of knowledge by participants to other teachers. The results show that this method is effective in improving teachers' skills and extending the benefits of training to more teachers. === Pada abad ke-21, perubahan paradigma dalam pendidikan diperlukan.
