Abstract

This study investigates the cultural pragmatics of politeness through the integration of Javanese krama inggil expressions in Indonesian academic communication. While most Central Javanese people are bilingual in Javanese and Indonesian, the use of highly respectful Javanese forms within formal Indonesian-language settings remains underexplored. This research aims to examine how Javanese krama inggil expressions are inserted into Indonesian discourse during academic meetings organized by the Higher Education Service Institute Region VI, Central Java. Ten recordings of meeting interactions were analyzed qualitatively to identify the lexical and contextual meanings, politeness levels, and acceptance levels of the inserted expressions. Questionnaire data from lecturers and administrative staff were also collected to assess their perceptions. The findings reveal that krama inggil expressions appear systematically across opening, main, and closing segments of meetings, serving as markers of deference, respect, and cultural identity. The majority of respondents rated these expressions as “polite” or “very polite,” and “acceptable” or “highly acceptable” within Indonesian academic contexts. The results suggest that incorporating local linguistic resources enriches communicative harmony, reinforces cultural values, and demonstrates how politeness strategies transcend linguistic boundaries in multilingual professional settings.

Abstract

This study examines how (im)politeness strategies and institutional power are dynamically negotiated in Indonesian hotel telephone conversations an interactional domain that remains underexplored in pragmatic and hospitality communication research. Drawing on Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory and Culpeper’s impoliteness framework, the analysis investigates not only the types of strategies used but also how front-desk operators reaffirm institutional authority, manage guest dissatisfaction, and perform pragmatic repairs when interactions risk escalating. Data were collected from naturally occurring telephone conversations in several hotels in Surakarta, Indonesia, and analyzed using a qualitative pragmatic approach. The findings show that (im)politeness is an ongoing negotiation shaped by hierarchical service roles, shifting communicative goals, and institutional expectations. Operators predominantly employ positive and negative politeness to maintain professionalism, yet they occasionally shift to off-record strategies, withholding, or mitigated impoliteness to indirectly enforce hotel regulations or handle guest resistance. These moves are typically followed by face-restoring acts to re-establish interactional harmony and protect both individual and institutional face. The study demonstrates that (im)politeness in hotel discourse functions simultaneously as relational management and institutional power performance. Pedagogically, the findings offer insights for developing ESP materials that enhance pragmatic competence in hospitality service communication.

Abstract

Abstract

AbstractLeft indent:1.5 cm  Right indent: 1.5 cm  Language functions as a powerful diplomatic instrument that conveys persuasion, solidarity, and moral commitment in international communication. However, previous studies on speech acts in political discourse have primarily focused on Western leaders, leaving a gap in understanding how Southeast Asian leaders employ English pragmatically in peace diplomacy. This study examines the pragmatic functions of persuasion and solidarity through speech acts in President Prabowo Subianto’s 2025 address to the United Nations General Assembly. Grounded in Searle’s speech act theory and informed by pragmatic frameworks of persuasion and solidarity (van Dijk, 1997; Chilton & Schäffner, 2002), this research explores how linguistic actions embody Indonesia’s peace-oriented stance and humanitarian values. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, both the transcript and audiovisual data of the speech were analyzed to identify directive, commissive, and expressive acts that perform persuasive and solidarity functions. The findings reveal that President Prabowo’s address integrates assertive appeals with empathy, repetition of peace-oriented imperatives, and inclusive pronouns that foster shared moral responsibility across audiences. These strategies demonstrate how English operates as an instrument of intercultural diplomacy and ethical communication, articulating Indonesia’s moral voice in global affairs. The study contributes to pragmatic research on peace discourse by broadening the understanding of how non-Western leaders use language to balance persuasion, empathy, and cooperation through ethical and intercultural pragmatics. Keywords: speech acts, persuasion, solidarity, peace diplomacy, pragmatic ethics

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and optimize the implementation of the Venus Information System in supporting crew change management within the Crewing Division of PT Pertamina International Shipping. The crew change process is a critical component of maritime operations that requires accurate data management, effective coordination, and continuous administrative control. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing data collection techniques including direct observation, in-depth interviews with relevant personnel, documentation studies, and supporting questionnaires. The findings indicate that the Venus Information System plays a significant role in enhancing the effectiveness of crew management, particularly in managing seafarer data, scheduling sign on and sign off activities, and monitoring certificate validity. However, the system has not been fully optimized due to technical constraints, limited communication networks onboard vessels, and insufficient user understanding among some crew members. Therefore, optimizing the Venus Information System requires improved user training, strengthened coordination between onboard crew and office staff, and consistent utilization of system features. This study is expected to contribute practical insights for shipping companies in improving efficiency and accuracy in information system–based crew change management.

Abstract

This study examines Bruce Wayne’s psychological dynamics in The Batman (2022) using Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, with a focus on the ego’s role in mediating trauma and moral conflict. This study analyzes how Wayne’s unresolved childhood trauma and dual identity as a vigilante reflect the interplay between the id, ego, and superego. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, this study analyzes purposively selected scenes and dialogues from The Batman using close textual analysis. Audience reception data further support the interpretation of Wayne’s character as a psychologically complex figure. The findings reveal that Wayne’s ego adapts to internal and external pressures through ethical compromises, illustrating Freud’s theory of ego functioning. This study contributes to contemporary literary and film criticism by offering a psychoanalytic perspective on trauma and identity in modern superhero narratives.
