Abstract

Energy drinks are popular among various groups of people, such as teenagers and working individuals. These beverages are consumed to provide additional energy and improve focus. This research investigates the relationship between energy drinks and blood pressure and heart rate in students of the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia. The study used the open trial – randomized cross-over study method and collected primary data through experiments. The sample consisted of students from the Faculty of Medicine at Universitas Airlangga, aged 19 to 22 years, with a normal body mass index ranging from 18.5 to 24.9. The systolic, diastolic, and heart rate values were measured before and after consuming energy drinks. A total of 38 research samples were used, including 22 males (57.8%) and 16 females (42.1%). Energy drinks such as Kratingdaeng and Extra Joss showed a significant increase in blood pressure. However, no significant changes were observed in heart rate. The results of the Wilcoxon statistical test, comparing systolic and diastolic conditions before and after consuming Extra Joss, showed p<0.0001. A significance level of p<0.05 indicates a significant effect of energy drinks on the students. The Wilcoxon test for Kratingdaeng also yielded a p<0.0001. For the p-value through the Wilcoxon test on diastolic values before and after consuming Extra Joss and Kratingdaeng, the result was p<0.05. However, the Wilcoxon test for heart rate before and after consuming Kratingdaeng and Extra Joss had a at p<0.05. In the Mann-Whitney statistical test, a p<0.05 was found only in the post-systolic condition, while other conditions had at p≥0.05. In conclusion, energy drinks significantly affected blood pressure, but no significant changes were observed in heart rate.

Abstract

Since it was found in 1940's, the use of plastic has become a habit, as it is convenient and cheap. It products in a world scale more than 300 million tonnes. What we have to pay for that convenience and cheapness is now obvious. The waste of plastic goods is everywhere. Nowadays, even in rural areas, plastic waste pollutes the environment. Even in the middle of the oceans, islands of plastic refuse are there in the currents. These garbages are deadly to marine life. Globally, we now discard about eight million tonnes of plastics. When it ends up in the seas, fish and turtles take it as a food, swallow it to death or die of starvation because what they have consumed is not real food.

Abstract

Highlights: Boarding school is a high-risk location for tuberculosis transmission. Therefore, stricter early prevention measures are required. Gender and knowledge level were significantly related to latent tuberculosis infection, but there was no significant relationship between age and nutritional status. Low level of knowledge was the highest risk factor compared to other factors, with a five times greater risk of contracting latent tuberculosis infection.   Abstract Introduction: Tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), is a highly contagious airborne disease. High-risk environments with frequent close interactions contribute to the spread of TB. This study examined latent TB infection (LTBI) epidemiology in such settings to inform public health interventions and strategies to curb TB transmission in similar environments. Methods: This cross-sectional observational study, conducted from January to August 2022 at two boarding schools in Bangkalan, involved 100 adolescents aged 10-18 years old tested for latent tuberculosis infection using interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) release assay (IGRA). Data were collected via questionnaires. Bivariate analysis was used to determine the correlation between latent tuberculosis infection prevalence and each research variable using Pearson Correlation and odds ratio (OR) to find risk factors for each variable. A p<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: This study found that 30% of 100 adolescents in boarding schools had latent tuberculosis infection. Risk analysis showed a significant association between gender and LTBI (p=0.000), with males having a higher risk with an odds ratio (OR) of 1.02 times. Additionally, lower education levels were significantly associated with a higher risk of LTBI (p=0.021) with an odds ratio of 5.2 times. Conclusion: Boarding schools pose a tuberculosis transmission risk. Early latent tuberculosis infection screening is essential for tuberculosis eradication in Indonesia, and these findings emphasize the need to improve latent tuberculosis infection detection and prophylaxis therapy as a preventive measure against tuberculosis outbreaks.
