Abstract

Sun irradiation levels and associated temperature changes are the main factors that influence the conversion of solar energy into electricity. Most energy is produced during a hot sunny day as the sun irradiation is at the maximum level and uniform throughout the solar photovoltaic (PV). However, most solar PV were frequently get shadowed, completely or partially, by the neighbouring buildings, trees and passing clouds. Consequently, the solar PV has lower voltage and current output; hence, multiple maximum power points (MPP) are existed on the PV curve, which could cause confusion to the conventional Maximum Power Point Tracker (MPPT) to track the true MPP for the PV system. Thus, it is important to examine the impacts of partial shading on the solar PV in order to extract the maximum possible power. This paper presents a MATLAB-based modelling for simulation and experimental setup to study the I-V and P-V characteristics of a solar module under a non-uniform irradiation due to partial shading condition (PSC).  Furthermore, this study is also proposed an effective method (a variable step size of P&O with checking algorithm) that is low cost and higher tracking efficiency. Thus, this study is essential in improving and evaluating any new MPPT algorithm under the PSC.

Abstract

In forensic anthropology, age estimation is used to ease the process of identifying the age of a living being or the body of a deceased person. Nonetheless, the specialty of the estimation models is solely suitable to a specific people. Commonly, the models are inter and intra-observer variability as the qualitative set of data is being used which results the estimation of age to rely on forensic experts. This study proposes an age estimation model by using length of bone in left hand of Asian subjects range from newborn up to 18-year-old. One soft computing model, which is Random Forest (RF) is used to develop the estimation model and the results are compared with Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM), developed in the previous case studies. The performance measurement used in this study and the previous case study are R-square and Mean Square Error (MSE) value. Based on the results produced, the RF model shows comparable results with the ANN and SVM model. For male subjects, the performance of the RF model is better than ANN, however less ideal than SVM model. As for female subjects, the RF model overperfoms both ANN and SVM model. Overall, the RF model is the most suitable model in estimating age for female subjects compared to ANN and SVM model, however for male subjects, RF model is the second best model compared to the both models. Yet, the application of this model is restricted only to experimental purpose or forensic practice.

Abstract

Two quasi-Z-source DC-DC converters (q-ZSCs) with buck-boost converter gain were recently proposed. The converters have advantages of continuous gain curve, higher gain magnitude and buck-boost operation at efficient duty ratio range when compared with existing q-ZSCs. Accurate dynamic models of these converters are needed for global and detailed overview by understanding their operation limits and effects of components sizes. A dynamic model of one of these converters is proposed here by first deriving the gain equation, state equations and state space model. A generalized small signal model was also derived before localizing it to this topology. The transfer functions (TF) were all derived, the poles and zeros analyzed with the boundaries for stable operations presented and discussed. Some of the findings include existence of right-hand plane (RHP) zero in the duty ratio to output capacitor voltage TF. This is common to the Z-source and quasi-Z-source topologies and implies control limitations. Parasitic resistances of the capacitors and inductors affect the nature and positions of the poles and zeros. It was also found and verified that rather than symmetric components, use of carefully selected smaller asymmetric components L1 and C1 produces less parasitic voltage drop, higher output voltage and current under the same conditions, thus better efficiency and performance at reduced cost, size and weight.

Abstract

Over the past few years, due to the shortage of fossil fuels and their unwanted environmental impacts, the use of renewable energy has vastly increased. Among them is wind power, which has been at the center of attention as one of the most important renewable energies. Many studies have been conducted regarding wind farms with variable speeds. Among these, the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) has been of utmost importance due to its capability of separately controlling the active and reactive power, reducing the nominal converter capacity, maintaining constant variable speed frequency, and improving quality. The goal of this study is to control the synchronizing and network connection to the DFIG such that when connected to the network, no pulse is seen in the torque, rotor current, or stator. The method used in this study is known as virtual torque, which is derived from direct torque control, but instead of an electromagnetic torque, we use a virtual one. To implement this method, it is only required to measure the network voltage, current, and rotor position, and changing the control algorithm from synchronizing to grid connection only includes some changes in the flux references and torque, and calculating the electromagnetic torque instead of the virtual one.

Abstract

In this research, we create a single-phase to ground synthetic fault by the simulation of a three-phase cable system and identify the location using mathematical techniques of Fourier and modal transforms. Current and voltage signals are measured and analyzed for fault location by the reflection of the waves between the measured point and the fault location. By simulating the network and line modeling using alternative transient programs (ATP) and MATLAB software, two single-phase to ground faults are generated at different points of the line at times of 0.3 and 0.305 s. First, the fault waveforms are displayed in the ATP software, and then this waveform is transmitted to MATLAB and presented along with its phasor view over time. In addition to the waveforms, the detection and fault location indicators are presented in different states of fault. Fault resistances of 1, 100, and 1,000 ohms are considered for fault creation and modeling with low arch strength. The results show that the proposed method has an average fault of less than 0.25% to determine the fault location, which is perfectly correct. It is varied due to changing the conditions of time, resistance, location, and type of error but does not exceed the above value.

Abstract

In this article, a planar monopole two-element multiple input multiple output (MIMO) array has been designed and characterized with the intention of ultra-wideband (UWB) applications. The array has a voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) working bandwidth (BW) of 13.258 GHz between 3.394-16.652 GHz, with a fractional BW (FBW) of 132.28% with respect to a center frequency of 10.023 GHz. The two elements of the MIMO array are 900 polarizations mismatched for better isolation. Consequently, less than 20 dB of isolation has been achieved throughout the entire BW. Also observed was a good combined realized peak gain of up to 5.85 dBi and total efficiency of greater than 85%. For MIMO performance key parameters, the array exhibits the envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) <0.0033, diversity gain (DG) >9.983, total active reflection coefficient (TARC) <0.445, mean effective gain difference (MEG12) ≈0 dB, and the channel capacity loss (CCL) <0.4 bps/Hz. This design would encourage designers to create high-performance MIMO antennas for UWB frequency-related applications.

Abstract

In this study, a low-cost quadrature triangle oscillator using a voltage-controlled closed-loop dual operational amplifier (Op-Amp) architecture is proposed. Unlike other typical designs, this oscillator does not require any passive components. The use of an Op-Amp-based circuit is attractive for a triangle oscillator because it is more cost-effective than a microcontroller-based solution. This is especially true for sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) DC-AC power conversion applications. The slew-rate restriction of an Op-Amp is a useful characteristic for producing a triangle waveform when seen from the perspective of wave shaping techniques. The MC4558 and the JRC4558D are two examples of dual Op-Amps that are evaluated, contrasted, and described in this article. At supply voltages of +7 V and -7 V, the suggested quadrature triangle oscillator that uses Op-Amps MC4558 and JRC4558D has the same oscillation frequency, which is 63 kHz, as demonstrated by simulation and experimental data. The frequency stability is estimated to be around 0.23%. In addition, the findings from the experiment demonstrate that the proposed oscillator is a practical solution for the SPWM DC-AC power conversion application.

Abstract

Direct torque control (DTC) using dual-inverter technique is one of the best topologies for electric vehicle (EV) as it offers abundant selection of voltage vectors to drive the induction machine (IM). This dual-inverter technique also more reassuring as the system still workable even any of its voltage supply is disrupted or the power pack is drained. However, during the uneven voltage supply, the movement of voltage vectors is interrupted and will move obliquely especially in medium voltage vectors. This situation will lead to the faulty movement of the voltage vectors in the default sector definitions and lead to huge flux droop, which later could impose to distort phase current. This paper proposes an optimal sector definition based on the preset voltage ratio between the two inverters. The voltage vectors can be mapped tangentially to the flux vector, minimizing the flux droop and improving the phase current waveform when the proposed sector is utilized. The effectiveness of the proposed sector is tested using MATLAB/Simulink software and the exact parameter from the induction machine.

Abstract

Single-ended primary-inductor converter (SEPIC) was considered a good alternative to a DC-DC converter for photovoltaic (PV) systems. The SEPIC converter can operate with an input voltage greater or less than the regulated output voltage, or as a step-up or step-down. As a step-up converter, SEPIC boosts PV voltage to specific levels. However, gain limitation and voltage stress continue to reduce the efficiency of conventional SEPIC converters. Because of this, researchers created a modified SEPIC converter to improve performance. In this paper, six modified SEPIC converters were compared and evaluated. To compare fairly, all modified SEPIC converters are non-isolated and use a single switch. Power simulator (PSIM) software was used to simulate each converter with a BISOL BMO-250 PV module and maximum power point tracking (MPPT) P&O controller. The converter with the highest static voltage gain and lowest duty cycle has been identified. It results in up to ten times voltage increment with a 0.8-duty ratio. All topologies have the same voltage stress, with maximum and minimum values of 30.1 and 29.5 V, respectively. On the other hand, each topology produces different average efficiencies, with the highest and lowest efficiency at 99.5% and 97.2%, respectively.

Abstract

In this study, a novel neuro-fuzzy clustering algorithm is proposed based on spiking neural network and ink drop spread (IDS) concepts. The proposed structure is a one-layer artificial neural network with leaky integrate and fire (LIF) neurons. The structure implements the IDS algorithm as a fuzzy concept. Each training data will result in firing the corresponding input neuron and its neighboring neurons. A synchronous time coding algorithm is used to manage input and output neurons firing time. For an input data, one or several output neurons of the network will fire; confidence degree of the network to outputs is defined as the relative delay of the firing times with respect to the synchronous pulse. A memristor crossbar-based hardware is utilized for hardware implementation of the proposed algorithm. The simulation result corroborates that the proposed algorithm can be used as a neuro-fuzzy clustering and vector quantization algorithm.
