Abstract

Urban drainage systems play an important role in managing stormwater runoff in urban areas. Rapid urban development often reduces infiltration areas and increases surface runoff, which can lead to flooding and waterlogging in several locations. This study aims to analyze the performance of urban drainage systems and identify factors causing water inundation in urban areas. The research method used is a descriptive quantitative approach by evaluating drainage channels based on rainfall data, channel capacity, sedimentation conditions, and supporting environmental factors. Secondary data were collected from previous studies and hydrological analysis results. The analysis includes rainfall intensity calculation, runoff discharge estimation, and comparison with existing drainage channel capacity. The results show that several drainage channels are unable to accommodate the design discharge due to sedimentation, waste accumulation, and changes in land use. In addition, insufficient maintenance of drainage channels also contributes to the reduced performance of the drainage system. Therefore, improvements in drainage channel capacity, routine maintenance, and integrated urban drainage planning are needed to reduce flood risks in urban areas. The results of this study are expected to provide useful information for local governments in improving urban drainage management systems.

Abstract

The rapid population growth, projected to reach 151,340 people by 2026, significantly increases the burden on urban infrastructure. This study aims to evaluate the adequacy of the existing drainage channel capacity in coping with a 50-year return period rainfall of 3,861 mm. The methodology employed is field research using a quantitative approach through direct observation and measurement at the study site. Hydrological analysis was conducted by accounting for an evapotranspiration factor of 60% to obtain accurate runoff values. The results indicate that water flow efficiency is severely hindered by sediment accumulation, with the highest sediment volume reaching 728.26 m³ and a thickness of 0.41 m. Technically, the current channel dimensions are only safe for a return period of ≤10 years. Therefore, strategic measures are required, including channel redesign and periodic sediment dredging management, to ensure long-term safety and minimize flood risks for the community.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the sedimentation condition in drainage channels located in Medan Johor District, Medan City, and to analyze its impact on channel flow capacity. The background of this research is the decreasing performance of drainage systems due to the accumulation of sediments originating from surface runoff, community activities, and solid materials transported by rainwater. The method employed in this study is a field survey involving direct measurements of channel dimensions, including length, width, depth, and sediment thickness at several observation points. The collected data were processed to estimate sediment volume using a geometric calculation approach. The analysis results indicate that the total sediment volume across seven observation segments reaches 2,180.75 m³, reflecting a relatively high level of sedimentation. This condition leads to a reduction in channel capacity, resulting in suboptimal water flow. Furthermore, population growth contributes to increased domestic wastewater entering the drainage system. If not properly managed, this situation may increase the risk of waterlogging and flooding. Therefore, sustainable drainage management and regular maintenance are essential to improve system performance.

Abstract

Urban drainage systems frequently experience performance degradation due to sedimentation and increased domestic wastewater, leading to inundation in residential areas. This study aims to evaluate the causes of inundation and sedimentation in the drainage system on Jalan Makmur Hutan, Medan Tembung District, Medan City. Primary data were obtained from seven observation segments through direct field measurements, including channel dimensions and sediment thickness, while secondary data consisted of 11-year rainfall records (2013–2023) from the Deli Serdang Climatology Station and population data for the same period. Hydrological analysis was conducted using the Log Pearson Type III distribution method to estimate design flood discharges for various return periods, and population projections for 2, 5, 10, 25, and 100 years were calculated using arithmetic, geometric, exponential, linear regression, and least square methods to estimate domestic wastewater discharge. The results showed that the average sediment thickness reached 0.27 m, reducing channel capacity by 29.7%, while the 5-year return period flood discharge was 6.34 m³/s. These findings indicate that sedimentation is the primary factor contributing to reduced drainage performance and frequent inundation in the study area. Therefore, regular channel normalization, routine maintenance, and integrated domestic wastewater management are essential to improve drainage performance and prevent future flooding.

Abstract

Urban drainage systems play an important role in controlling stormwater runoff to prevent flooding and surface water ponding. This study aims to evaluate the condition of the drainage system on Jalan Bambu based on rainfall influence and the physical condition of the channels. The method used was direct field observation on six channel segments (Segments I–VI), including measurements of geometric parameters such as width, depth, and sediment height, as well as identification of existing channel conditions. The results show that most drainage channels experience a decline in function due to sediment deposits, organic and inorganic waste, and the growth of wild vegetation. The channel width ranges from 85–130 cm with depths of 52–224 cm, while sediment height reaches 5–14 cm. These conditions reduce flow capacity and increase the risk of flooding during high rainfall events. Some segments remain in relatively good condition, although waste accumulation still indicates insufficient maintenance. In conclusion, the drainage system on Jalan Bambu is not yet functioning optimally due to sediment and waste accumulation that obstructs flow. Therefore, channel normalization, routine maintenance, and increased public awareness of environmental cleanliness are required to improve drainage performance.

Abstract

Urban sanitation remains a critical public health issue, with community participation recognized as a key factor in the success of sanitation programs. This study aims to explore the multi-dimensional factors influencing community participation in the urban setting of Koja. Through a mixed-methods approach, including surveys, interviews, and observational studies, we investigated how socio-demographic factors such as age, gender, income, and occupation, as well as aspects of sanitation governance, infrastructure, and educational interventions, interplay to affect community engagement. The study revealed that while infrastructure and access are crucial, socio-economic and gender-related barriers significantly impact participation levels. Educational level emerged as a strong predictor of engagement, indicating that awareness and knowledge play a critical role in motivating community involvement. Furthermore, sanitation governance and the quality of policies and monitoring were found to be instrumental in shaping public attitudes towards participation. The research highlights the necessity for integrated and inclusive sanitation policies that address the local context and socio-economic diversity of urban populations. The findings underscore the importance of targeted educational campaigns and the fostering of collaborative community relationships to enhance participation in sanitation programs. This study contributes to the discourse on urban sanitation by providing a nuanced understanding of the complex factors at play in community-based sanitation efforts, offering insights for policymakers to improve public health outcomes.

Abstract

Community empowerment through creative education can strengthen teachers' capacity to independently develop contextual and accessible learning media, particularly for early childhood settings where engaging, hands-on resources are essential. This community service program aimed to develop and implement interactive pop-up books as creative learning tools while strengthening teachers' capacity to design, produce, and utilize visual learning media for early childhood education. The program was conducted at RA Nadhira Asy Syafa, Deli Serdang Regency, Indonesia, employing participatory, educational, and practical approaches. Teachers were actively involved throughout the process, including problem identification, theme selection, media design, production, classroom implementation, and evaluation, ensuring that the resulting media reflected both pedagogical needs and local context. Data were collected through observation, interviews, discussions, documentation, and a simple response questionnaire structured around four indicators: student engagement, early reading responses, creativity, and perceived support of pop-up books for learning. The findings revealed generally positive responses to the developed media. Specifically, 66.7% of respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the media supported student engagement and early reading responses, while 91.7% reported positive perceptions of children's creativity, and 91.7% agreed or strongly agreed that the pop-up books effectively supported learning activities. Nevertheless, variations in children's responses suggest that continued teacher guidance and adaptation to individual developmental needs remain necessary for optimal outcomes. Overall, the program demonstrates that collaboratively developed pop-up books can serve as accessible, low-cost, and context-sensitive learning media, while simultaneously strengthening teachers' practical capacity to independently design and produce creative educational materials suited to their classroom needs.

Abstract

This study explores the influence of various sanitation practices on the Human Development Index (HDI) in the Malang District from 2011 to 2020. Employing a multiple linear regression analysis, the research examines the relationship between the HDI and five critical sanitation practices: access to wastewater treatment plants, open defecation prevalence, septic tank usage, and direct waste disposal into water bodies and onto land. Secondary data was sourced from the Badan Pusat Statistika of Malang District, ensuring robust and authoritative information spanning over a decade. Preliminary diagnostics were performed to affirm the data's suitability for regression analysis. The results indicated a significant negative impact of direct disposal into water bodies on HDI, emphasizing the critical role of effective waste management practices in promoting human development. The study underscores the need for integrated policy approaches that address sanitation infrastructure improvements, environmental protection, and education on public health practices. This paper contributes to the literature by quantifying the effects of sanitation on human development over an extended period. It offers evidence-based recommendations for policymakers to support sustainable development goals in the region.
