Abstract

Cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) are known to have potential as vectors of various pathogenic bacteria in various locations including the nutrition department area in the hospitals. Research related to the role of these animals as vectors of pathogenic bacteria has not been done. The provision of food in the hospital nutrition department has the potential for bacterial contamination from food, equipment, hospital staff, and the environment. Cockroaches can be a vector for spreading various nosocomial infectious diseases in hospitals. A descriptive method was used, and the data were obtained by bacterial isolation, Gram staining method, antibiotic sensitivity test, and bacterial identification using Microbact system software 2000. This study was carried out at the Biology Education Laboratory, Education and Teacher Training Faculty,  Tadulako University. Based on the results of the study, 6 species of bacterial isolates from cockroach feet   in the nutrition department area of Palu city hospital, namely E. coli, S. arizonae, Salmonella sp., K. ozaenae, S. simulans, and S. enterica. Antibiotic sensitivity test showed that four bacteria exhibited multi-drug resistance to antibiotics Amoxycillin, Chloramphenicol and Vancomycin. Meanwhile,S. enterica was still sensitive to the five tested antibiotics namely Amoxycillin, Chloramphenicol, Ciprofloxacin, Ofloxacin, and Vancomycin. serious policies and handling are needed to control new types of vectors that carry diseases in humans.. meanwhile,S. entericawas still sensitive to the five tested antibiotics.

Abstract

Cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) a group of Arthropoda is living inside and outside the home because these animals can cause various diseases and act as vectors as well as hospes.  Cockroaches and other animals that act as vectors are strongly associated with the presence of microorganism pathogen carried on their feet. This study aims to identify the bacteria in Cockroach feet at Teluk Palu Permai residential neighborhood and the sensitivity test against antibiotics. This research is an exploratory laboratory, using a standard of bacteria isolation, Gram staining, Microbact system, and antibiotic sensitivity test. The results of the research were successful in identifying bacteria from Cockroaches, obtained from residential environments bacteria thas is Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Salmonella arizonae, and Proteus mirabilis. The discovery of this bacteria is initial research that is useful for the development of handling infectious diseases transmitted by Cockroach vectors. This study has also found that bacteria experience resistance to the antibiotics Vancomycin, Chloramphenicol and Amoxycillin. While Ciprofloxacin and Ofloxacin antibiotics are still sensitive to Escherichia coli bacteria, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Salmonella arizonae, and Proteus mirabilis. This research is expected to provide preliminary data on the role of Cockroach as a vector of infectious diseases for humans caused by pathogenic bacteria and prevention efforts in the future.

Abstract

Crude extracts of Jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lamk) flowers contain antibacterial compounds such as alkaloids, tannins, flafonid and steroids, which is alsoempirically useful as medicine for diarrhea. This research is aiming to determine the efficacy of antibacterial exposure of crude extract of A. heterophyllus Lamk flowers, and the change of outer membrane protein (OMP) expressions protein virulence factors of Salmonella typhi. The results indicate that the crude extract of A. heterophyllus Lamk. Flowers has antibacterial efficacy against S. typhi at the lowest concentration of 20%, since at this concentration crude extract of A. heterophyllus Lamk. flowers is still capable of inhibiting the growth of S. typhi. Based on the results of SDS-PAGE electrophoresis and measurement of protein molecular weight, it is found that several OMP molecular weights are 80 kDa, 66kDa, 57 kDa, 45 kDa, 36 kDa, 33 kDa, 30 kDa, 28kDa, 23 kDa, 20 kDa, 16 kDa, 14 kDa and 10kDa based on the low standard marker protein product [zigma]. It is confirmed that the exposure to crude extract of flower A. heterophyllus Lamk. results in the changes of OMP protein expression of S. typhi compared to the normal OMP expression. This finding is supported by the inhibition on the growth and activity of S.typhi in the test of antibacterial properties of extracts jackfruit A.heterophyllus Lamk. flowers.Keyword : Salmonella Typhi, omp, A.hterophyllus Lamk.

Abstract

Cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) are often found in homes, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, warehouses, offices, libraries, and others. The existence of these highly dynamic animals is suspected of causing nosocomial infections at the hospitals and acting as vectors and hosts associated with bacteria carried on its feet. This research aims to analyze the sensitivity of Gram-negative bacteria isolated from Cockroach feet in the hospital and residential areas in Palu City against some antibiotics. This research is an explorative laboratory experiment research, with the method of bacteria identification, isolation and antibiotic test using standard procedure "The Bauer-Kirby". The results of bacterial identification in three areas of the Palu Hospital are Klebsiella ozaenaeSalmoella arizonae, Salmonella sp. Escherichia coli, Salmonella cholerae-suis and Salmonella simultans, while the bacteria from the residential area, Escherichia coli, Klebsiellapneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Salmonella arizonae, and Proteus mirabilis. The results of bacterial sensitivity tests on five antibiotics showed that all of these bacteria were resistant to the antibiotics of Vancomycin, Chloramphenicol, and Amoxycillin, but were still sensitive to Ciprofloxacin and Ofloxacin.

Abstract

The development of social attitude is done as an effort in preparing students to compete for a better future. Good learning outcomes can be obtained through ideal learning. The expected demands in the 2013 curriculum related to social attitudes, it is necessary to be developed, as a means of students to compete in the future. Mastering and developing students' social attitudes is done to help students achieve good learning outcomes. It is hoped that classroom learning integrates these social attitudes. In accordance with the fact that the current biology learning is generally still focused on improving students' cognitive learning outcomes, while developing students' social attitudes has not been done completely This paper is a literature review to analyze the development of students' social attitudes in Biology learning. Based on the results of literature review, it is known that conventional learning model applied can not develop social attitudes maximally. Types of social attitudes include honesty, discipline, attitude of responsibility, tolerance, mutual cooperation, modesty, and self-confidence. Student social attitude is important to develop and possess students in learning, because it is very closely related to aspects that must be mastered by students, in order to achieve the expected learning outcomes. The development of students' social attitudes is very important, especially by educators, in particular. and generally by the Master, through the application of appropriate learning models. Based on the results of relevant research and literature review reveal the potential of cooperative learning model to develop students' social attitudes in classroom learning activities. It is suggested to educators to develop students' social attitudes as well as to promote improved learning outcomes, and social attitudes expected to be held by students as the basic capital for life in the future.
