Abstract

Indonesia has abundant forest resources, reaching 120 million hectares of forest area. However, the forestry sector's contribution to the national economy continues to decline. The low performance of the forestry sector cannot be separated from the limited availability of round-wood materials for its processing industries and insufficient development of the multi-businesses activities among the forestry companies. Therefore, increasing the forestry sector's productivity is necessary through raising investment. This study investigates the impacts of investment in the forestry sector on Indonesian economic performance, including output, income, employment, and import, using the Input-Output (I-O) Model. The results show that investment in the forestry sector will increase output, income, and labour in the forestry sector and its related sectors. However, with the increase in its output, the demand for inputs, including round-wood materials, will also increase, encouraging a rise in imports. Thus, an increase in investment in the forestry sector needs to be balanced with the availability of roundwood materials and other associated inputs in Indonesia. For the follow-up research, it is important to separate the investment into upstream and downstream activities along the forestry value chain and include a regional aspect in the analysis.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the income potential of oil palm farmers in financing higher education at Jambi University, addressing the rising educational costs that burden farmer families. Using a descriptive quantitative method, data were collected through questionnaires from 30 oil palm farmers meeting specific criteria. The analysis employed descriptive statistics to examine income and expenditure patterns. Results showed that the average household income was IDR 6,838,083.33, with expenditures of IDR 2,695,366.63. The income generated from oil palm farming alone has the potential to exceed educational funding needs, with a potential income ratio (PP) of 1.09 for oil palm farming and 1.67 when combined with other sources. While most farmers demonstrate strong income potential, some with lower incomes require additional support. The combined income from oil palm and non-oil palm activities offers a better opportunity for financing education. Relying solely on oil palm income could limit financial stability. This research contributes insights into how farmers' income levels relate to their capacity to fund education and suggests policy recommendations to enhance access to higher education for farmers' children, fostering social and economic development in the area

Abstract

Research Originality: The novelty lies in exploring an under-researched topic, with limited studies on the impact of coffee exports from 1993 to 2024, considering key events such as the Asian financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic. Research Objectives:  This study examines the short-term and long-term effects of exchange rates and coffee exports on economic growth. Research Methods: This study utilizes data from 1993 to 2024 on exchange rates, coffee exports, recessions, and economic growth in Indonesia. The analysis is conducted using the ARDL model. Empirical Results: Exchange rate depreciation has a negative impact on GDP in the short term, while past depreciation has a positive effect on economic growth. The value of coffee exports has a marginal positive effect on GDP, while the volume of coffee exports shows inconsistent impacts. Recession does not significantly affect GDP, likely due to policy responses. Long-term estimates show a stable relationship among the variables, with adjustments occurring at a rate of 35.43% per period. Implications: The government should thoroughly evaluate existing policies with a focus on promoting economic growth, while enhancing the quality of Indonesian coffee exports to remain competitive globally.
