Abstract

The objective of this research is to describe the percentage of post-alveolar fricative sound pronunciation acceptability among the English Language Education students in their sixth semester at the University of Tanjungpura. The scope of the study would be limited to the comparison of the first and second formants of the participants with those of the native speaker, whose formants were evaluated utilizing the PRAAT software. The data was gathered from a pronunciation performance test that was conducted via an audio recording procedure. The study involved a total of 15 participants who were categorized into three distinct ethnic groups, including Indonesian Tionghoa, Dayak, and Malay. Each participant pronouncing a set of 20 words, consisting of both voiceless and voiced post-alveolar fricatives. According to the findings of the study, 1) the percentage of voiceless post-alveolar fricative sounds that were considered ‘Acceptable’ was 40.5%, whereas the percentage of those that were considered ‘Not Acceptable’ was 59.5%., 2) the percentage of ‘Acceptable’ pronunciation of voiced post-alveolar fricative sounds was 42%, while the percentage of those that were ‘Not Acceptable’ was 58%. The inference that can be drawn is that students encounter challenges when attempting to articulate post-alveolar fricative sounds. HIGHLIGHTS : The study revealed that 31% of students exhibited exceptional proficiency in voiceless post-alveolar fricative pronunciation, whereas 33% achieved excellence in voiced pronunciation. This indicates a diverse distribution of skill levels among students. The acceptable criteria for pronunciation show that pronunciations that fall within the excellent to fair categories are in agreement with the expectations of native speakers. The correct pronunciation was achieved in around 40.5% of cases for voiceless fricatives and 42% for voiced fricatives, indicating places where pronunciation was considered acceptable. A significant number of sixth-semester English Language Education students had obstacles in pronouncing post-alveolar fricatives. The study proposes the implementation of an appropriate educational setting, the development of phonetic learning awareness, and the investigation of curricular enhancements for addressing pronunciation difficulties.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The village of Punggur is one of the villages with a relatively low level of education, where only 5% of its population pursue higher education and only 0.15% of them manage to complete high school. In an effort to address the low education level in Punggur Village, a small Village is home to a Community Learning Center (PKBM) named "Komunitas Rumah Pintar Punggur Cerdas". This community was initiated by a young woman from the village who successfully completed her education at a college. With the existence of this learning community, residents of Punggur Village, ranging from children to adults, are allowed to participate in learning and teaching activities there. Recognizing this phenomenon, it is important for researchers to empower human resources at this PKBM in order to facilitate diverse students from different ethnicities, ages, and economic backgrounds. The empowerment activities conducted by the researchers include training in independent curriculum development for volunteer educators, upcycling used items into valuable products, and processing natural resources into appealing traditional foods. These activities are designed with a sustainability perspective aimed at creating a productive younger generation capable of developing the village by utilizing the richness of the surrounding natural resources. Keywords: Kurikulum Merdeka, Community Learning Center, Cooking Explorer, Recycling, SustainabilityABSTRAK Desa Punggur merupakan salah satu desa yang memiliki tingkat pendidikan cukup rendah dimana hanya 5% dari penduduknya menempuh perguruan tinggi dan hanya 0,15% dari mereka mampu menyelesaikan SMA. Abstract

This systematic literature review was completed to investigate the status quo of evaluation instruments utilized in the development of local-culture based ELT materials in Indonesia. The main concern in this review is the validity of the evaluation instrument. This research used the PRISMA 2020 model to review the existing studies in the intended area. The data were collected from the Garuda database an official database to index articles published in Indonesia. There are 2.394 studies obtained and only 76 of them fulfil all criteria for analysis. Out of 76 studies reviewed, the results show that there are no studies that have validated their evaluation instruments. In addition, 56 studies prefer to use self-made evaluation instruments in the materials development process. Only 10 studies chose to adapt the available evaluation instrument from other sources in their development process. This review found that there is a gap that lies between the available local culture-based ELT materials evaluation instruments and the need of validity to be applied to materials development. It suggested the need of more studies in instrument development and validation to support Indonesian local-culture based ELT materials development. In the long run, the local culture will be globally well-known and accepted if the materials are available and accessible world-wide.

Abstract

This research investigates the challenges faced by English teachers in motivating junior high students to read within the context of implementing an emancipatory curriculum in Indonesia. Utilizing a semi-structured in-depth interview method, the study, conducted in four government schools in Pontianak in 2023, engaged four English teachers as respondents and one as an interviewer. Respondents were chosen based on their active involvement in daily professional activities. Following a predetermined interview protocol, the interviewer conducted one-on-one sessions, exploring teachers’ experiences, opinions, and emotions regarding efforts to promote English reading in their schools. The collected data underwent coding and interpretation, revealing teachers as crucial facilitators creatively addressing challenges, particularly in student motivation. Their adaptability and innovative programs foster diverse reading engagement strategies. Schools implement enhancements such as differentiated learning and literacy programs, extending to character development and teacher professionalism. Those efforts were the teachers’ creativity to elevate English teaching and learning in those four schools, particularly to promote reading activities during the early implementation of emancipatory curriculum. The findings emphasize the necessity for ongoing professional development, collaboration to address resource challenges, and the promotion of effective communication and collaboration among educators to enhance student engagement through innovative teaching.

Abstract

This study investigates young learners’ needs in developing task-based English teaching materials that embed character education values. Although task-based language teaching (TBLT) has gained broad recognition, limited research in the Indonesian context has examined how character education values can be systematically integrated into TBLT materials for primary school students. To address this gap, a mixed-methods design was employed, combining quantitative data from student questionnaires with qualitative insights from teacher and principal interviews. This methodological triangulation ensured a more valid and comprehensive understanding of learners’ personal and instructional needs. Participants included 424 elementary students, three English teachers, and three principals from Muhammadiyah schools in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The findings indicate that students’ personal needs are influenced by age, gender, cultural background, and attitudes toward English learning, while their learning needs reflect preferences in learning styles, teaching media, instructional techniques, thematic choices, language proficiency, and the inclusion of character-related content. The study provides empirically grounded insights to guide English curriculum design in Muhammadiyah schools, fostering the integration of moral and linguistic goals within task-based instruction, and offering a transferable framework for English language education in Indonesia and comparable contexts.
