Abstract

This study explores how Javanese politeness values, or unggah-ungguh, shape communication between waiters and guests in student cafés around leading universities in Semarang, Salatiga, and Surakarta, Central Java. Despite the increasing recognition of intercultural communication in hospitality studies, little attention has been paid to the role of local politeness systems in shaping service interactions. The study aimed to identify how Javanese politeness values are expressed and negotiated in daily hospitality encounters and how these practices influence customer satisfaction. Participants consisted of twenty-four café waiters and six managers, recruited through purposive sampling based on their fluency in Javanese and direct involvement in customer service. Data were collected through participatory observations, semi-structured interviews, and informal group discussions, and analyzed using a thematic qualitative approach. The analysis focused on six key values of Javanese etiquette: sumanak (friendliness), sabar lan sareh (patience and calmness), tepa slira (empathy), andhap asor (humility), empan papan (situational appropriateness), and nuju prana (pleasing others). The findings reveal that consistent application of these values fosters harmonious interaction, strengthens relational bonds, and creates a culturally distinctive atmosphere in the cafés. The study concludes that Javanese politeness functions as a communicative strategy that integrates professionalism with local wisdom, offering insights for culturally grounded hospitality training and intercultural communication research.

Abstract

The strategic establishment of an internationalized status has led many Indonesian universities to implement bilingual policies on campus public signage. However, a significant research gap exists regarding a systematic analysis of the translation quality in this domain, despite its crucial role in projecting the institution's global image. This study aims to investigate the phenomenon of Indonesian-English translation in the public signage at a state university in Surakarta. Employing qualitative research grounded in critical content analysis, data were collected through photographic documentation of 32 public signs. The analysis was framed within the theoretical lens of translation techniques and methods to assess the correspondence between source and target texts. The findings reveal the use of four translation methods: word-for-word, literal, adaptation, and free translation, with the literal method being the most predominant. In terms of translation techniques, adaptation was the most frequently employed, alongside linguistic compression, literal translation, and established equivalence. This indicates a concurrent tendency to retain source-language structures while modifying cultural elements, occasionally leading to inconsistency. The implication is that the university must employ a more considered approach, potentially involving linguistic experts, to ensure the signage achieves clarity, accuracy, and cultural appropriateness for an international audience

Abstract

This study examined the use of speech acts and politeness strategies in political campaign billboards from an applied linguistics perspective. It aimed to reveal how linguistic choices in political messages reflected persuasive and culturally appropriate communication during the 2025–2030 gubernatorial election in Central Java, Indonesia. A total of 200 billboard texts representing two candidate pairs were collected and analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach. The analysis applied speech act theory to identify locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts, as well as politeness maxims to explore social values embedded in the language use. The findings showed that directive and expressive acts were dominant, functioning to attract public sympathy and reinforce candidate credibility. Positive politeness strategies were frequently employed to maintain social harmony and align with Javanese cultural norms of respect and humility. The study contributes to applied linguistics by demonstrating how pragmatic competence operates in real-life persuasive discourse and offers pedagogical insights for teaching pragmatic awareness in political and professional communication contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates how Western movies facilitate students’ cross-cultural understanding in a Cross-Cultural Understanding (CCU) course within an English Literature program in Indonesia. Using a qualitative descriptive design, data were collected over four instructional weeks through classroom observations, audio-video recordings of role-plays, and reflective journals. The findings show a clear progression in students’ intercultural learning. Initially, students experienced cultural dissonance when encountering unfamiliar pragmatic features such as direct refusals, sarcasm, and informal teacher-student interaction. With guided scaffolding, they began to reinterpret these behaviours and develop emerging cultural awareness. By the third week, students engaged in comparative reasoning between Western and Indonesian/Javanese norms, which later evolved into perspective-taking in the final week. Reflective journals reveal increased confidence, pragmatic sensitivity, and deeper cultural insight. Overall, the study concludes that Western movies are effective multimodal input for intercultural learning, but their pedagogical value is maximized when paired with structured discussions and reflective tasks.

Abstract

Abstract

Integrating local culture into language learning creates meaningful and enjoyable experiences for young learners. This study investigates how Central Javanese folktales—such as Timun Mas, Roro Jonggrang, Bawang Merah & Bawang Putih, and Keong Emas—can support English reading and listening skills in primary schools while embedding moral values such as honesty, perseverance, and kindness. The research employed a classroom-based mixed-method design involving 60 fourth-grade students from two primary schools in Surakarta. The instructional intervention was implemented over eight weeks using multimodal storytelling materials that combined illustrated storybooks, audio narration, and interactive classroom activities. Data were collected through classroom observations, student performance assessments, and teacher interviews. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse students’ reading and listening performance, while thematic analysis was applied to interpret observational and interview data. Findings indicate that multimodal folktale-based instruction improves vocabulary acquisition, reading comprehension, and listening accuracy, while also encouraging active speaking through retelling, dramatization, and story discussion. Students additionally demonstrated higher motivation and enjoyment, connecting English learning with culturally familiar narratives and moral reflection. These results highlight the potential of culturally grounded multimodal storytelling as an engaging pedagogical approach for primary English education that integrates linguistic development, moral education, and student-centred learning.

Abstract

The principles of al-Qawā‘id al-Fiqhiyyah al-Iqtishādiyyah serve as a fundamental normative framework for assessing the Sharia compliance of contemporary financial transactions, including Islamic stock trading in the capital market. Among these principles, the rule of al-ghunm bi al-ghurm—which asserts that profit is only legitimate when accompanied by risk—plays a central role in distinguishing Sharia-compliant investment from prohibited speculative practices. This article aims to analyze the challenges and solutions in implementing the al-ghunm bi al-ghurm principle in Islamic stock transactions within the Indonesian Sharia capital market. Employing a qualitative research method based on a literature review, this study examines classical and contemporary fiqh doctrines, DSN-MUI fatwas, and relevant capital market regulations. The findings reveal several key challenges, including low risk literacy among Sharia investors, the emergence of expectations for risk-free returns, speculative trading behavior, and the development of digital investment products that potentially undermine genuine risk-sharing mechanisms. To address these issues, the article proposes strengthening Sharia-based risk education, enhancing risk disclosure and transparency, reaffirming the prohibition of profit guarantees, and improving Sharia screening mechanisms for listed companies. This study underscores the importance of al-ghunm bi al-ghurm as both a normative and practical foundation for fostering a fair, resilient, and sustainable Sharia capital market in Indonesia.
