Abstract

The aim of this study is to know  the differences of enhancement in mathematical problem solving ability (MPSA) between the students who received soft skill-based metacognitive learning (SSML) with the students who got conventional learning (CL). This research is a quasi experimental design with pretest-postest control group. The population in this study is the students of Junior High School in Pekanbaru city. The sample consist of 135 students, 68 of them are from the high-level school, and 67 students are from the middle-level school. The instruments are mathematical prior knowledge (MPK) test, MPSA test, instruction observation sheet, students journal about the lesson, and the guideline for interview. The data was analyzed using t-test and two-way ANOVA. The result of data analysis indicates: (1) overall, the enhancement of students' MPSA with SSML approach significantly is higher than those with conventional learning (CL); (2) there is no interaction between the learning approach (SSML and CL) with the school level (high and middle) toward the enhancement of MPSA; (3) there is no interaction between the learning approach (SSML and CL) with MPK (upper, middle, and low) toward the enhancement of MPSA.

Abstract

The students' difficulty which was found is in the problem of understanding, drawing diagrams, reading the charts correctly, conceptual formal mathematical understanding, and mathematical problem-solving. The appropriate problem representation is the basic way in order to understand the problem itself and make a plan to solve it. This research was the experimental classroom design with a pretest-posttest control in order to increase the representation of visual thinking ability on mathematical problem-solving approach with contextual learning. The research instrument was a test, observation, and interviews. Contextual approach increases of mathematical representations ability increases in students with high initial category, medium, and low compared to conventional approaches.

Abstract

This quasi-experimental study aims to determine the impact of realistic mathematics education (RME) on increasing Mathematical Problem-Solving Abilities (MPSA). The research design used was the non-equivalent control group with the subject population of all junior high school students in the city of Yogyakarta originating from low (C), moderate (B), and high (A) levels. From each school level, one school was taken then from each school taken an experimental class that received RME and one class of control who received regular learning (PB). The instrument used is in the form of two sets of equivalent MPSA tests. Data analysis uses the t-test and Anava. The results of the research were: (1) an increase in the MPSA of RME students was higher than the increase in the MPSA of PB students for all students and all levels of the school; (2) the highest increase in MPSA for RME students occurs at level A schools; and (3) there is no interaction between learning at school level in increasing MPSA.

Abstract

Pemecahan masalah matematis yang berkaitan dengan materi pecahan adalah salah satu materi matematika yang sulit bagi siswa SD/MI. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengkaji pengaruh penggunaan media visual terhadap kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis. Eksperimen dengan disain penelitian two groups pre-test post-test control group design ini menetapkan populasi seluruh siswa kelas V MIN Tungkop Aceh Besar dengan lima kelas paralel. Sampel diambil secara purposif dua kelas dari tiga kelas unggul yang ada di MIN tersebut, masing-masing satu kelas dijadikan sebagai kelas yang mendapat perlakuan (treatment) dengan jumlah siswa 35 orang dan satu kelas lagi sebagai kelas kontrol dengan jumlah siswa 34 orang. Di kelas perlakuan (treatment) pembelajaran pecahan dilaksanakan dengan menggunakan media visual dan di kelas kontrol pembelajaran pecahan dilaksanakan dengan cara konvensional. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakaninstrumen kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis untuk siswa (tes esei).  Untuk pengujian hipotesis, data pretes dan postes kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis, dan data peningkatan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis terlebih dahulu diperiksa persyaratan analisisnya berupa homogenitas dan normalitas. Pengujian hipotesis menggunakan uji-t pada taraf signifikansi 5%. Pengolahan data dengan menggunakan SPSS 17.0 for Windows telah diperoleh (1) Kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa yang mendapat pembelajaran dengan media visual lebih baik daripada kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa yang mendapat pembelajaran secara konvensional, dan (2) Peningkatan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa yang mendapat pembelajaran dengan menggunakan media visual lebih baik daripada peningkatan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa yang mendapat pembelajaran secara konvensional. Berdasarkan temuan ini, maka direkomendasikan kepada guru SD/MI bahwa ketika mengajar matematika khususnya topik pecahan, hendaknya menggunakan media visual sehingga siswa lebih mudah memahami konsep maupun pemecahan masalah matematis. Kata kunci: Pembelajaran dengan menggunakan media visual, pecahan,   pemecahan masalah matematis.

Abstract

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menelaah perbedaan peningkatan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis antara siswa yang mendapatkan pembelajaran kooperatif tipe Jigsaw dan siswa yang mendapatkan pembelajaran  konvensional, serta sikap siswa terhadap pembelajaran kooperatif tipe Jigsaw. Desain penelitian yang digunakan adalah Pretest-Postest Control Group Design. Kelompok eksperimen memperoleh pembelajaran kooperatif tipe Jigsaw dan kelompok kontrol memperoleh pembelajaran konvensional. Untuk mendapatkan data hasil penelitian digunakan instrumen antara lain; tes kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis dan skala sikap siswa. Penelitian ini dilakukan di Sekolah Menengah Atas dengan level tinggi. Populasi penelitian ini adalah siswa SMA Negeri 1 Rengat Propinsi Riau dengan responden penelitiannya adalah siswa kelas X sebanyak dua kelas yang dipilih secara acak kelas dari delapan yang ada. Dari hasil pengolahan data dengan menggunakan SPSS 16 uji normalitas dan uji beda dua rerata (uji-t) menunjukkan bahwa terdapat perbedaan peningkatan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis  siswa yang mendapat pembelajaran kooperatif tipe Jigsaw dan siswa yang mendapat pembelajaran konvensional. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa pembelajaran dengan model kooperatif tipe Jigsaw secara signifikan dapat lebih meningkatkan kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis siswa SMA dibandingkan dengan pembelajaran konvensional.Kata kunci: kemampuan pemecahan masalah matematis, pembelajaran kooperatif tipe Jigsaw

Abstract

The focus of this research is on the development of mathematics teaching and learning activity which is based on the application of computer software. The aim of research is as follows : 1) to identify some mathematics topics which feasible to be presented by computer-based e-learning, 2) design, develop, and implement computer-based e-learning on mathematics, and 3) analyze the impact of computer-based e-learning in the enhancement of SMA students’ high order mathematical thinking. All activity in this research achieved in 2 phases. In the first phase, the following activities are conducted: analysis theoretically topics which are difficult to be delivered by conventional methods, need too many repetitions, need high accuracy, need high speed process, and can be presented more interestingly. In the second phase, the following activities are conducted: designing, developing, and implementing a number of teaching and research instruments; implementing computer-based e-learning on mathematics for SMA students’, and analyzing the impact of computer-based e-learning in the enhancement of SMA students’ high- order mathematical thinking. Key words: computer-based e-learning model, high-order mathematical thinking

Abstract

The facility layout design problem is concerned with determining the location of a number of facilities which optimises a prescribed objective such as profit, cost, or distance. This problem arises in many applications; for example, in design of buildings and in plant layout design. Most approaches for solving this problem are heuristic in nature and based on graph theoretic concepts. Graph theoretically, when the objective is to maximize profit, the facility layout design problem is to determine, in a given edge weighted graph G, a maximum weight planar sub graph. In this paper, a new heuristic based on graph theoretic concepts is presented. A comparative analysis based on 3600 random test problems demonstrates the value of this algorithm. Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini adalah kuasi eksperimen dengan disain kontrol pre dan post tes pada mata kuliah Bilangan terhadap 67 mahasiswa calon guru SD di suatu universitas di Bandung Tahun Akademik 2010/2011. Kelompok eksperimen mendapatkan perlakuan berupa pembelajaran dengan pendekatan induktif. Instrumen yang digunakan terdiri dari: Tes Kemampuan Awal Matematis (KAM), Tes Kemampuan Penalaran Deduktif Matematis (KPDM), pedoman observasi, kamera photo, dan wawancara. Analisis data menggunakan ANOVA dua Jalur. Berdasarkan analisis data diperoleh kesimpulan bahwa: (1) Tidak terdapat interaksi antara faktor TKAM dan pembelajaran terhadap KPDM dan (2) Kemampuan Induksi Matematis tergolong rendah.Kata kunci: Pembelajaran dengan Pendekatan Induktif, Penalaran Deduktif Matematis, Kemampuan Induksi Matematis, dan Mahasiswa calon guru SD.

Abstract

One of skills which must be achieved by mathematics pre-service teachers is the basic skills of teaching mathematics. By having these skills, the pre-service teachers are expected to be able to become qualified teachers of the field they are going to have. However, there are still many mathematics pre-service teachers and mathematics teachers who haven’t achieved good basic skills of teaching mathematics. This was one of many factors that cause students’ low achievement in math. This study aims at solving the problem by developing learning materials with Search-Solve-Create-Share strategy to enhance the pre-service teachers’ basic skills of teaching mathematics. The research method used in this study is modified research and development method. In a nutshell, this study provides a significant contribution towards research in the mathematics education field particularly in producing suitable learning materials to enhance the pre-service teachers’ basic skills of teaching mathematics. Keywords: Basic Skills of Teaching Mathematics, Learning Material, Search-Solve-Create-Share

Abstract

Geometry has abstract notions to be learnt so that all those notions cannot be just transferred into students’ mind like a bunch of information that should be memorized. Students need to construct those concepts during their learning process. This process of knowledge construction can be considered as an abstraction process. This study aimed to qualitatively compare abstraction process of students who learned the topic of triangle in conventional method and in van Hiele model of teaching aided by Geometers’ sketchpad. Subjects of this study were junior high school students in grade 7. This is a qualitative study with grounded theory design. Data were collected through classroom observation, test, and task-based interview. Results of the study show that theoretical abstraction processes tend to dominate classrom with conventional method of teaching while classroom with van Hiele model of teaching aided by Geometers’ sketchpad accommodated empirical abstraction process of the students.
