Abstract

Research on the use of water hyacinth (WH) to improve the quality of polluted water has been widely reported, but discussions on the ability of WH to clear turbid water are still rare. This research examines the possibility of using WH as a natural clarifier for Lake Bata. Treatments with 3 variations in the percentage of lake closure with WH cultivation (25, 50, and 75%) were applied for 40 days with 3 repetitions. Water quality and turbidity measurements were carried out every 4 days. The data was analyzed descriptively in graphical form to see a model of these changes. It was found that the pollutants Fe, Hg, nitrate, phosphate and ammonia were present in very small and safe quantities, but the water turbidity level did not meet the standards of the Indonesian Minister of Health yet. During the WH growth, the turbidity decreasing follows the equation Y(25) = - 0.114x + 28.52; Y(50) = -0.195x + 29.83; and Y(75) = -0.235x + 30.14 for cover percentages of 25, 50 and 75% respectively, where y for the turbidity (NTU) and x for WH growth time (days). To meet turbidity standards, WH coverage percentages of 25, 50, and 75%, require cultivation periods of 32, 28, and 24 days, respectively.

Abstract

Yam starch-based bioplastics generally exhibit low mechanical properties. However, the addition of shrimp waste powder has been shown to improve the tensile strength and elongation of yam starch bioplastics, with the enhancement occurring within an optimal range. Glycerol, on the other hand, is known to affect bioplastic properties in a dose-dependent manner. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of shrimp waste powder and glycerol ratios on the characteristics of yam starch-derived bioplastics.  A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) was used, consisting of five treatment levels with three replications. The treatment levels were shrimp waste powder to glycerol ratios of 0:3, 0.5:2.5, 1:2, 1.5:1.5, and 2:1. The results showed that the shrimp waste powder to glycerol ratio significantly affected the tensile strength, elongation, thickness and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of the bioplastics, but had no significant effect on water absorption.  The biodegradability of bioplastic in soil ranged from 144 to 149 days.   The best treatment was 1:2 ratio of shrimp waste powder to glycerol, which resulted in a tensile strength of 19.26 N/mm2, elongation of 84.09%, thickness of 0.35 mm, water absorption of 30.79%, WVTR of 20.80 g/m2.h and a faster decomposition rate compared to synthetic plastics.

Abstract

Contemporary social, cultural, and technological developments present new challenges for the practice of Islamic da'wah, particularly in maintaining social harmony and preventing identity-based conflict. This article aims to analyze the concept of peace education as an orientation for contemporary Islamic da'wah in building a culture of peace, tolerance, and social justice. This research employs a qualitative approach with a literature review method drawn from the Quran, Hadith, and literature on da'wah, Islamic education, and peace studies. The results demonstrate that peace education is strongly relevant to fundamental Islamic values such as rahmatan lil 'alamin (mercy for all the worlds), brotherhood (ukhuwah), justice, and deliberation. The integration of peace education principles into Islamic da'wah can be realized through an educative, dialogical, inclusive, and contextual approach, in both formal and informal settings. This approach serves not only as a means of transforming Islamic values but also as a preventative strategy to reduce the potential for conflict and radicalism in society. Thus, peace education becomes a strategic orientation for contemporary Islamic da'wah in creating a peaceful, moderate, and civilized society.

Abstract

Industrial rubber wastewater contains high levels of organic substances (proteins, carotenoids, organic salts, and lipids in residual latex) that can be observed in high concentrations of BOD5 (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand). Pineapple waste is an organic waste that can be utilized as a bio-adsorbent to remove pollutants from wastewater. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of pineapple crown waste activated with KOH in removing BOD5 and COD in rubber industry wastewater. The effectiveness of the adsorbent was tested in batches at varying adsorbent dosages of 0.5 g, 1.0 g, and 1.5 g at stirring speeds of 50 rpm, 100 rpm, and 150 rpm. The adsorption isotherm model was analyzed using the Langmuir and the Freundlich models. The results showed that the optimum BOD5 removal rate in rubber industry wastewater using pineapple crown adsorbent was achieved at an adsorbent dosage of 0.5 g with a stirring speed of 100 rpm, resulting in an adsorption capacity of 62.78 mg/g and a removal efficiency of 94.35%. The optimum COD removal was achieved at an adsorbent dosage of 0.5 g, with a stirring speed of 100 rpm, resulting in an adsorption capacity of 199.816 mg/g and a removal efficiency of 95.15%. The adsorption isotherm model most suitable for both BOD5 and COD is the Freundlich model. Increasing the adsorbent dosage does not significantly enhance removal efficiency.

Abstract

Developing students’ critical thinking skills remains a central challenge in contemporary science education, especially in physics learning that demands analytical reasoning and reflective understanding. Integrative pedagogical models such as the STEM-R (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Religious Values) approach have emerged to promote deeper engagement by connecting scientific inquiry with moral reflection. This research aimed to analyze the influence of STEM-R-based Problem-Based Learning (PBL) on students’ critical thinking skills compared with conventional PBL. A quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group was employed, involving 46 students from MAN 2 Kota Jambi, consisting of 24 in the experimental class and 22 in the control class. The experimental group received PBL integrated with STEM-R, while the control group was taught using standard PBL without reflective or integrative elements. Data were collected through validated critical thinking assessments and analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk test, Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, and Mann–Whitney U Test. The findings indicated significant improvement in both groups, with a higher increase in the experimental class (Z = 4.108, p < 0.001) than in the control class (Z = 2.944, p = 0.003). The between-group comparison showed no significant difference (p = 0.288), although the experimental class achieved a higher mean trend. These results suggest that embedding reflective and scientific integration through STEM-R can enhance students’ analytical and evaluative reasoning in physics learning.

Abstract

The Prophet Muhammad's preaching was not only oriented toward spiritual transformation but also touched on the social and economic dimensions of Arab society. This article aims to analyze the relationship between preaching and Islamic economic principles from a socio-historical perspective as a contributing factor to the success of the Prophet Muhammad's preaching. This research uses a qualitative approach with library research, drawing on sources from the Quran, Hadith, and classical and contemporary Islamic historical and economic literature. The results indicate that Islamic economic principles such as monotheism, justice, honesty, balance, the prohibition of usury, and strengthening social solidarity through zakat and sadaqah played a significant role in building social trust and economic stability. The implementation of these principles not only improved the economic order but also strengthened the moral legitimacy of the Prophet Muhammad's preaching within the communities of Mecca and Medina. Thus, the relationship between preaching and Islamic economics is integrative and mutually reinforcing, serving as a crucial foundation for the success of Islamic preaching in its early development. This study is expected to provide a conceptual contribution to the development of Islamic preaching oriented toward social justice and the welfare of the people in the contemporary era.

Abstract

Purple yam tuber is known to contain a lot of bioactive components useful for human health. This study was conducted to utilize the tuber in form of purple yam flour for crackers processing and to understand the effect of purple yam flour concentration on the characteristics of crackers.  A completely randomized design was applied using several concentrations of purple yam flour (0, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%) and 3 replications. The concentration of purple yam flour affects volume expansion, color values (L*, a*, and b*) and anthocyanin content of the crackers, but did not affect its water content and texture. The higher concentration of purple yam flour decreased volume expansion, L*, b*, and overall acceptance of the crackers, but increased the anthocyanin content and a* values.  This research proposes that 30% purple yam flour shall be applied to partly substitute wheat flour in crackers processing.  At this concentration, crackers were accepted by the panelist (like it slightly) and has hardness value 287.2 gF, L* 70.35, a* 11.12, b* 20.18, 2.5% water, and anthocyanin content 179.6 mg cyanidin3-glucoside equivalent/g.
