Abstract

Background: Indonesia is recorded as having a fairly high incidence of maternal and infant mortality compared to other developing countries. The number of deaths of newborn babies in 2015 was 33,278 cases, down from 32,007 cases in 2015 and 10,294 cases in the first quarter of 2017. Low Birth Weight (LBW) cases were one of the factors that led to infant deaths, amounting to 38,85 % of cases occur in Indonesia. Babies experience LBW if their birth weight does not reach 2,500 grams. The occurrence of LBW can be controlled by the nutritional condition of pregnant women. Maternal nutritional status at risk of LBW cases can be measured using anthropometry, namely Mid-Upper Arm Circumference Measure (MUAC) and Body Mass Index (BMI). Pregnant women have a high risk if the MUAC number is <23.5 cm and BMI <18. Objectives: This literature study was conducted to analyze the influence of pregnant women's Mid-Upper Arm Circumference Measure (MUAC) on the risk of LBW. Methods: This article was written using a systematic review method. The data sources for the articles were obtained from Science Direct literature articles, PubMed, Google Scholar and 10 relevant articles were obtained. Articles are limited to original research used with publication years 2017 to 2022. Results: Exposure to infectious and non-infectious diseases can worsen the effects of malnutrition on pregnant women and the fetus they are carrying, thus having an impact on the occurrence of LBW. which is 20 times compared to the birth of a baby with ideal body weight. Conclusions: This review concludes that MUAC of pregnant women has a strong relationship with LBW problems.

Abstract

Background: Wasting remains a significant public health problem in Surabaya. Wasting may hinder optimal performance during a child's golden years, the first 1,000 days of life, which has a significant impact on the quality of Indonesia's future human resources. Child conditions such as low birth weight and short birth length may increase the risk of wasting. Objectives: To analyze the relationship between birth length and birth weight and the incidence of wasting in children under two years in Surabaya city. Methods: Cross-sectional study design using secondary data. The total sample included 160 children selected by consecutive sampling from the working areas of Putat Jaya, Semimi, Tanah Kalikeding and Bangkingan Surabaya Health Center.Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation test. Results: The proportion of wasting was 13.8%. The study findings revealed a relationship between birth weight and the occurrence of wasting in Surabaya city (p = 0.030 The study did not identify any relationship between birth length and the occurrence of wasting (p = 0.675). Conclusions: Evidence from the study supports a relation between birth weight and wasting in children under two years in Surabaya City. However, birth length is not associated with the occurrence of wasting.

Abstract

Introduction:  This study aims to assess the differences in knowledge, attitudes, practices, and salt intake among older adults with and without OB-HT in an institutional setting. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among 50 older adults (25 with OB-HT and 25 controls) in a nursing home in Indonesia. A visual-based questionnaire assessed sodium knowledge and attitude. Salt taste sensitivity was evaluated using a ranked salt intensity test on chicken soup formulations with varying salt levels (0.612–1.125 g/100 mL), and salt preference was measured using a hedonic sensory test. Energy and sodium intake were estimated using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). Statistical analysis included chi-square, t-test, and Mann-Whitney U test (p < 0.05). Results: There was no significant difference in sodium-related food knowledge; however, males had lower sodium knowledge scores (p = 0.029). Attitudes toward high-sodium foods differed significantly only among males (p = 0.023). Older adults with OB-HT exhibited significantly lower salt taste sensitivity, particularly among males (p = 0.043), and demonstrated a stronger preference for higher sodium concentrations in food (p = 0.046). Notably, sodium intake differed only among females (p = 0.047). Conclusions: This study highlighted the relationship between OB-HT and dietary habits, emphasizing the need to identify sex-specific differences in knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding salt intake among older adults.
