Abstract

Background: Smokers frequently experience insomnia, a sleep disturbance linked to nicotine’s stimulating properties that negatively impact sleep quality. Non-pharmacological approaches, such as structured physical exercise, have gained attention as alternative interventions for insomnia management. Purpose: The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of structured physical exercise in reducing insomnia severity among young adult smokers. Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest model and control group. A total of 40 young adult smokers were recruited as participants and proportionally assigned to either the intervention or control group, with 20 individuals in each. The intervention group underwent a structured physical exercise program for four weeks, performed three times per week for 30 minutes per session, while the control group received health education materials. Insomnia severity was measured using ISI (the Insomnia Severity Index). Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for within-group comparisons and the Mann–Whitney U test for between-group differences. Result: The findings revealed a significant reduction in ISI scores within the intervention group, with an average difference of 4.40 (p<0.001), whereas the control group showed a smaller, non-significant reduction of 0.80 (p=0.086). Structured physical exercise proved to be statistically more effective in decreasing insomnia severity compared to health education (p=0.001). Implication: Community nurses can adopt promotive strategies by implementing structured physical exercise interventions to effectively reduce insomnia severity among young adult smokers. This non-pharmacological approach can be systematically integrated into public health programs to support improved sleep quality and overall health outcomes. Abstract

Chronic pain in older adults causes them to experience disability which causes dependence in fulfilling daily needs (ADL). The family as a caregiver for the elderly is the main support system in the care process at home. An increase in knowledge and skills is needed by caregivers to improve their coping and reduce the burden of care. Community service activities are carried out by providing material such as the concept of chronic pain, training in care skills and accompanying home visits. Participants were families who cared for chronically ill elderly with 36 respondents. Assessment was carried out using pre-test and post-test knowledge and family readiness in caring for the elderly. The results of the assessment of family readiness to care for the elderly found that families who cared for the elderly with chronic pain had readiness in caring for the elderly (mean value = 3.91 ± 0.28), but there was data that families were not prepared to face emergency situations (mean value = 1 .63 ± 0.83). The results of caregiver training activities showed an increase in knowledge with a mean post test = 8.48 ± 1.21, an increase from the mean pre-test = 5.21 ± 1.73 and a difference in value of 3.27. The next suggestion is that there will be training that contains material on elderly care and stress management in the family so that it is able to improve the quality of care provided to the elderly.

Abstract

Abstract: The increasing number of elderly individuals can lead to various health issues that require special attention from the community. One possible approach to address this is through community empowerment, particularly of rural women, in elderly giver. This initiative aims to establish “Bunda Lansia” (Elderly Care Mothers) and to enhance the knowledge and skills of rural women in elderly care. The methods include the formation of Bunda Lansia, education sessions, and elderly care training, in collaboration with the Department of Health, Population Control, and Family Planning of Lumajang Regency. This activity involved 75 women from Kraton Village, Yosowilangun Lor Village, and Yosowilangun Kidul Village. The evaluation was conducted through pre-tests and post-tests, practice observations, skill rating scales, participant feedback, and follow-up assessments to evaluate the application of skills in daily life. The results indicate that 75 Bunda Lansia were inaugurated, with an increase in knowledge from an average of 77.5 to 92 (18.7%) and an improvement in elderly care skills from an average of 72.5 to 85 (17.2%). In conclusion, this initiative effectively enhances the knowledge and skills of rural women in elderly care.

Abstract

Cigarette smoking is a major contributor to health problems worldwide and is highly prevalent in Indonesia, especially among young adult males. Nicotine in cigarettes disrupts lipid metabolism, leading to increased triglyceride levels and dyslipidemia, which are closely related to the double nutrition problem, characterized by abnormalities in the lipid profile. Smoking induces these abnormalities, indicating the need for antioxidant administration. This study aims to investigate the effect of Polysaccharide Peptides from Ganoderma lucidum on lowering triglycerides lipid profile level in active smokers with dyslipidemia. This experimental study used a pretest-posttest control group design involving 28 active smokers aged 18-21 years with dyslipidemia. Subjects were assigned to either a polysaccharide peptide (PsP) therapy group, receiving PsP extracted from Ganoderma lucidum, or a control group. Fasting serum triglyceride concentrations were measured before and after treatment. Statistical analyses used paired and unpaired t-tests to assess triglyceride level changes. The results showed a significant lowering of triglyceride levels in the PsP-treated group (p= 0.006). While the difference before and after PsP administration reached marginal statistical significance (p= 0.059), clinical improvement in triglyceride profiles was observed compared to controls. In conclusion, Ganoderma lucidum-derived PsP lowers triglyceride lipid profiles in smokers with dyslipidemia. These findings support the use of PsP as a therapeutic herbal intervention to improve lipid metabolism disturbed by smoking-induced inflammation.
