Abstract

Discourse is unquestionably constructed with what is presumed as lexical bundle, and in each genre, it idiosyncratically occurs. Thus, the identification of idiosyncrasy of a particular genre would be beneficial for some parties in forming a decent and appropriate discourse. This study aims to explain the construction and function of lexical bundles including bundles which do not fit to theories used in this study. This is corpus-based research. Four-word bundles extracted from 50 chosen articles in EEJ using Antcont 3.5.8 were analyzed accordance with the structure of lexical bundle theory by Biber et. al (1999) and the function of lexical bundle theory by Conrad & Biber (2005). The result showed that (1) the constructions realized in the genre are noun phrase with of-phrase fragment, anticipatory it + verb phrase/adjective phrase, (Verb phrase +) that-clause fragment, copula be + noun phrase/adjective phrase, other prepositional phrase, and prepositional phrase with embedded of-phrase fragment. (2) The functions realized are stance expression, referential expression, and discourse organizer. (3) The excluded structures realized are noun phrase with gerund as modifier and noun phrase with and conjunction in between. (4) The excluded function is to express an entity. This research provides educational department academics variety of expressions for their academic discourse organizations and other researchers new findings concerning other lexical bundles’s structures and functions apart from the theorists.

Abstract

In learning a language, students are supposed to study linguistics in order to be able to recognize the root of words, how they are formed, and the context of language. This study aimed to explain the realization of the derivational process, the inflectional process, and the causes of the error in the students’ writing. This study used a descriptive qualitative design. The researchers analyzed the students’ writing essays written by the XII-graders of the Vocational High School Al-Musyaffa Kendal in the academic year 2021/2022. The instruments are document analysis theory and interview. It used the theory of Dulay et.al. (1982). The findings demonstrate that the students made errors that belong to both the derivational and the inflectional processes. Most of the students made errors in the omission of derivation, yet they made fewer errors in the addition and malformation of derivation. Besides, there were many problems in dealing with the inflection. Most of the students were confused about how to deal with the omission of noun inflection and the omission of verb inflection. Nevertheless, they made fewer errors in the misordering of verb inflection. In addition, the cause of the error that the students did was mostly carelessness as it occurs due to students’ lack of motivation and less enthusiasm in engaging in the teaching and learning process. Expectantly, this research will provide an essential contribution as a reference in comprehending word formation and contribute to teaching and learning of forming English words.

Abstract

Conversation Analysis is an issue of Pragmatics. It is a way to analyze a conversation by its elements, such as turn-taking and adjacency pair produced by the speakers. In this present study, we conducted research in the field of conversation analysis. More specifically, we investigated the adjacency pair patterns, the meaning of the patterns, and the implicature of the patterns in the spoken interaction of the Ancora Meet discussion with Nadiem Anwar Makarim, Minister of Education and Culture of Indonesia, the Republic of Indonesia. This research investigates how adjacency pairs patterned in Ancora Meet’s interview with Nadiem Anwar Makarim, how meaning is made through the patterns, and how the implicature resulted from using the patterns. This present study used a qualitative method. We found eight patterns of adjacency pair construct in Ancora Meet, and then three maxims were realized in the discussion. This study also reveals some patterns. Individuals prefer to communicate information implicitly rather than explicitly. Particularised dialogue implicature dominance in the discussion is evidence that speakers are connected to the context to implicate utterances in their current conversation. The particularised conversation implicature’s violation of the maxim is evidence of a significant relationship between context and cooperative principles. Conversation implicatures are almost always connected to the context. Finally, we discovered 42 instances of Minister Nadiem’s implicature, demonstrating that, for the most part, conversational implicature is always connected to context. Meanwhile, in practical contribution, this research can be used as a reference in teaching English, especially speaking.

Abstract

Mixing two or more languages in the same conversation is a common phenomenon in this modern era. Furthermore, many people, particularly entertainers and also people in government such as Nadiem Anwar Makarim, the Ministry of Education and Culture, also used code-mixing. The present study is aimed at investigating the code-mixing used by Nadiem Anwar Makarim. This qualitative research is conducted by observing and analyzing the utterances from downloaded video podcasts as the data, which was then transcribed. The data analysis also included the types and factors of code-mixing. There were 173 numbers of data from the types of code-mixing, and those data were divided into three types. Those are 90 numbers of intra-sentential data, 81 numbers of intra-lexical data, and 2 numbers of pronunciation changes. The finding shows that intra-sentential code-mixing is the most frequent type used by Nadiem Makarim. Furthermore, the researchers also found the factors of code-mixing, which are internal factors and external factors. This study is significant for several reasons. First, the findings of this research are expected to be a meaningful description of the existence of code-mixing. It can be used to support daily conversation, especially in the teaching and learning processes. This study is also expected to be meaningful information for further research in the future for a better understanding of the use of code-mixing.

Abstract

English is the primary language of communication in the aviation industry. Aviation English is a subset of English for Special Purposes (ESP) that applies to all air traffic controllers and anyone interested in aeronautics or aviation. However, it is more difficult because most pilots and crew members do not speak English as their first language. The researcher discovered that English is still a barrier for students to reach the criteria necessary for graduates of the Faculty of Aerospace Technology based on preliminary investigations conducted at the Institut Teknologi Dirgantara Adisutjipto (ITDA) Yogyakarta. To evaluate the extent to which teachers implement digital and pedagogical techniques with their students, the researcher utilized a methodology named TPACK The design of this research was a form of qualitative research: a case study. The instruments were questionnaires, observation checklists, and interview questions. Based on the finding, the writer concludes that the ITDA Yogyakarta lecturers can implement the technology in digital pedagogy to teach the English language for Aviation.

Abstract

This study was aimed to discover the types of processes used Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA) to study the relationship between Visual, Lingual, and Written text, and how they influence the authors to analyze of Artificial Intelligence Video’ Alexandr Wang speech in TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design) talks YouTube channel. Artificial intelligence is a set of sciences, theories, and techniques whose purpose is to reproduce by a machine the cognitive abilities of a human being. Machine-based systems can give a set of human-defined objectives and make predictions, recommendations, or decisions that influence real or virtual environments. AI systems interact with us and act on our environment directly or indirectly. Often, they appear to operate autonomously and can adapt their behavior by learning about the context, (UNICEF 2021: 16). AI systems are algorithmic models that carry out cognitive or perceptual functions in the world that were previously reserved for thinking, judging, and reasoning human beings. (Leslie et al. 2021: 8). MDA is a term that is used to refer to the way people communicate using different modes at the same time (Kress & van Leeuwen, 1996), which is defined as the use of several semiotic methods in product design, or semiotic events simultaneously, and in a certain way these modes combined with strengthening, compliment, or be in a certain arrangement (Kress and van Leeuwen, 2001).

Abstract

The problems of this research are what is the average time spent for the S2 English Education Program students for finishing their thesis, what academic and non academic handicaps faced by the students to finish the thesis, what academic and non academic handicaps faced by the lecturers to supervise the students in finishing their thesis, How is to solve the problems in finishing the thesis. The design of the research is descriptive qualitative with the population English Education Program (EEP) students after finishing their thesis examinations and the lecturers as the advisors. The samples taken are thirty students and eight lecturers chosen randomly. The data were collected through two questionnaires namely for students dealing with the students’ identity, questions dealing with academic factors, questions dealing with non academic factors, questions addressed to the lecturers. The conclusions taken are as follows: the students’ academic competence reflected in thirty students is good; the scores for the subjects directly related to the thesis are good, though some are repeated with the commulative achievement index of 3,55. The scores for the thesis examinations are starting from AB to A or 80 above. However, there are still some problems in writing the thesis especially in grammar, diction, spelling, punctuation, cohesion, coherence, content, reference, format, numbering. The errors occurred in all chapters including in writing the abstract, acknowledgement, table of content, cover, and bibliography. Most students have the guidance book to write the thesis; the process to get the advisor decree takes one week; the meeting with the advisors is scheduled; the oral communication mode can be direct meeting through telephone and through sms. it always gets the response for an appointment from the advisors for consultation. The time period from one meeting to the other with the supervisor is one week. The advisor is helpful and in average they master the material proposed by the students. Mostly there is no contradictory opinion between the first and the second advisors. The references available in the English department library are helpful for the students to write the thesis but not in the central library of Unnes; The examiners of thesis don’t demand much revision; the data collection and the document preparation needed is well done; at the beginning the students do not master the material but after reading a lot and being guided by the advisors they know better.3) most of the students have great motivation in finishing the thesis for financial reason; most of the students are tough and patient in writing the thesis for the fact that they can finish the revision quickly; some students have very limited skill of research that makes them to be guided much; most of the students have politeness in asking the consultation though some do not. There are still some students who are reluctant to read the original books; they prefer to quote others’ quotations and still make mistake in the format including in the numbering system.

Abstract

The selection of appropriate approach(es) to teaching literature in EFL classrooms becomes a necessity that they can result in good performance of the students, both in their critical thinking aspect and their language proficiency. The problem appears when the lecturer does not implement a suitable approach to literary analysis when teaching literature to the EFL students. These problems led to the student’s inability to perform as expected. The present study examines how lecturers perceive the implementation of approaches to teaching literature in EFL classrooms and their relations to improving the students’ reflective writing skills as the manifestation of the student’ responses to the literary works. Among the approaches studied were the Language-based approach, the Reader-Response approach, and the Philosophical approach. The study was carried out on six lecturers teaching the Literary Criticism course in the EFL classrooms at the university level. A questionnaire was distributed to the lecturers teaching this course at a university in Semarang, Indonesia, containing eight-question items regarding how they perceive the literary approaches and how effective they used them in improving the students’ reflective writing skills, in encouraging the students to think critically about the events in literary works and in relating the readings to some aspects of their own lives. The study revealed that each literary analysis approach in teaching literature has its benefits and characteristics. The study results also showed that each approach has its strengths and weaknesses that differ from one another.
