Abstract

Specializing thinking is a mathematical thinking process that is very important in the mathematics learning process. Specializing thinking is thinking by starting with special things. The application of specializing thinking can be an effective strategy for teachers to improve students' mathematical thinking abilities in dealing with various problems. This research aims to describe students' specializing forms of thinking in solving problems of arithmetic sequences and series. This research method is descriptive qualitative research with a case study approach. The subjects in this research were 2 class X high school students who successfully solved arithmetic sequence and series problems. The instruments used are tests and interviews. The data in this research are the results of the subject's work and the results of interview transcripts. The research results show that two forms of specializing thinking were found in solving arithmetic sequences and series problems, that is explicit schematic representation and implicit schematic representation. It is hoped that the results of this research can provide a valuable contribution to mathematics teachers in designing more meaningful learning.

Abstract

Metacognition is described as thinking about thinking and is often considered as a second-level cognition that is different from ordinary cognition. This study aims to describe the metacognition of students with adversity quotient (AQ) climber and camper types in solving numeracy tasks. The research used a qualitative-descriptive approach with the subjects of four students of class VIII MTs who were selected using purposive sampling technique based on the results of the Adversity Response Profile (ARP) test. Data were collected through numeracy tasks solving tests, task-based interviews, and observations, then analysed using thematic analysis involving data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that AQ climber type students demonstrated metacognition consisting of metacognitive awareness, regulation, and evaluation with the steps of rethinking prior knowledge, planning the solution, and assessing the work. Meanwhile, AQ camper students showed metacognition in the form of metacognitive awareness, evaluation, and organisation with the steps of rethinking knowledge, evaluating abilities, redesigning plans, and evaluating completion steps. This study provides insight into the variation of metacognition based on AQ type, which can be used to design student character-based mathematics learning strategies.

Abstract

This research is a descriptive qualitative research that aims to describe students’ mathematical representations in solving HOTS-based mathematical problems. This research was conducted at MTs Putri Al-Huda, Malang City. The subjects of this study were 2 grade VIII students selected based on high and medium abilities. Written tests and interview guidelines were the instruments in this study. The data analysis technique in this study used the Miles and Huberman method, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The research results show that high-ability subjects produced verbal mathematical representations at the stage of understanding the problem and checking again, generate symbolic representations at the planning stages, implementing the plan, and checking again. Meanwhile, subjects with medium abilities produced verbal representations at the stage of understanding the problem, symbolic representations at the stage of making and implementing plans. Subjects with medium abilities did not produce any representations at the stage of checking again.

Abstract

This study investigates how junior high school students adopt and shift roles during group discussions while solving Fermi problems, using Positioning Theory as an analytical framework. The study employs a qualitative-descriptive approach with the subjects of eight students of class IX PD-CI MTsN 1 Kediri who were divided into two groups selected using purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected from audio and video recordings of group discussions, which were transcribed and coded for patterns of positioning, negotiation, and interaction, along with students’ written responses. The findings reveal that students take on different roles: novices often participate passively, facilitators organize the discussion and encourage participation, while experts contribute key information and guide reasoning. Some groups demonstrated dynamic role shifts throughout the activity, reflecting increased engagement and conceptual understanding, whereas others maintained more static participation patterns, limiting opportunities for collaborative idea exploration. This study uniquely analyzes role shifts among junior high school students through Positioning Theory in the context of Fermi problems. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring and structuring collaborative activities to promote equitable participation. For mathematics educators, understanding positioning patterns can inform instructional strategies, such as role rotation, supporting novice participation, and designing Fermi problems that foster active collaboration

Abstract

Mathematics story problems are important to learn because they relate to contextual life. In the preliminary study, many MTs Qita Malang students made mistakes. One way to find out students' mistakes is to explore how they think mathematically. Therefore, the researcher conducted a study that aimed to describe how students think mathematically in solving mathematical story problems. The instruments used were test sheets and interview guidelines. This research is a qualitative-descriptive research that was attended by 15 grade IX students of MTs Qita Malang. Three research subjects were selected based on their ability level (high, medium, low). The results showed that students were highly capable through all aspects in the entry and attack phases, but missed the check and extend aspects in the review phase. Moderately capable students go through all aspects in the entry phase and skip the why aspect in the attack phase and only succeed through the reflect aspect in the review phase. Low ability students go through the entry phase of the know and want aspect, but skip the maybe and why aspect in the attack phase, and only through the reflect aspect in the review phase.
