Abstract

Abstract

KATA KUNCI: cerita rakyat Panjalu; tradisi Nyangku; relasi sakral manusia–alam; transmisi nilai budaya   SACRED HUMAN-NATURE RELATIONS IN PANJALU FOLKTALES: A STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE NYANGKU TRADITION AS A MEDIUM FOR TRANSMITTING CULTURAL VALUES     ABSTRACT: Folktales and the Nyangku tradition constitute an important cultural heritage of the Panjalu community, representing a sacred relationship between humans, nature, and ancestors. However, previous studies have tended to focus on descriptive aspects of rituals and religious values without systematically examining how human–nature relations are constructed through the narrative structures of folktales. This gap reveals a discrepancy between folkloristic theory, which emphasizes the importance of narrative structure, and existing research practices that remain largely thematic. This study aims to structurally analyze the sacred human–nature relationship embedded in Panjalu folktales that underlie the Nyangku tradition and to explain their function as a medium for transmitting cultural values. The study employed a qualitative descriptive-interpretative approach using Structural-Based Analysis of folktales collected through in-depth interviews with traditional elders, custodians, and Panjalu community members, as well as observations of the Nyangku tradition. The findings indicate that Panjalu folktales possess a systematic narrative structure with cause–effect patterns that place harmony among humans, nature, and ancestors at the core of the stories. Human–nature relations are constructed as relational-sacred rather than utilitarian, integrating religious, social, moral, and historical values. This study concludes that Panjalu folktales and the Nyangku tradition form a Relational–Sacred System of Nature Values that sustains the cultural identity of the Panjalu community through narrative and ritual practices. Abstract

This study aims to analyse the role of debate learning in improving students' critical and argumentative thinking skills. Debate learning is an effective method to train analytical thinking skills and craft strong arguments. However, understanding the extent to which debate learning affects this ability in students is still limited. This research uses a qualitative approach with a needs analysis method to explore students' experiences and views related to debate learning. Data was obtained through interviews and documentation studies involving students from various departments. The results show that learning debate significantly improves students' critical thinking skills, allows them to be more open to accepting different opinions, and strengthens their ability to build logical and structured arguments. In addition, this study also found that debate learning positively impacts the development of students' communication and persuasion skills. In conclusion, debate learning has an important role in improving the quality of students' critical and argumentative thinking, so it can be an effective method in higher education to prepare students to face challenges in the professional world.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the fading of oral traditions amid modernization, particularly the mantras of the Pandeglang community, which have been viewed solely as ritual texts without literary value. The main problem this research addresses is how the representation of cultural values, power relations, and ideology is manifested in mantras, and how these texts can serve as a medium for critical literacy in secondary education. The purpose of this research is to uncover the linguistic structures, discursive practices, and social contexts that shape the discourse of mantras, while also proposing their use in strengthening cultural literacy in schools. The research uses a critical constructivist paradigm with an interpretive, qualitative approach, drawing on Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis model and discourse ethnography. Data in the form of 11 Sundanese-Banten mantra texts were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and field documentation. The analysis shows that mantras function not only as spiritual means but also as ideological discourses that reproduce the moral, spiritual, and social values of the Pandeglang community. Socially, mantras become a cultural literacy practice that strengthens local identity and power relations. At the same time, pedagogically, they have the potential to become a source of critical literacy learning in high schools. The research conclusion confirms that mantras are performative texts that contain educational, spiritual, and ideological power—a form of local literacy that remains relevant for fostering reflective awareness and cultural identity among the younger generation.

Abstract

The low interest and critical literacy skills of students in the archipelago, especially the Buton Islands, are a serious challenge in literacy education. This problem is exacerbated by the limited learning media contextual and relevant to the local culture. This research aims to shift the form of Randasitagi and Wairiwondu folklore from traditional narrative texts to video storytelling content as an interactive and culture-based literacy learning medium. The method used is qualitative descriptive with a case study approach. Data was collected through interviews with teachers and students, learning observations, and documentation of junior high school students' learning outcomes. The study results show that converting folklore into videos can increase students' attraction to literacy materials, encourage active cognitive engagement, and stimulate critical and argumentative thinking skills in debate and discussion sessions. Video storytelling based on local stories has proven more effective than conventional text media in bridging students' cultural context with learning content. This study concludes that transforming local narratives into multimodal visual formats serves as cultural preservation and a pedagogical strategy relevant to the literacy needs of the 21st century. These findings open up opportunities for further development in folklore-based interactive media from various other regions to be applied in school contextual learning.

Abstract

The low interest in reading and students' appreciation of poetry at the high school level is an essential issue in learning literature at school. Poetry material is considered abstract and non-contextual, which makes it difficult for students to understand and appreciate its content and values. This research aims to create an anthology of thematic poetry based on traditional Sundanese Tatar cuisine that pays attention to aesthetic values, poetic language, and cultural content relevant to high school students' psychological and social development. The method used is research-based creation research with a qualitative approach. Data was obtained through observation, interviews with teachers and students, and documentation of the creative process and the results of poetry products. The study results show that poems that raise local culinary themes can increase students' attraction and emotional involvement with literary texts. The poetic language that uses everyday diction and sensory imagery has been proven to facilitate understanding while strengthening students' aesthetic experiences. In addition, students show a greater interest in exploring local culture through poetry, which has a positive impact on increasing literary appreciation and meaning. Thus, the creation of this culinary-based poetry anthology is not only a creative solution to students' low interest in poetry but also contributes to the preservation of local culture and the development of literary teaching materials that are communicative, contextual, and support meaningful learning.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low attention paid to the development of emotional literacy in elementary school students in learning, which has so far been dominated by cognitive aspects. In fact, the ability to recognize, understand, and manage emotions is an important part of 21st-century competencies. The use of folklore as a learning medium rich in moral and emotional values has not been optimally developed in the form of interactive digital media integrated with an emotional self-regulation approach. This indicates a gap between the potential of learning resources based on local wisdom and the needs of modern learning. This study aims to develop a folklore-based flipbook media with an Emotional Self-Regulation approach and to test its feasibility and effectiveness in students' emotional literacy. The study used the Research and Development method with the ADDIE model which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research subjects were fourth-grade students of Trikarsa Elementary School, Bandung. Data collection techniques were carried out through expert validation, observation, interviews, questionnaires, and pretests and posttests. The results showed that the developed flipbook media received a very feasible category based on the assessment of media experts (97.08%) and material experts (82.3%), and was feasible according to literary experts (64.3%). The implementation results showed an increase in students' emotional literacy from 82.2% in the pretest to 90.7% in the posttest, a 9% increase. These findings confirm that folktale-based flipbooks with an Emotional Self-Regulation approach are effective in improving students' emotional literacy. The novelty of this research lies in the integration of digital interactive media, local wisdom, and an Emotional Self-Regulation approach in a single learning design. The implications of this research indicate that innovative media based on local culture can be an alternative strategy in supporting holistic learning in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study addresses the limited ecological readings of Bugis folklore by examining environmental representation and social ecology in the folktale Bakka Maroe. The article aims to analyze how ecological meanings are constructed through narrative symbols, conflict, and cultural values in the tale. This study employs a qualitative interpretive text analysis supported by semi-structured interviews with five purposively selected informants familiar with Bugis oral tradition. The analysis is organized using Garrard’s ecocritical categories of wilderness, animals, apocalypse, dwelling, pollution, and social ecology. The findings show that Bakka Maroe represents nature as a morally charged and unstable space, animals as ambivalent ecological agents, ecological disruption as a cultural warning, settlement as an ecological-political mode of dwelling, pollution as both material and ethical violation, and social ecology as the entanglement of environmental crisis with hierarchy and power. The novelty of this study lies in its integrated reading of environmental representation, social ecology, and cultural wisdom in a Bugis folktale through Garrard’s ecocritical framework, which has not been specifically applied to Bakka Maroe in previous studies.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the psychological impact experienced by readers after reading the novel A untuk Amanda, as well as to reveal the narrative factors that influence their psychological responses. This study employed a mixed methods approach with an explanatory sequential design and a receptive-pragmatic literary psychology approach. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 30 respondents who had read the novel, then analyzed using descriptive quantitative methods and interpreted qualitatively. The results showed that most readers experienced excessive anxiety (63.3%) and sadness (33.3%) after reading the novel. The factor that most influenced readers’ psychological condition was the characters’ behavior (66.7%), indicating the significant role of characterization in building readers’ emotional engagement. Although most respondents reported no long-term psychological impact, some readers demonstrated personal reflection, such as an increased awareness that success is not everything. This study confirms that literary fiction can evoke emotional responses, encourage psychological reflection, and reinforce the relevance of literary psychology approaches that focus on readers’ experiences.
