Abstract

Kombucha is a fermented beverage produced by a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY) and has gained increasing attention as a functional food due to its bioactive compounds. This literature review aims to evaluate the pharmacological activities of kombucha and its potential development as a functional food with economic value. A systematic literature review was conducted using reputable international databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and ScienceDirect, covering publications from 2015 to 2025. The findings indicate that kombucha consistently exhibits antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, anticancer, and cosmetic-related bioactivities. These effects are influenced by substrate type, fermentation conditions, and microbial composition, which determine the production of organic acids, polyphenols, flavonoids, and postbiotic metabolites. Beyond its health benefits, kombucha contributes significantly to economic development through product diversification, utilization of local resources and agro-industrial by-products, and entrepreneurial opportunities for small and medium enterprises. Nevertheless, challenges related to quality standardization, food safety, and health claim regulations remain critical issues. Overall, kombucha demonstrates strong potential as a functional food and an economically valuable fermented biotechnology product.

Abstract

Background: Bananas are among the most important horticultural commodities in Indonesia. In West Java, Purwakarta is a center of banana production. Farmers rely on traditional propagation and production methods, resulting in low yields and productivity. The main problem for banana farmers is the lack of seed availability, where almost no farmer used seed from tissue culture and only 10% of the respondent did not know about post-harvest processing technology.Aims: The aim of this activity is to improve the skills of farmers in the propagation of banana plants by in vitro culture, banana production, and post-harvest technology. This activity took place in Wanasari, Purwakarta City.Methods: The methodology for these activities was to deliver lectures and conduct practice sessions with farmers on banana propagation, production, and postharvest technology. Additionally, we provided them with a banana plant from in vitro culture.Result: The community service activity showed that the farmers were highly interested and enthusiastic about the technology introduced to them with increasing the post-test score of those audiences. The participants' enthusiasm and confidence in implementing banana cultivation and post-harvest techniques demonstrate the effectiveness and practicality of the training methods in supporting banana cultivation. This work is expected to empower farmers to manage their gardens and post-harvest banana handling, thereby contributing to economic resilience and food security.

Abstract

Kombucha is a fermented tea-based beverage containing various bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, flavonoids, organic acids (acetic, gluconic, and glucuronic acids), and probiotic microorganisms produced by the Symbiotic Culture of Bacteria and Yeast (SCOBY). These compounds exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory activities that may support immune function. This study aimed to analyze the pharmacological and pharmacoeconomic aspects of kombucha as a functional immunomodulatory food for elementary-level children with special needs through a systematic literature review approach. Data were collected from Scopus-indexed journals and other reputable scientific databases published between 2016 and 2025. The findings indicate that kombucha exerts pharmacological effects by modulating pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines, enhancing antioxidant activity, and improving gut microbiota balance, thereby contributing to immune homeostasis. From a pharmacoeconomic perspective, kombucha shows potential as a cost-effective preventive functional food intervention with relatively low production costs and potential long-term healthcare cost efficiency. However, direct clinical evidence in children with special needs remains limited, highlighting the need for further experimental and clinical studies to establish safety, efficacy, and comprehensive cost-benefit evaluation.

Abstract

Kegiatan program pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan mengoptimalkan lahan pekarangan warga Desa Pasigaran dengan menanam tanaman alpukat sebagai tanaman bernilai ekonomi.  Potensi wilayah dengan kondisi geografis berbukit, tanah subur  dan berada pada ketinggian 979 meter di atas permukaan laut sangat mendukung pengembangan komoditas hortikultura terutama alpukat. Waktu kegiatan dari bulan Juni sampai dengan Agustus 2024 diikuti oleh kelompok ibu-ibu PKK (pembinaan kesejahteraan keluarga). Tahapan kegiatan program ini diantaranya survei lokasi dan kondisi masyarakat, penyuluhan, pendampingan, serta evaluasi. Manfaat kegiatan ini yaitu masyarakat memperoleh pengetahuan praktis tentang teknik budidaya alpukat sekaligus termotivasi mengoptimalkan lahan pekarangannya. Hasil kegiatan ini diantaranya kesukaan warga terhadap buah alpukat meningkat 10%, minat warga menanam alpukat meningkat 20%, tingkat pengetahuan warga mengenai manfaat buah alpukat dan ragam varietas tanaman alpukat meningkat berturut-turut 50% dan 60%. Selain itu penyuluhan yang dilakukan berhasil meningkatkan pengetahuan masyarakat mengenai teknik budidaya alpukat, mulai dari pemilihan bibit unggul, cara menanam dan pemeliharaan tanaman. Hasil kegiatan penerapan teknik budidaya alpukat menjadikan pengalaman warga dalam menanam alpukat meningkat sebanyak 80%. Perhitungan persentase ini didasarkan pada hasil pengisian kuesioner oleh peserta sebelum dan sesudah kegiatan dilakukan.

Abstract

Konsumsi buah-buahan sangat dianjurkan untuk peningkatan gizi masyarakat dan ketahanan tubuh. Namun demikian kemampuan untuk membeli buah-buahan masih terbatas karena pada umumnya masyarakat lebih mementingkan untuk membeli kebutuhan pokok. Ditengah masa endemi ini, diperlukan daya tahan tubuh yang tinggi agar tidak sakit, salah satunya melalui asupan buah dengan kandungan vitamin C yang tinggi. Melalui penanaman jambu kristal dan dipelihara dengan baik di pekarangan rumah masyarakat, diharapkan dapat memenuhi kebutuhan gizi (khususnya vitamin C) secara mandiri tanpa membeli. Dipilihnya Kampung Empel, Desa Mekar Jaya, Kecamatan Banjaran, Kabupaten Bandung karena merupakan daerah yang cocok untuk ditanami jambu kristal dan masyarakatnya mempunyai pekarangan yang luas. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PKM) ini adalah penjajagan, penyuluhan, pendampingan dan evaluasi. Materi yang diberikan saat penyuluhan adalah pemeliharaan tanaman jambu kristal dan manfaatnya untuk kesehatan. Kegiatan yang dilakukan adalah persiapan bibit jambu kristal, penanaman jambu kristal di halaman dan pemeliharaan jambu kristal. Hasil dari kegiatan ini adalah masyarakat lebih mengenal pemeliharaan jambu kristal dan manfaat buah jambu kristal  serta peningkatan minat masyarakat untuk meningkatkan gizi dan daya tahan tubuh melalui konsumsi jambu kristal, mengingat masa pandemi covid saat itu. Kegiatan penyuluhan ini berdampak positif terhadap prospek dan minat untuk menanam jambu kristal di pekarangan rumah.

Abstract

Groundcherry (Physalis angulata L.) is a plant with many medicinal potentials due to its rich secondary metabolites such as phenolic and flavonoid. However, conventional agriculture practices are still limited, especially in Indonesia. This study was divided into two stages. The first stage was conducted to determine optimal 6-BAP and 2,4-D combination for callus induction, while the second stage was conducted to determine callus phenolic, flavonoid, and antioxidant response to salinity stress. The first stage was arranged in factorial completely randomized design with two factors: 6-BAP (0, 2, and 4 mg/L) and 2,4-D (0, 0.5, 1, and 1.5 mg/L). The second stage was arranged in simple completely randomized design with different NaCl concentration (0, 25, 50, 75, 100 mM) as treatments. The results showed significant interaction (p < 0.05) between 6-BAP and 2,4-D on callus induction. Combination of 2 mg/L 6-BAP and 1 mg/L 2,4-D showed the highest callus formation percentage (46% increase), callus size (60.12% increase), and fresh weight (179.69% increase), and greener compact callus. Application of NaCl as salinity stress at second stage experiment served as an elicitor to enhance callus antioxidant capacity. Salinity level at 100 mM NaCl showed the most accumulation of phenolic content (17.8% increase), flavonoid content (25.17% increase), and antioxidant activities (6.84% IC50 decrease). This study demonstrates plant growth regulator optimization with salinity stress elicitation integration as an effective strategy to enhance antioxidant production in P. angulata callus, providing a practical approach for controlled secondary metabolite production.
