Abstract

The facility layout design problem is concerned with determining the location of a number of facilities which optimises a prescribed objective such as profit, cost, or distance. This problem arises in many applications; for example, in design of buildings and in plant layout design. Most approaches for solving this problem are heuristic in nature and based on graph theoretic concepts. Graph theoretically, when the objective is to maximize profit, the facility layout design problem is to determine, in a given edge weighted graph G, a maximum weight planar sub graph. In this paper, a new heuristic based on graph theoretic concepts is presented. A comparative analysis based on 3600 random test problems demonstrates the value of this algorithm.

Abstract

Geometry has abstract notions to be learnt so that all those notions cannot be just transferred into students' mind like a bunch of information that should be memorized. Students need to construct those concepts during their learning process. This process of knowledge construction can be considered as an abstraction process. This study aimed to qualitatively compare abstraction process of students who learned the topic of triangle in conventional method and in van Hiele model of teaching aided by Geometers' sketchpad. Subjects of this study were junior high school students in grade 7. This is a qualitative study with grounded theory design. Data were collected through classroom observation, test, and task-based interview. Results of the study show that theoretical abstraction processes tend to dominate classrom with conventional method of teaching while classroom with van Hiele model of teaching aided by Geometers' sketchpad accommodated empirical abstraction process of the students.

Abstract

The emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic has created a great degree of uncertainty about the future of education and has required teachers and students to shift from face-to-face to online learning. This study analyze prospective mathematics teachers' perceptions of online learning. This research was conducted using a survey method to see the perceptions of prospective mathematics teachers in online learning mode. Respondents comprised 953 prospective mathematics teachers from 34 provinces in Indonesia, consisting of 172 men and 781 women. Instruments used to collect data were questionnaires and open questions. Based on the percentage results of each of the findings of this study, the data is presented and analyzed more qualitatively. There are three main findings in this study. First, prospective mathematics teachers experience problems in online learning, namely problems with technology, networking, internet quota, motivation and self-management, lecturer constraints, number of courses, socioeconomic factors, learning resources, interactions with peers, and health problems. Second, prospective teachers have strategies to overcome this, including increasing peer collaboration, managing study time, and optimizing learning resources. Third, prospective teachers express dissatisfaction with the implementation of online learning and the reasons for this dissatisfaction. This research has implications for teachers and prospective mathematics teachers to understand online learning by utilizing ICT and increasing efforts to be independent.
