Abstract

Retirement among Indonesian Navy personnel often creates a sharp decline in income while financial needs persist, underscoring the urgency to identify determinants of post-service welfare. This study aims to examine how education, training, occupation, age, and rank shape income and welfare among Navy retirees. Drawing on human capital and empowerment theory, it employs a quantitative explanatory design with purposive sampling of 202 respondents in East Java. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed with Partial Least Squares–SEM via SmartPLS 4.1.0.0, complemented by multiple regression analysis. Results indicate that education has the strongest effect on welfare, training enhances income, and rank significantly predicts income disparities, while post-service occupation contributes positively to welfare. However, the model explains welfare and income only moderately, implying the role of other structural and social factors. These findings highlight the importance of comprehensive empowerment strategies that combine individual capacity building with institutional support.

Abstract

Introduction: The Prosthetic Orthotics (PO) School at Health Polytechnic Jakarta I relies on practical skills and various materials in its labs/workshops for device fabrication. To enhance logistics management, this study proposes a new digital application leveraging digital technology's efficiency. The aim is to improve the organization of logistics at the PO school, given the diversity and volume of practicum materials. The study involves developing and evaluating the effectiveness of the new digital application. Method: Using a mixed methods approach, the study employed a focus group discussion (FGD) to gather insights from managerial-level participants and student users. FGD participants discussed the expected design, features, and functions of the new digital management system, as they are actively involved in logistic management. The study also evaluated the new system by comparing it with the old manual system. Results and Conclusion: Participants expressed expectations for a digital application with user-friendly features, easy gadget access, access authorization, automation of stock tracking, and a warning system for stock shortages. The developed digital management system aligned with these expectations and demonstrated superior effectiveness when compared to the manual system in managing a diverse range of practicum materials at the PO School of Health Polytechnic Jakarta I. Time constraints during the COVID-19 lockdown limited the elaboration of additional key features, suggesting a need for future studies to explore other aspects based on the school's evolving needs.

Abstract

The North Natuna Sea, which is located in Indonesia's Exclusive Economic Zone, is increasingly vulnerable to various maritime threats such as illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU fishing), piracy, and territorial violations by foreign vessels, especially in the context of increasing geopolitical tensions in the South China Sea region. Conventional marine surveillance systems have proven inadequate in providing early warning or proactive prevention due to their limited range and reactive nature. This study aims to explore the potential use of artificial intelligence (AI) in strengthening Indonesia's maritime security system through predictive detection models. Based on a review of the growing literature on the application of AI in ocean monitoring and maritime risk management, this study examines how machine learning techniques have revolutionized marine operations in developed countries through data-driven navigation and intelligent surveillance. Methods: This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with case studies in the Natuna region, and was based on literature studies as well as secondary data such as Automatic Identification System (AIS) recordings, satellite imagery, and open-source maritime incident reports. Results: The results of the analysis show that a combination of algorithms such as Random Forest, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) can form a hybrid detection model that is able to recognize suspicious vessel behavior, predict risk zones, and provide early warning of IUU fishing activities. The study also highlights the importance of integrating AIS data, satellite imagery, and marine sensors to improve spatial awareness and response precision. Conclusion: AI-based maritime security provides a strategic opportunity for Indonesia to move from a reactive defense system to a predictive and anticipatory approach. Novelty of this article: The novelty in this study lies in the integration of the concepts of predictive security and preventive defense in the design of AI models that are specific to vulnerable areas such as the North Natuna Sea—an approach that has never been operationalized in real terms in the context of Indonesia's maritime security.

Abstract

This study examines the strategic role of naval power in World War II by comparing the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. The main issue addressed is how maritime dominance influenced the course and outcome of the war, and how naval strategies adapted to geographic and enemy-specific challenges. The research aims to analyze the impact of sea power, the strategic advantages of maritime dominance in logistics and offensives, and to compare the strategic approaches of both theaters. A comparative historical study with a qualitative-analytical approach was employed, based on literature reviews and document analysis. The findings indicate that naval power was crucial for sustaining supply lines and executing military offensives, with a defensive convoy strategy in the Atlantic and an offensive island hopping strategy in the Pacific. These contrasting approaches reflect military flexibility in adapting to terrain and enemy forces. This study confirms that maritime dominance not only shaped tactical victory but also laid the foundation for the postwar global geopolitical order.
