Abstract

This study aims to develop a challenge-based corrosion e-book with a chassis coating context using the Four Steps Teaching Material Development (4STMD) method and to evaluate its effectiveness in enhancing vocational students’ concept understanding and creative thinking skills. A design and development research approach was employed, comprising design, development, and evaluation phases. The e-book was developed through the 4STMD stages of selection, structuring, characterization, and didactic reduction, yielding ten concept labels on corrosion and redox reactions contextualized within automotive chassis maintenance. The product was validated by expert reviewers and tested with 20 grade XI students of a Light Vehicle Engineering program at a vocational school in Bandung, Indonesia. Expert evaluation indicated that the e-book was highly feasible across content, language, presentation, and graphic criteria. Student comprehensibility reached an average of 92%. A one-group pretest–posttest design with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed statistically significant improvements (α = 0.05) in both concept understanding and creative thinking skills, the latter measured through Torrance’s indicators of fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. A Spearman correlation of r = .985 confirmed a very strong positive relationship between the two outcomes. These findings suggest that integrating challenge-based learning with the 4STMD method in a vocationally relevant e-book effectively may support higher-order thinking skills in vocational chemistry education students.

Abstract

Review artikel ini memfokuskan pada analisis penggunaan model pembelajaran inkuiri sebagai strategi untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa. Metode naratif review digunakan untuk mengevaluasi 16 jurnal terkait penerapan model pembelajaran inkuiri. Dari hasil review, terungkap bahwa model-model yang sering digunakan adalah guided inquiry learning dan structured inquiry learning. Pendekatan ini kemudian diterapkan untuk mengukur kemampuan siswa, termasuk kemampuan berpikir kritis, pemecahan masalah, dan hasil belajar secara umum. Analisis menyimpulkan bahwa model pembelajaran inkuiri memberikan dampak positif dalam konteks pembelajaran. Dengan melibatkan siswa dalam proses penyelidikan aktif, model inkuiri memungkinkan mereka untuk mengembangkan keterampilan berpikir kritis dan kemampuan pemecahan masalah. Selain itu, model ini juga meningkatkan hasil belajar secara keseluruhan. Implikasinya adalah bahwa pendekatan inkuiri dapat menjadi pilihan yang efektif bagi pendidik untuk memperkuat pengalaman belajar siswa dan meningkatkan pencapaian akademik mereka. Studi lebih lanjut dapat fokus pada pengembangan praktik terbaik dalam menerapkan model pembelajaran inkuiri di berbagai konteks pendidikanThis review article focuses on analyzing the use of the inquiry-based learning model as a strategy to enhance students' abilities. The narrative review method is used to evaluate 16 journals related to the application of the inquiry-based learning model. From the review results, it is revealed that the frequently used models are guided inquiry learning and structured inquiry learning. This approach is then applied to measure students' abilities, including critical thinking, problem-solving, and overall learning outcomes. The analysis concludes that the inquiry-based learning model has a positive impact in the learning context. By involving students in active investigative processes, the inquiry model enables them to develop critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities. Additionally, this model also enhances overall learning outcomes. The implication is that the inquiry approach can be an effective choice for educators to reinforce students' learning experiences and improve their academic achievements. Further studies could focus on developing best practices in implementing the inquiry-based learning model in various educational contexts.
