Abstract

The accuracy of the Qibla direction holds paramount importance in Islamic worship practices, particularly in historical mosques where traditional methods intersect with modern calculations. This study examines the case of the Sunan Geseng Great Mosque in Indonesia, established circa 1400 AD, where traditional supernatural methods of Qibla determination converge with contemporary astronomical calculations. This research investigates the historical method of Qibla direction determination and analyzes community perspectives on potential recalibration, examining the balance between preserving historical authenticity and ensuring religious accuracy. This qualitative research employs historical analysis and astronomical approaches. Data collection involved in-depth interviews with six key informants including religious leaders, mosque administrators, and community members, supplemented by astronomical measurements and historical document analysis. Astronomical calculations revealed a 4° 54' 55.5" northward deviation in the mosque's Qibla direction. Historical analysis indicated that the original direction was determined through a supernatural method by Sunan Geseng's teacher. Interview findings revealed three key responses to potential calibration: religious leaders acknowledged the deviation and adjusted prayer rows accordingly; community leaders supported row adjustment without structural changes; and certain community members opposed changes based on ancestral reverence. This study contributes to understanding the dynamics between traditional methods and modern calculations in determining Qibla direction, while providing insights for managing similar cases where religious accuracy intersects with cultural preservation.

Abstract

Purpose - This study explores the important role of music in practical implications for the modern Islamic da'wah context. Method - This study uses library research, with integrative and connective literature analysis as the main method, to connect various perspectives from various previous studies. Result  -  Music in Islamic da'wah is not just a means of conveying messages but a transformative force capable of stirring emotions, building deep spiritual bonds, and challenging the traditional boundaries of da'wah. With its ability to trigger emotional feelings, compassion, and spiritual reflection, music can make religious messages more alive and relevant amidst the dynamics of the modern world. Implication – The use of music in conveying Islamic messages through da'wah must consider ethics, content regulations, and understanding of different cultures. In facing this challenge, intercultural collaboration, education, and awareness of the impact of music in a religious context are needed. Originality/Value - Music is not just a medium but a tool capable of helping individuals internalize religious values, facilitating more profound understanding, and stimulating deep spiritual reflection in humans.

Abstract

Abstract: This study has a comprehensive objective of understanding the practical implications of environmental protection within the framework of Islamic law, taking into account the balance of human needs and ecological preservation. The method used is library research with literature analysis through synthesis and integration of information from various relevant sources, such as books, scientific articles, and other documents related to the research topic. The findings of the study show that environmental protection in the framework of Islamic law not only provides a solid moral and ethical foundation but also challenges the conventional paradigm in natural resource management by offering a holistic approach that integrates spiritual, social, and ecological values. Through maqasid al-sharia, environmental protection becomes an integral part of the objectives of sharia, namely preserving life (hifz al-nafs) and ecological sustainability (hifz al-biāh) by providing ethical guidance to prevent overexploitation while encouraging sustainable innovation. Thus, Islamic law not only responds to the challenges of the global environmental crisis but also offers a model of sustainability that brings together spiritual, ethical, and practical values in creating harmony between human needs and the preservation of nature, making it relevant as a strategic solution for the modern world.

Abstract

Human trafficking and sexual exploitation remain complex global problems. Islamic law, as one of the legal systems in the world, has a strategic role in participating in overcoming this problem. However, the Islamic legal norms implementation requires support from the state and society. This research discusses the strategic role and challenges of the law in overcoming human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The research method used normative Islamic law with a philosophical approach. The analysis technique used prescriptive analysis, with the analysis process using Islamic legal reasoning. The research results show that Islamic law has a strategic role in resolving the problem of human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The argument is that, philosophically, Islamic law emphasizes the importance of maintaining human honor and dignity, while theoretically, Islamic law recognizes two main concepts in punishment, namely hudud and ta'zir. Hudud is a punishment determined by Allah and has clear rules in the Quran and Hadith. Meanwhile, ta'zir is a punishment determined by a judge for the benefit of society. The challenges of Islamic law in overcoming human trafficking and sexual exploitation are a lack of understanding of Islamic legal norms, which requires human values and justice; Islamic law is not implementable; and there is a perception that the principles of Islamic law can only be applied in Islamic countries. Therefore, global Muslim countries and communities are the main actors in maximizing the application of Islamic legal principles in overcoming human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

Abstract

This study aims to understand, explain, and address the complexities of oppression in a multicultural and multiethnic society such as ASEAN. This study uses a law-based methodological approach that integrates intersectionality, postcolonial, feminist, critical race, and queer theories concerning international legal instruments. Based on the results of the study, mapping the landscape of intersectionality in ASEAN reveals how the interaction of gender, race, class, religion, and sexual orientation creates multiple discriminations, such as those experienced by female migrant workers, the LGBTQ+ community, and religious and ethnic minorities, who are often marginalised in legal systems and public policies. While international instruments demand protection without discrimination, inconsistent implementation of laws in ASEAN exacerbates existing structural injustices. Therefore, a transformative strategy for social justice in ASEAN requires a rights-based approach that focuses on empowering vulnerable groups, their active participation in decision-making processes, and legal reforms that integrate principles of intersectionality to ensure equitable access to justice. This approach can only succeed if ASEAN countries align domestic policies with international standards, strengthen inclusive legal systems, and empower regional mechanisms such as the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) to more effectively uphold human rights in the region.

Abstract

In this paper, the researcher analyses and explains polygamy as a form of domestic violence from the perspective of positive Indonesian law and how it critiques Law No. 1 of 1974 on Marriage by examining Law No. 23 of 2004 on the Elimination of Domestic Violence in Indonesia. Using a literature review, this study found that polygamy carried out without fulfilling the conditions stipulated in the marriage law and Islamic Law Compilation (KHI) can be a form of domestic violence. This is because polygamy committed without the first wife's consent and without regard to the family's welfare can cause injustice and imbalance in the husband-wife relationship and damage the family concerned. Polygamy cases, if associated with Law No. 23 of 2004 concerning the elimination of domestic violence, are a form of psychological violence that can be criminalised and charged with Domestic Violence Law No. 23 of 2004, specifically Article five, which states that "every person is prohibited from committing acts of domestic violence against persons within the scope of their household, whether committed directly or indirectly, to cause pain or misery or suffer physically, sexually, psychologically, and or domestic neglect, including domestic neglect". The criminal penalty can be imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of up to 9 million rupiahs. Suppose the psychological attack causes illness or prevents the victim from doing their job to the extent that their daily activities are disrupted. In that case, they can face imprisonment of up to four months or a fine of three million rupiahs.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the innovative strategies implemented by the government to strengthen religious tolerance in a multicultural society. Facing the challenges of harmony and understanding between religions, the government's role in promoting religious tolerance is becoming increasingly important. This study uses library research methods and qualitative approaches with content analysis techniques to produce a comprehensive data analysis by the principles of qualitative research. The study results show that the government's effective strategy in promoting religious tolerance in multicultural societies includes inclusive policies, multicultural education, interfaith dialogue, law enforcement, and inter-agency cooperation. By implementing these strategies, multicultural societies can live harmoniously, respect each other, and build a peaceful religious life. To achieve peaceful religious life in a multicultural society, individuals, religious groups, governments, and social institutions must respect diversity and jointly promote harmony between religions. This collaboration will be key to realizing a peaceful and harmonious religious life.
