Abstract

When the goals in teaching pronunciation are that students attain “near-native” and “socially acceptable” pronunciation, and are assessed with a valid and reliable instrument using the Praat device and human interpretation raters, a new way to assess pronunciation skills is needed. This article proposes such a new way. Through suprasegmental identity (rhythm), English teachers’ pronunciation skill (E-TPS) will be correctly assessed. Using Praat as a device and human raters for interpretation to assess E-TPS stands on several premises. First, the measures of pronunciation constructs should be valid and reliable. Second, the role of raters in English pronunciation assessment presents unique challenges in drawing valid inferences from performance, in scoring assignments, in making decisions for which a pronunciation assessment was intended, to the pedagogical and social consequences beyond, and to connect concerns in giving judgments. Third, the raters should have familiarity with both accent and content. Fourth, a suprasegmental (stress, rhythm, and intonation) approach is an important complement to segmental teaching. Fifth, rhythm plays a big role and is defined as a “continuum” of functions and effects in pronunciation assessment. Sixth, the trend among the technology-minded for testing using automated assessment of pronunciation has as its goal accuracy in imitating native speakers, as is reflected in the use of Praat as a device. Therefore, the blending approach (Praat and raters) represents the future in assessing E-TPS.

“One of its obvious results is the emergence of intercultural communication and English language has then become as a bridge for cross-cultural communication, thanks to its worldwide lingua franca. For these reasons, Intercultural Communication Competence (ICC) should be more concerned in English Language Teaching (ELT) tertiary contexts. This study aims to gain an indepth understanding on this issue by investigating English teachers' perceptions and practices on ICC in ELT . The study uses a mixed method, to find the perspective of the lecturers, the researcher use questionnaire and interview, while for the practice the reseracher use observation. The findings of the study reveal the positive attitudes of English lecturers on ICC in ELT, but certain challenges confronted by their implementations have been highlighted. As a result, some possible measures to enhance ICC engagement in ELT in this context are proposed.”

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the use of politeness strategies in male and female teachers’ classrooms. Since the nature of student-teacher interaction was often influenced by the teachers’ actions and utterances, it was necessary to investigate the politeness based on the teachers’ gender perspectives, where those interactions could sometimes be felt as eitherthreatening or enjoyable. Investigating how male and female teachers’ politeness resulted in enjoyable student-teacher interaction differently, to empower the EFL classroom, this study also elaborated how the power of politeness strategies maximizes the EFL student-teacher interaction. The participants are several teachers and students who conduct the English Intensive Course Program in an undergraduate university, where they interact using English during the classes. In addition, this research followed a qualitative research design and used observation to collect data. Applying Brown and Levinson’s theory of politeness, the results show that politeness strategies bring a lively and friendly atmosphere during the classroom interaction. Specifically for female teachers who mostly use positive politeness strategies, they build more interaction with the students than male teachers. Positive politeness strategy focused on the students’ positive face by expressing the number of utterances that the students want to be listened to. It keeps students to have willingness to communicate so that the student-teacher interaction in the EFL classroom can be maximized

Abstract

HOTS promote the idea of assessing students’ critical thinking, creative thinking, and problem solving. Many teachers claimed to implement HOTS in the classroom, but turned out they tended to have LOTS in their teaching and learning process. Since the teaching and learning process has shifted from in person meeting to the virtual one due to COVID-19, there was an adjustment to conduct the learning process. Hence, the present study aimed to figure out teacher’s strategies to deliver HOTS’ instruction, students’ HOTS, and the construction of HOTS’ instruction during online learning. This study employed qualitative research and two English teachers were involved. The data was gathered through classroom observation. The findings revealed that direct instruction and questioning strategies were efficient and effective to activate students’ HOTS through asking the students’ point of views about online and offline learning systems and having the students’ work in group to discuss a certain topic. Further, analyzing and evaluating procedural knowledge and metacognitive knowledge were the most abilities exposed by the instructions. In this case, the students activated their critical thinking, creative thinking during online learning. Then, the instructions delivered by the teachers during the class promoted students’ creative thinking and critical thinking because they encouraged students’ creativity, motivated their self-confidence to participate in the class, had the students be communicative, and exposed students’ understanding and knowledge. The instructions were clear enough and reflected imperative and interrogative sentences, so that the students easily understood what they needed to do during the learning process. However, one teacher could not promote HOTS pretty well because he encouraged the students to talk about direct and indirect speech, which was the area about understanding conceptual knowledge.

Abstract

This study aims at describing critical thinking subskills taught by Indonesian EFL teachers in academic writing and explaining how they taught the subskills. This qualitative study used two Indonesian EFL teachers who taught academic writing at one of state universities in Surabaya. Data were collected using observation checklist and field note. The obtained data were analyzed using interactive model analysis. Results showed that there were three out of forty critical thinking subskills that were not taught by the teachers namely providing and selecting the best examples, using credible sources, and maintaining the consistency of tenses choice. Another finding showed that there were seven ways of teaching critical thinking subskills namely individual consultation and feedback, class explanation, peer-feedback, groupwork of ideas construction and discussion, general class feedback, analysis task, and work review and discussion. This study suggests that EFL teachers can use the forty critical thinking subskills in teaching writing through one of the seven ways of teaching found.

Abstract

Background: The ability to adapt, imitate and modify knowledge in a learning context into another learning context is an important ability for students. However, the ability of pre-service English teachers to adapt their knowledge and skills from one course to other courses has not been studied. This research seeks to find out how pre-service English teachers in one state university in Indonesia adapt knowledge and skills acquired in the Syllabus Design (SD) and Developing EFL Materials (DEM) courses into ESP Program Design (ESP PD) and ESP Materials Development (ESP MD) courses. Methodology: This research is a mixed quantitative and qualitative study involving 54 students who have taken SD, DEM, ESP PD and ESP MD courses in 2022 in a state university in Indonesia. Fifteen of them also took part in a focus group discussion. Their answers to the semi-open questionnaire asking whether the 16 knowledge and skills learned in SD and DEM courses had been adapted were analyzed in a simple quantitative manner with percentages and modes. While the results of focus group discussion about how they adapted them were analyzed qualitatively for themes.Findings: The results of this study show that 15 knowledge and skills in SD and DEM courses were adapted by students into ESP PD and ESP MD courses. The participants adapted them by changing the context of the syllabus and materials the developed in SD and DEM from English at school to English for specific purposes in ESP PD and ESP MD especially when formulating learning objectives. They also developed general English materials into ESP English materials for certain occupations. These findings indicate that students master the contexts of ESP PD and ESP MD.Conclusion: It can be concluded that pre-service English teachers have excellent adaptation skills, which are done not by force, but by choice, to the peripheral component and for the benefit of students. Originality: This is the contribution of this research to students’ learning theory in ESP in English teacher education to add to Leko’s (2015) Evidence by Practice (EBP) theory.
