Abstract

Abstract

Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is an eating problem in children, causing nutritional deficiency, obstructing growth, and development. This study investigates the correlation between demographic characteristics and parenting alliance to nutritional status in children with ARFID in Malang Regency. This analytic observational study used a cross-sectional approach from December 2018 to March 2019. There were 245 respondents with multistage sampling. Parenting alliance was quantified using questionnaires, and the children's nutritional status was quantified using anthropometry, categorized based on Z-score weight-for-age. Data analysis used Pearson correlation coefficients and Multiple linear regression with α=0.05. The result showed no correlation between parenting alliance and children's nutritional status (p>0.05). The multiple linear regression analysis demonstrated that children's nutritional status was influenced by a child's age (β = -0.156, p=0.020) and the number of children in a family (β = -0.263, p=0.029). In conclusion, parenting alliance is not directly related to children's nutritional status in children with ARFID. Nevertheless, the child's age and the number of children in a family affect their nutritional status.

Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remains a major cause of death worldwide due to complications, and its incidence is fairly high and predicted to continue to rise each year. This contributes to a low quality of life and poor self-care management, necessitating an effective treatment strategy consisting of self-help group (SHG) therapy that expands social networks, receives information, and receives emotional support from group members in order to provide numerous benefits. The purpose of this study was to assess if community-based self-help group interventions improve the quality of life and self-care management of individuals with T2DM. Methods: This study employed a Quasi-experiment non-equivalent control group pre-test and post-test design with a self-help group intervention (n=30) for one month. The sample was selected using the approach of purposive selection with the following inclusion criteria: age between 40 and 65 years, T2DM experience between 3 and 5 years, and the ability to converse, read, and write effectively. Statistical paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test were used to assess the data. Results: In both groups, self-care management, quality of life, and blood glucose levels at baseline were comparable. After one month of intervention, self-care management, quality of life, and blood glucose levels were significantly better in the intervention group than in the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: In this study, the self-care management and quality of life of individuals with T2DM improved following SHG intervention. Integrating public health effort with an interpersonal collaboration approach will provide an optimal integrated contribution to resolving chronic deseases.

Abstract

Background: Adolescents constitute a significant portion of the global population and fall within the age range of 10–19 years. During adolescence, individuals undergo various physical, social, emotional, and hormonal changes. A lack of knowledge regarding reproductive health among adolescents is partly attributed to limited access to accurate and comprehensive information. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the GenRe KIT Snakes and Ladders as an interactive educational tool to improve adolescents' knowledge about reproductive health. Methods: The research design used was a quasi-experimental design, with two groups, pre-test and posttest. The population consisted of adolescents, with a sample of 72 participants selected through simple random sampling. The inclusion criteria were adolescents 14-19 years old. A pretest was conducted before the intervention, followed by a posttest after the intervention. The instrument used was a modified Tentang Kita module by BKKBN, consisting of 21 knowledge and 13 attitude items related to reproductive health. Validity was confirmed with Pearson correlation values (r = 0.364–0.807), and reliability was high, with Cronbach’s alpha of 0.889 for knowledge and 0.745 for attitude. Results: The pre-test score in the intervention group was 13.11 (SD = 1.75) and improved significantly to 19.86 (SD = 1.33) after the intervention (p< 0.001). Post-intervention, the intervention group’s knowledge score remained substantially higher than the control group’s (p < 0.001). The between-group effect size (Cohen’s d = 3.48) indicated a very large effect, confirming the GenRe KIT Snakes and Ladders game's superior effectiveness in enhancing adolescents’ reproductive health knowledge compared to traditional lecture-based methods. Conclusion: GenRe KIT Snakes and Ladders game is effective in increasing adolescents' reproductive health knowledge and shows potential as an engaging educational tool in schools and community-based programs. Despite limitations related to study design, sample scope, and short intervention duration, the findings support further research using larger, more diverse populations and randomized designs to assess long-term impacts and behavioral outcomes.

Abstract

Triage at the hospital's Emergency Room (ER) is critical for prioritizing the care of emergency patients. Triage errors can be dangerous and endanger patient safety, so nursing students should have a solid understanding of triage. This study investigates the impact of ESI triage learning media containing PowerPoint and animated films on knowledge, triage decision-making (TDM), and participant satisfaction. The research used a quantitative approach with a Quasi-Experimental pretest-posttest method involving 36 5th semester Diploma Nursing students at the Makassar Ministry of Health Polytechnic. The study was divided into two groups, experimental (animated video learning) and control (PowerPoint learning), to evaluate the effect of treatment on knowledge, triage decision-making, and student satisfaction in ESI triage learning. The results of the data analysis show a significant increase in knowledge about ESI Triage and student satisfaction after the intervention, with significant values of 0.001 and 0.018, respectively (p-value < 0.05). Although there was no significant increase in Triage decision-making abilities between the groups that used animated videos and Microsoft PowerPoint (p = 0.440), the use of animated videos overall increased student responses and satisfaction. MANOVA analysis confirmed that the implementation of animated videos significantly influenced knowledge and satisfaction in students with a p-value <0.05. The use of animated videos increases student knowledge and satisfaction significantly compared to PowerPoint, although it does not affect triage decision-making.

Abstract

Background: Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) remains a significant health problem among adolescent girls, affecting growth, academic achievement, and reproductive health. Traditional education methods like lectures and booklets are often less engaging and ineffective in changing behavior. Few studies have tested gamified, theory-based health education for anemia prevention in Indonesian adolescents. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Game Health Education Anemia (GHEA) compared with a Digital Pocket Book in improving knowledge and attitudes toward IDA prevention among adolescent girls. Methods: A quasi-experimental study, guided by the Health Belief Model (HBM) and reported according to the TREND checklist, was conducted at SMP Islam Ma’arif 02 Malang, Indonesia, in June 2025. Sixty female adolescents were selected through purposive sampling based on power analysis (effect size = 1.12, α = 0.05, power = 0.95). Inclusion criteria were female students aged 12–18 years, healthy, and owning a digital device; exclusion criteria were prior exposure to digital anemia education or incomplete participation. Participants were equally assigned to an intervention group (GHEA) and a control group (the Digital Pocket Book). Data were collected using a validated questionnaire and analyzed with Wilcoxon signed-rank, paired t-, and Mann–Whitney U tests at a 0.05 significance level. Results: The mean age of participants was 14 years (range 13–15). The GHEA group showed significant improvements in knowledge (Z = -4.847, p < 0.001) and attitudes (Z = -4.275, p < 0.001), while the control group showed smaller yet significant gains. Between-group analysis revealed higher post-test scores in the intervention group for both knowledge (Z = -5.284, p < 0.001) and attitudes (Z = -3.081, p = 0.002). Conclusion: The GHEA intervention was more effective than the Digital Pocket Book in improving adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes toward IDA prevention, indicating that gamification-based education can serve as an engaging and effective tool for school-based health promotion
