Abstract

Limit is the main topic in calculus which is already introduced and thought to students since senior high school level. However, quite a lot of students find difficult to learn and to understand limit at the first year of university level. This article discusses how to identify student’s procedural-knowledge and conceptual- understanding about limit. The method used to identify student’s procedural-knowledge and conceptual- understanding about limit was by giving a test to students about limit problems. The problems were designed so simple in order to avoid mistakes that students made because of the difficulty of questions. The finding of test results show that there were some students whom could answer questions about limit procedurally well, but they had problem to solve questions about limit related to conceptual understanding. This problem could be caused by the learning about limit when they were at senior high school level only focused on how to solve questions about limit procedural.DOI: 10.22342/jpm.13.1.6706.73-82

Abstract

Integrating computational thinking into Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) assessments presents a significant challenge for Indonesian students, particularly in mathematics education. Despite its crucial role in problem-solving, computational thinking has not been widely implemented by students due to the presence of learning obstacles. This study aims to identify the learning obstacles that junior high school students encounter in understanding systems of linear equations in two variables, specifically about their computational thinking abilities. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological method was employed. Research instruments included a computational thinking test and a semi-structured interview guide. Data were collected from 20 students at a junior high school in Wonosobo Regency, Indonesia. Data analysis consisted of three stages: reduction, display, and conclusion. The findings reveal that students experience three types of learning obstacles—epistemological, ontogenical, and didactical when engaging with systems of linear equations in two variables, indicating that these obstacles hinder the development of their mathematical computational thinking skills.

Abstract

Geometry is a field of mathematical study closely related to spatial reasoning and its many uses in everyday life. The purpose of this study was to photograph the spatial reasoning ability of junior high school students in doing spatial tasks from a gender perspective and their perceptions of the geometry material and mathematics. A qualitative approach was chosen to describe the research findings. One hundred two junior high school students in Sleman Yogyakarta participated in spatial reasoning tests, interviews, and questionnaires. Data analysis uses data reduction, data presentation, and verification stages. The results showed that the average student's spatial reasoning ability was still low, 42.09. Most students mastered spatial tasks in spatial orientation, while the students' mastery of spatial reasoning was the weakest in the element of spatial visualization. From a gender perspective, male students showed superior spatial reasoning abilities than female students. Students perceive mathematics and geometry as complex materials, but they are essential to learning because of their many benefits in everyday life.

Abstract

Mathematics is a subject that has been taught since elementary school with the aim of training students to think critically, logically, systematically, and solve problems. In fact, many students experience difficulties in learning mathematics, especially in fractional material This study aims to identify mistakes made by elementary school students in solving fractional problems using Newman's Error Analysis (NEA). Through a descriptive qualitative approach, this study analyzes the results of student work on fractional questions based on five stages of NEA: reading error, comprehension error, transformation error, process skills error, and encoding error). Data was collected through written tests and interviews, involving students from UPI Laboratory Elementary School, Pelita Bangsa Elementary School, and SDN 272 Sukasari. Student errors are then grouped by NEA stages to identify the most mistakes made by students. The results of the study showed that students made mistakes at all stages of the NEA. The most common mistakes experienced by students are at the comprehension error and process skill error stages. There are still many students who are not able to represent fractions with pictures and students also still make many mistakes in the fraction operation process. Based on the results of the research, it was concluded that students still had difficulties in fractional material by seeing the mistakes made by students when working on fractional problems. It is necessary to improve students' conceptual understanding and procedural skills in fractional materials.

Abstract

Geometry has abstract notions to be learnt so that all those notions cannot be just transferred into students' mind like a bunch of information that should be memorized. Students need to construct those concepts during their learning process. This process of knowledge construction can be considered as an abstraction process. This study aimed to qualitatively compare abstraction process of students who learned the topic of triangle in conventional method and in van Hiele model of teaching aided by Geometers' sketchpad. Subjects of this study were junior high school students in grade 7. This is a qualitative study with grounded theory design. Data were collected through classroom observation, test, and task-based interview. Results of the study show that theoretical abstraction processes tend to dominate classrom with conventional method of teaching while classroom with van Hiele model of teaching aided by Geometers' sketchpad accommodated empirical abstraction process of the students.

Abstract

Coronaviruses disease (Covid-19) pandemic forces schools to implement schools from home through online learning. This study aims to describe online mathematics learning, examine differences in aspects of spatial reasoning, and spatial reasoning based on gender. We conducted a survey method on 140 participants in one private junior high school in Yogyakarta. Data collection using an spatial reasoning test via Google Form consist of nine questions and direct interview with a teacher through video conference. Data analysis uses descriptive and inferential statistics. The results showed that online mathematics learning using the Google Form platform can assist students with limited facilities in learning process. The research finding showed no difference in spatial reasoning ability between male and female students, including in each aspect of spatial reasoning. In addition, other findings indicate that the aspect of spatial reasoning that students master the most is spatial visualization, while the aspect of spatial reasoning that is the least mastered by students is spatial relations.

Abstract

The change from PMM (Merdeka Mengajar Platform) to Ruang GTK requires further study investigating how the Ruang GTK is utilised compared to PMM. The present qualitative study aims to describe the experiences of 15 mathematics teachers (13 teachers and two vice principals) in using Ruang GTK compared to their previous experiences using PMM. The study spanned six weeks and was conducted online and offline. The data were collected through interviews and audiovisual materials, with interview guidelines developed based on an adaptation of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM3) constructs: perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, job relevance, voluntariness, and use. The data underwent a three-stage analysis process, encompassing data condensation, data presentation, verification, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that more and more participants rarely use Ruang GTK due to motivational factors, changes in the curriculum, and the need to attend many offline trainings. The discrepancy in the advantages accruing from utilizing Ruang GTK compared to PMM can be attributed to the substantial diminution in teacher workload. Ruang GTK is easier to operate, especially because it eliminates features that confuse teachers. Lastly, many of the participants now access the Ruang GTK only when there is an obligation or demand from their superiors, and only a few
