Abstract

This research aims to identify variations in syntactic errors that are often made by students in writing English paragraphs and to find out the types of errors that most commonly occur in students. This research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach using analytical methods. data is collected through observation and measurement, while the data collection instruments consist of observation sheets and written tests. The results of the analysis show that there are several types of errors found in student writing, namely errors in the categories of syntax and surface strategy. These errors include errors in noun phrases, verb phrases, transformations. Apart from that, types of errors were also found in the surface category, such as errors of omission, addition, form errors, sequence errors. In student writing, the most dominant syntactic errors occur in noun phrase. However, in the communicative taxonomy category, only a few errors were found, which shows that even though there are syntactic errors in phrases or sentences, the message conveyed can still be understood by the reader.

Abstract

The use of tree diagrams serves as a valuable tool for students to grasp the structure of a sentence and conduct analyses based on both its surface and deep structures. Proficiency in creating syntactic tree diagrams can be employed as an indicator of a student's ability to scrutinize sentences and their structures comprehensively. While conducting this research, We found a lot of articles about tree diagrams in syntax. However, we haven't seen many articles that discuss students' challenges and solutions when learning tree diagrams, particularly for teachers. This research used descriptive and qualitative methods. We conducted interviews, both directly or through messages, with a few participants from the same department at a University. In this research, researchers took 6 student participants. Categorization challenges emerge as a central concern, with participants highlighting the difficulty in identifying and categorizing words within a sentence. This underscores the necessity for learners to develop a robust grasp of parts of speech and their respective functions in constructing meaningful tree diagrams

Abstract

This study explores syntactic variations in bilingual code-switching, focusing on Englishmixed structures. Code-switching, the shift between two languages within a single conversation or discourse, frequently occurs in multilingual settings and can be influenced by various linguistic and social factors. The aim of this research is to analyze patterns and syntactic structures in sentences containing a mixture of English and another language, revealing how simultaneous use of two languages creates unique sentence structures. Using a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews, the study involved 10 bilingual respondents who actively use English alongside their native language in daily conversations. The interview data were analyzed thematically to identify common patterns in syntactic code-switching, such as word order, pronoun usage, and phrase structure differences. Findings indicate that code-switching occurs not only at the lexical level but also at the syntactic level, with significant variations in sentence structures influenced by grammatical differences between English and the native language. The study reveals that factors like conversational context, social setting, and language proficiency level also influence syntactic forms in code-switching. The implications of this study provide new insights into how grammatical rules from two different languages can interact and adapt, enriching our understanding of language adaptability among bilingual speakers. These findings contribute to applied linguistics and can be applied in language education as well as cross-cultural communication studies.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the concept of diversity within the Sapta Darma belief system, and the strategies adopted by its adherents to navigate social change. This research employs a library research approach. According to Mestika Zed, library research involves a systematic process of collecting, reading, annotating, and analyzing data from various scholarly sources. It encompasses the examination of reference books, prior research findings, and academic literature to establish a theoretical foundation for the study. Literature review is also used as a data collection technique by analyzing books, notes, and reports relevant to the research problem. The findings indicate that the Sapta Darma belief system upholds a profound understanding of diversity, reflected in its principles of tolerance and inclusivity toward different societal groups. The Sapta Darma community employs adaptive and flexible strategies to respond to social, political, and cultural transformations while preserving the essence of its teachings. These adaptation strategies include modifications in worship practices, societal engagement, and the integration of technological advancements, particularly in the use of social media. This research provides new insights into how local belief systems sustain their existence and remain resilient amid continuous societal changes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze middle school students' perceptions of using the Lemon8 application to enhance their English vocabulary mastery. Using a qualitative method with a case study approach, this research involved ten students who had used Lemon8 for one month. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using thematic analysis based on Vygotsky's sociocultural theory, which emphasizes the role of social interaction in learning. The findings indicate that 80% of students found Lemon8 engaging, 70% considered the application effective in improving vocabulary, and 80% stated that it was easily accessible. However, several challenges were identified, such as its content being more focused on entertainment rather than education and the lack of practice and evaluation features to measure students’ vocabulary development. Additionally, technical challenges such as unstable internet connectivity and limited access to devices were also observed in this study. These findings suggest that Lemon8 has potential as an interactive learning tool to support English vocabulary mastery, but further development is needed to optimize its effectiveness in formal educational settings.
