Abstract

This study explores the use of magical symbols within the Tariqa community in West Java, which faces accusations of deviation and conflict with the Takfiri group. Understanding this issue is crucial for mediating conflicts and promoting religious moderation in Indonesia. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach, focusing on the Idrisiyyah-Tasikmalaya, Tijaniah-Garut, and Shadziliyyah tariqas. Data is analyzed using a semiotic model, examining magical symbols, their meanings, and practitioners' spiritual experiences. Data collection involves purposive sampling through interviews and field observations. Overall, the use of magical symbols is deemed legitimate within Islamic law and does not signify deviation or impurity.

Abstract

This article aims to identify the communication strategy of the Prophet Muhammad as described in the Qur'an. This study used qualitative methods through library research. Thematic interpretation was used as the analytical technique. The results indicate that the Prophet's communication principles are as follows: First, using striking words (qawlan balīghā). Second, we selected easily digestible words (qawlan maysūrā). Third, noble words (qawlan karīmā) were used. Fourth are constructive words (qawulan ma'rūfā). Fifth, using gentle words (qawulan layyinā). The Prophet's communication strategy prioritizes deliberation in solving problems. The conclusion from the research proves that the principles and communication strategies of the Prophet Muhammad in conveying God's message, as outlined in the Qur'an, are essential elements for the success of his mission. This study recommends further research on other critical elements supporting the success of prophetic preaching based on Quranic verses

Abstract

This study examines the institutionalization and commodification of the Qur’anic mushaf within the business practices of Syaamil Quran in Indonesia, and explores how the sacredness of the text is continuously negotiated within contemporary market dynamics. Theoretical perspectives include Marx’s theory of commodification, Mosco’s content commodification, Baudrillard’s sign-value, Bourdieu’s symbolic capital, and Gauthier’s concept of spiritual capitalism. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis. The study focuses on product innovation, aesthetic design, personalization, pedagogical features, and the construction of religious legitimacy within Syaamil’s publishing model. Findings reveal that the mushaf has evolved into a hybrid entity—simultaneously sacred and commodified—functioning not only as a religious text, but also as a cultural artifact, identity marker, and symbolic commodity. The principal challenge identified is the risk of commodity fetishism, in which aesthetic form and prestige may overshadow deeper spiritual engagement. This study recommends reinforcing ethical governance in religious publishing and sustaining collaboration with Islamic scholars to preserve the Qur’an’s transformative function in society. This study contributes to the field of religion and political economy by positioning the Qur’anic mushaf as an emergent site of negotiation between sacred meaning and capitalist rationality, offering a critical model for understanding religious publishing in modern Muslim societies.

Abstract

This article attempts to examine the epistemological dimension of a local interpretation by a Nusantara scholar, namely Tafsir Tajul Muslimin Min al-Kalam al-Rabb al-'Alamiin by Misbah Mustafa. Misbah Mustafa's interpretation in his work is strongly influenced by the scientific background and socio-political dynamics of Javanese Islamic society at that time. This study employs a historical-philosophical approach, utilising a qualitative research method that involves descriptive analysis. The data used are derived from literature studies, particularly those related to the interpretation of Tajul Muslimin and other relevant literature that support this research. The results of this study are that Misbah Mustafa's interpretation in his work is influenced by at least two factors: internal factors, such as the scientific background of traditional Islamic boarding schools that tend towards socio-community studies, and external factors, namely the cultural and political situation at the time of writing. Regarding the epistemological structure of Tajul Muslimin's interpretation, in terms of the sources of interpretation used, it is classified as tafsir bi al-ra'yi al-Mahmud or also called burhani epistemology. Meanwhile, the interpretive method used by Misbah is generally classified as at-tahlili (analysis), and specifically, the author identified at least 10 distinct steps employed by Misbah in his interpretation. Then, regarding the validity of Misbah Mustafa's interpretation in his interpretation, the author concluded that his interpretation contains elements of three theories of truth in philosophy: coherence, correspondence, and pragmatism.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze Abu al-Su'ud Al-'Imadi's exegetical manual, Irsyad al-'Aql al-Salim ila Mazaya al-Kitab al-Karim, focusing on the manual's sources of interpretation (mashdar), techniques of interpretation (manhaj), and interpretation orientation (ittijah). The mufassir's life story, his scientific discoveries, and the context of the commentary's composition are all briefly covered. This method of research is qualitative and takes a literature-based approach. From the perspective of the source, Abu al-Su'ud Al-'Imadi's commentary Irsyad al-'Aql al-Salim ila Mazaya al-Kitab al-Karim falls into the category of interpretation bi al-Ra'yi; from the perspective of the method, it employs the tahlili; and from the perspective of the orientation, it includes the lughawi. Abu al-Su'ud al-'Imadi was a scholar who lived during the Ottoman Empire's golden age, when the population enjoyed economic success, political stability, and scientific advancement. This seems to be the driving force behind Abu al-interpretation Su'ud's from a linguistic perspective. His ardor for the Arabic language and literature, which has elevated him to the level of an expert in the field, is another important factor in the linguistic focus of his interpretations (lughawi).

Abstract

Abstract

(7) Menjelaskan perbedaan qira'at dalam penafsiran Al-Qur'an. (8) Melakukan tarjih ketika menafsirkan kalimat dalam sebuah ayat.

Abstract

Public security and order are essential foundations of social and state life. In the Qur’anic perspective, security (amān) is not limited to physical protection but also includes social peace, justice, and public welfare. The Indonesian National Police (Polri) holds a strategic role in translating these values into concrete practices of law enforcement and national security. This study examines the Qur’anic concept of public security and order and analyzes its implications for Polri’s duties within the modern Indonesian state. Using a qualitative-normative approach, the research applies textual analysis of relevant Qur’anic verses and compares them with Polri’s regulations, roles, and institutional mandates, supported by academic literature on religion, law, and policing. The findings show a strong alignment between Polri’s responsibilities and Qur’anic principles, particularly in upholding justice, protecting fundamental human rights, prioritizing social harmony, and maintaining order through a humanistic approach. Integrating Qur’anic values into Polri’s operations can enhance institutional legitimacy, strengthen professionalism, and promote sustainable security in the face of contemporary challenges.

Abstract

Reexamining the representation of women in the Qur'an is essential for understanding contemporary gender discourse, particularly amid the persistence of patriarchal perceptions that continue to influence women's political participation in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the interpretation of Queen Balqis in Indonesian Qur'anic exegesis (Tafsir Nusantara) and examine its relevance to women's political participation in contemporary Indonesia. Employing a qualitative library research design, this study adopts a comparative exegesis approach integrated with feminist hermeneutics and socio-political contextualization. The primary sources consist of Tafsir An-Nūr by Hasbi Ash-Shiddieqy, Tafsir Al-Azhar by Hamka, and Tafsir Al-Miṣbāḥ by Quraish Shihab, supported by relevant academic literature. The findings reveal that all three exegetes recognize Queen Balqis as a legitimate political leader whose leadership is characterized by rationality, consultation (shūrā), diplomacy, and public welfare. Their differences primarily lie in methodological orientation: Hasbi emphasizes normative-juridical principles, Hamka highlights moral and ethical dimensions, while Quraish Shihab adopts a contextual and maqāṣid al-sharī'ah approach. Collectively, these interpretations demonstrate that the Qur'an does not reject women's political leadership on the basis of gender but evaluates leadership according to competence, justice, and public benefit. Consequently, Tafsir Nusantara offers an inclusive and contextually relevant Qur'anic framework for strengthening women's political participation in contemporary Indonesia.
