Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study identifies common contrastive errors in English grammar made by Indonesian EFL learners, along with their causes and solutions. Such errors often arise from structural differences between the learner's first language (L1) and English (L2), potentially leading to misunderstandings. Using a descriptive qualitative research design, data were collected from eleven undergraduate students in the English Education program at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara. Data collection methods included grammar tests and surveys to explore the underlying causes of errors. Analysis revealed that common errors included tense usage, subject-verb agreement, article usage, and preposition errors. These mistakes are attributed to language transfer, interlanguage phenomena, and a lack of understanding of English structures. The study recommends teaching strategies such as drilling activities, corrective feedback, context-based learning, and comparative grammar analysis to mitigate these errors. By implementing these approaches, it is hoped that learners will enhance their understanding and application of English grammar more effectively, ultimately improving their communication skills in English.

Abstract

The human soul has two sides, good and bad. It is very important and urgent to pay attention to. A noble soul, is not pleased with anything, except for something that has the highest, noblest and most commendable (best) end result. As for the lowly soul, he only revolves around lowly matters, he approaches these lowly matters as a fly lands on dirt. A noble and high soul will not be pleased with acts of tyranny, vulgarity, theft and betrayal, because his soul is bigger and more noble than all of that. Meanwhile, a lowly and lowly soul is the opposite. Then every soul will tend to something that is in harmony and in accordance with it. Nafs in the context of talking about humans refers to the side in humans that has the potential to be good or bad. Research on human nature at least contains human traits that are naturally inherent in humans, or laws that apply to the human psyche, in this case the concept of nafs in the Koran is very important. The importance of research on the nafs is not only limited to needs, but also to the interests of parsing, predicting and controlling human behavior, both individually and as a group, both in relation to the field of da'wah or education as well as the interests of society in national development.

Abstract

This research explores students' awareness of sentence construction, focusing on the role of misplaced words and phrases in one-clause sentences. This issue poses a significant challenge for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners, especially in Indonesia, where these errors often obscure meaning and hinder effective communication. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach to understand how students realize common sentence construction errors, such as dangling and ambiguous modifiers. Through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations, it was found that mother tongue interference and inadequate teaching methods contribute to students' difficulties in accurate sentence construction. The findings suggest the need for a more focused teaching approach to improve students' understanding of correct sentence structure and to help them identify and correct errors independently.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze PBI UINSU students’ understanding of imperative sentences in English syntax. The research employed a quantitative descriptive method involving five students from the English Education Study Program at Universitas Islam Negeri Sumatera Utara. Data were collected through a Google Form questionnaire consisting of ten multiple-choice questions and one Likert-scale item focusing on the definition, structure, verb forms, subject omission, negative imperatives, politeness, and students’ self-confidence in using imperative sentences. The findings reveal that students demonstrate a strong understanding of the basic syntactic features of imperative sentences, including correct verb forms, implicit subjects, and negative constructions. However, minor difficulties were identified in recognizing polite imperative forms, indicating challenges in pragmatic aspects. In addition, although students reported feeling confident in using imperative sentences, the results suggest a gap between grammatical knowledge and pragmatic awareness. In conclusion, while PBI UINSU students possess solid foundational knowledge of imperative sentence structures, further instructional emphasis on pragmatic competence, particularly politeness strategies, is necessary.
