Abstract

Malaria is one of the disease which spreads through the bite of female Anopheles mosquito caused by Plasmodium parasite. Malaria can be treated with antimalarial drugs such as chloroquine and artemisin, but in some malaria-endemic areas, parasitic resistance to chloroquine has been reported so that malaria eradication becomes increasingly difficult. The occurrence of such resistance causes the need for new antimalarial findings. Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) has many secondary metabolites, such as alkaloids, terpenoids, and flavonoids which have antiplasmodial activity. The aim of this research is to determine the effectivity of the ethanol extract of eggplant peels as an antimalarial to basophil in mice induced by Plasmodium berghei. Eggplant peel was extracted by maceration method using 70% ethanol. The analysis of secondary metabolites from the ethanol extract of eggplant peels used tube test and thin layer chromatography. The level of parasitemia and the number of basophil were calculated from blood smear of mice (Mus musculus) which were treated with extracts at a dose of 0.075 mg/20 g of body weight; 0.15 mg/20 of body weight; and 0.3 mg/20 g of body weight. 3.744 mg/20 g of body weight DHP was used as positive control and aquades was used as negative control. Research result show that ethanol extract of the eggplant peels contains groups of alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, steroids, phenolic and saponins. 0.075 mg/20 g body weight of ethanol extract of the eggplant peels effectively reduces parasitemia. Ethanol extract of the eggplant peels in all dose groups did not have an effect on basophils. The conclusion of this research is ethanol extract of the eggplant peels has antimalarial activity and does not increase the number of basophils.

Abstract

The world population experiencing dermatophytosis has reached 20%. Dermatophytosis is an infection caused by dermatophyte fungi. The prevalence in Asia reaches 35.6%. One of the fungi that causes dermatophytosis is Microsporum canis. Microsporum canis is known to be resistant to antifungal drugs. Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a plant originating from Southeast Asia and in Indonesia it is often found in the Kapuas Hulu area, West Kalimantan. Kratom leaves are widely used as herbal medicine and have secondary metabolite compounds that have the potential to be used as antifungals. This study aims to determine the antifungal activity of ethanol extract of kratom leaves (Mitragyna speciosa) on the growth of Microsporum canis. Phytochemical screening was carried out using the Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) scanner method and spray testing to determine the secondary metabolite compounds of the extract being tested. The test extract was made in concentrations of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 90% (w/v) with ethanol as a solvent. 8 µg itraconazole discs were used as a positive control and 10% DMSO was used as a negative control. Antifungal activity testing was carried out using the disc diffusion method by measuring the fungal growth inhibition zone. The ethanol extract of kratom leaves contains secondary metabolite compounds, namely alkaloids, terpenoids, steroids, flavonoids and tannins with the most dominant groups of alkaloid and tannin compounds. The results showed that there was no growth inhibition zone for Microsporum canis at all extract concentrations tested. The ethanol extract of kratom leaves does not have antifungal activity against the growth of Microsporum canis.

Abstract

One of the plants that can be used as a natural dye is senggani fruit. This study aimed to determine the effect of acid pH on the anthocyanin levels of the senggani fruit extract. The method used in this study uses UV-Vis Spectrophotometry. The sample was senggani fruit extract, added with an acidic pH solution (1-6) with 3 repetitions for 18 samples. Based on the results of research that has been carried out, the average anthocyanin levels at pH 1 are 2.00% with a bright red color; pH 2 is 1.63% with a red-orange color, pH 3 is 1.45% with an orange color, pH 4 is 2.05 % with brownish red color, pH 5 is 1.38% with brownish orange color, and pH 6 is 1.11% with light brown color. Based on statistical tests using Simple Linear Regression, Ha was accepted so that it could be concluded that there was an effect of acid pH on the anthocyanin levels of the senggani fruit. Based on a study that has been done, it is known that the sourer the pH solution is, the taller the anthocyanin obtained. Matter happens Because absorbance is comparable with the rate of anthocyanin something sample.
