Abstract

This study explores the uniqueness of Mandailing traditional cuisine, focusing on the cultural and nutritional significance of its iconic smoked fish dishes, such as smoked fish rendang, smoked fish curry, smoked fish with chili sauce, and smoked fish with vegetables. These dishes showcase the traditional fish smoking practices developed as a preservation method, allowing the Mandailing community to adapt to the abundance of rivers and natural resources in their highland environment. Smoking fish not only extended its shelf life but also became a cornerstone of Mandailing culinary identity, reflecting the community’s ingenuity and resourcefulness. Mandailing cuisine is deeply influenced by neighboring culinary traditions from West Sumatra and North Tapanuli, resulting in a rich fusion of bold flavors, often characterized using coconut milk and fresh spices. The preparation of smoked fish combines traditional high-heat cooking techniques with unique flavor profiles that distinguish Mandailing dishes from other Indonesian cuisines. This research highlights the importance of Mandailing smoked fish practices in sustaining local food systems and preserving cultural heritage. By emphasizing both cultural and nutritional aspects, it underlines the relevance of these traditional practices in promoting food diversity, environmental sustainability, and the recognition of Indonesia’s rich culinary landscape.

Abstract

This study evaluates the capacity of drainage channels in accommodating stormwater runoff and domestic wastewater along Saribu Dolok Road, Simalungun Regency, Indonesia. Rapid population growth and escalating domestic activities in the area have led to increased volumes of wastewater and surface runoff, potentially exceeding the capacity of the existing drainage system. The objective of this research is to assess the adequacy of the current drainage infrastructure in handling projected hydrological loads. The methodology encompasses population projection analysis to estimate future domestic wastewater discharge, rainfall projection analysis to determine design rainfall intensities, and runoff discharge calculations employing standard hydrological methods. Furthermore, evapotranspiration analysis is conducted to refine water balance estimations, followed by hydraulic capacity assessment of the drainage channels and a comprehensive evaluation of the overall drainage system performance. The results reveal discrepancies between the existing channel capacities and the projected combined discharges from runoff and domestic wastewater, identifying segments that may underperform under peak conditions. These findings offer a technical foundation for pinpointing critical points in the drainage network and elucidating the interplay between hydrological inputs and channel performance under future scenarios. Abstract

This community service program aims to improve the Building Information Modeling (BIM) competencies of vocational teachers and students at SMKN 1 Lubuk Pakam and to support the integration of BIM into vocational building design education. The program was implemented through demonstrations, hands-on training, and curriculum integration assistance. A total of 16 participants, consisting of teachers and students from the Building Modeling and Information Design program, took part in the activities. Data were collected using a BIM knowledge test, a perception questionnaire, a teacher readiness questionnaire, and a practical assessment rubric for BIM modeling skills. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data, while changes in participants' BIM knowledge were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results showed that the mean BIM knowledge score increased from 17.62 on the pre-test to 19.88 on the post-test. This improvement was statistically significant (p = 0.039), with a moderate effect size (0.65). Participants' perceptions of BIM also improved, with the mean score increasing from 3.44 to 4.09 and the proportion of responses in the high category rising from 51.3% to 90.0%. Teachers' readiness to integrate BIM into classroom instruction increased substantially, with the mean score rising from 2.00 to 4.36 and the proportion of high-category responses increasing from 13.9% to 94.0%. In addition, participants successfully applied fundamental BIM workflows and produced simple digital building models. These findings indicate that the program effectively enhanced participants' BIM knowledge, practical competencies, and teachers' readiness to integrate BIM into vocational learning. Nevertheless, sustained mentoring and advanced training are recommended to support the development of more complex BIM competencies and long-term curriculum implementation.

Abstract

This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the drainage system in the urban area of Petisah Hulu Village in reducing the risk of flooding caused by high rainfall and rapid land use changes. Hydrological analysis was conducted using the Log Pearson Type III distribution to calculate the design rainfall, while the existing channel capacity was analyzed using the rational method. Based on the technical evaluation in the Final Report of the Medan Urban Drainage Plan (MUDP) Open Channel Inventory, the results of the study indicate a very high level of flood vulnerability. It was found that 58.4% of the total channel length did not meet the safety threshold criteria (freeboard < 30 cm) for the design flood discharge. The accumulation of surface runoff and domestic waste caused excess capacity of 41.6% at critical points, especially on Jalan Gajah Mada and Jalan S. Parman which flow into the Babura River. This decline in performance was significantly influenced by inadequate measurements.

Abstract

Flooding occurs every rainy season on Air Bersih Street, which crosses Medan Kota and Medan Denai Districts. Rainwater tends to pond on the road surface rather than flow into drainage channels, indicating an imbalance between runoff discharge and channel capacity. This study aims to evaluate the capacity of existing drainage channels and identify the factors affecting their performance. Field surveys were conducted on 12 segments along ±3 km to measure channel width, depth, length, and sediment thickness. Maximum rainfall data for 2014–2023 from BMKG were analyzed using the Gumbel distribution and Mononobe method. Domestic wastewater discharge was calculated based on population data. The results show severe sedimentation with a total sediment volume of 780.3 m³. The planned runoff discharge reaches 2.51 m³/s, while domestic wastewater contributes only 0.086 m³/s (3.3% of total discharge). Comparison between total discharge and channel capacity indicates that only segment 10 has sufficient capacity (2.79 m³/s > 2.60 m³/s), while the other segments are inadequate. The main causes are lack of routine dredging, improper waste disposal, and insufficient channel dimensions. Therefore, immediate channel normalization, periodic sediment dredging, and public awareness on waste management are strongly recommended.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the performance of the drainage system in the Jalan Suluh – Jalan Pembangunan III corridor in Medan City based on surface runoff discharge. The main problem that occurs is waterlogging during high-intensity rainfall due to inadequate channel capacity. The methods used include rainfall analysis using the Log Pearson Type III distribution, rainfall intensity calculations using the Mononobe method, runoff discharge calculations using the rational method, and channel capacity analysis using the Manning equation. The data used were rainfall data for the 2016–2023 period and direct field measurements. The results showed that the maximum runoff discharge of 1.63 m³/second was greater than the capacity of most drainage channels. Of the eight segments analyzed, only one segment met capacity, while the other seven segments were unable to accommodate the flow discharge. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the drainage system at the study site is not functioning optimally and requires improvements in the form of channel normalization and redesign of channel dimensions.

Abstract

Urban drainage systems are crucial for managing surface runoff and preventing flooding in densely populated areas like Medan. However, rapid urbanization, population growth, and sedimentary layers often reduce the hydraulic capacity of these channels, which can lead to local flooding. The purpose of this study was to examine the geometric characteristics and sedimentation conditions of the drainage channels on Jalan Alumunium Raya Medan. This study used a descriptive-evaluative method that combined field surveys for primary data on nine observation segments with secondary data analysis in the form of rainfall and population statistics. The study found significant sedimentation with a height of up to 0.8 m, reducing the effective capacity of the channel.Geometric measurements indicate that the channel is between 1.0 and 1.55 meters wide and 0.45 and 1.4 meters deep. Analysis indicates that the projected population of 37,050 by 2025 and high annual rainfall (2,100–2,600 mm) both increase the amount of runoff the system must handle. The total sediment volume is 1,359.23 m³, and the flow rate is 1.94 m³/s. In conclusion, the current drainage system is not functioning properly and can cause flooding. To restore the effective capacity of the channel and ensure long-term urban water management, regular maintenance, sediment dredging, and normalization of the channel dimensions are essential.
