Abstract

Mobile phone is a recent technology in teaching English. Mobile phone provides simple and easy way in developing teaching and learning activities, therefore, the researcher was interested in finding the data information about the role of mobile phone for English language teaching. The utilization of mobile phone offers valuable opportunities for creating an effective teaching strategy. The students' perspectives are crucial for getting their views of role of mobile phone in language teaching. This case study was to find out the students' perspectives of mobile phone role in English language teaching. A qualitative design was employed for the purpose of getting the data. Mainly semi structure interview was used as the research instruments. The result of her research finding showed that most students were having good response towards the usage of mobile phones in language learning but some findings shown that the problems were also occurred at the same moment of using it. These research findings were contributed the next research for more deeply dig for language learning.

Abstract

The aim of the research was to find out teaching and learning activities at SMA Negeri 12 in implementing 2013 curriculum. This research was based on the preliminary studies in some Junior and Senior High Schools around Pekanbaru by observing and interviewing the English teacher in excuting 2013 curriculum. The design of this Research was qualitative.The researcher used observation sheet and interview to find out the activities in SMA Negeri 12. Based on the research findings, first, the stage of teaching and learning process in the classroom, the teacher could not implement the step ideally, second, the professional curriculum from the government did not provide the available training to support teaching and learning in the classroom and the last the availability of resources and media were not supported yet. By conducting this research, the researcher hoped that the government conducting the appropriate training to all English teachers in implementing 2013 curriculum.

Abstract

Blangkon is a product of local wisdom that has high heritage value as a part of a Javanese traditional costume since the kingdom period of Surakarta. To increase durability and sustainability the blangkon home industries have to adapt to trend development. The research aims to build a model of tourism village based on local wisdom. The method of phenomenology observation was applied to find aspects that have a good opportunity to be integrated directly and indirectly with the product and production of blangkon. The fusion of those two aspects became a part of tourism activities in Surakarta and The Province of Central Java. The result of research leads to some important conclusions. The product and production of blangkon have to be integrated harmoniously with some other aspects and activities especially those based on local wisdom in order to build and to save the blangkon becoming an important heritage matter and commodity. Finally, the model of tourism village based on local wisdom has to be built by involving the local community to guarantee they are going to get a better life in the future. It has three main parts, namely components, management and sustainability of the model.

Abstract

Improving Students’ English Speaking Skills Through Demonstration Method of The class XI IPS 1 students  of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang. This study aims to improve the students’ speaking skills of class XI IPS 1 at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang by using the demonstration method. The subject of this research is all the students of class XI IPS1 of SMA Muhammadiyah Palembang consisting of 32 students. This study used descriptive qualitative and quantitative methods in which the data contained in this study are numbers, percentages and depictions used to determine the success or failure of a study. The research instrument was in the form of daily tests and interview. The data obtained from the instrument that shows students who reached the KKM on: (1) Pre-test are 3 students (9.37%), (2) the result of  Cycle I is 7 students (21.87%), (3) the result of cycle II is 17 students ( 53.12%), and (4) the result of Cycle III is 25 students (78.12%). From the data can be concluded that the application of the demonstration method can improve students’ speaking skills of class XI IPS 1 studens of  SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Palembang.

Abstract

The aim of the study to find out whether or not it is effective to use one act drama in improving speaking ability to the eighth grade students of junior high school 44 of Palembang. The method used in this study was experimental method. The population of the study was all the eighth grade  students of junior high school 44 of Palembang consisted of 290 students. The number of sample was 74 students taken by using purposive sampling and divided into two groups namely, control and experimental. The data of test was analyzed by using t-test. The result of the study indicated that the mean of posttest in the experimental group was 69.86, and the mean of posttest in the control group was 68.33. t-obtained was 2.052 at the significance level of p> 0.05 (5%) in 2-tailed testing and degree if freedom (df) was 72, and critical value of t-table was 1.990. Since the value of t-obtained was higher than the critical value of t-table, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It means that improving students’ speaking ability through one act drama was effective.

Abstract

World Tourism Organization(WTO), is one of theglobalissueson the international scene, becauseof theimpactof tourism activitieson the developmentand improvement ofthe economic, social, culturaland environmental qualityto the green-tourism. It is based with theSurakarta- city astourismandculturalcity towards the eco-city culture. The aim of the research, will focus on urban tourism andbuildformulationdevelopment through low impact development, in the realization ofgreen-tourism. It is based on explorative descriptive method combined with the mapping spatial of potential physical character (layout, building, and environment), included cultural, social and economic effects of tourism. The location of the research is Kauman urban settlement having a valuable unique and local potential and also its activities which are still exist right now.The result of the research, shows that the existence layout and environment of Kauman urban settlement has not been handled optimally. Moreover, it tends to lose its characteristics because it isn’t protected. Therefore,  structuringa tourist areathat emphasizes theuse ofnaturalandculturalresourceswisely byprioritizingcontinued existenceandlocal knowledgetominimize thenegativeimpacts oftourismon the environment. The concept isconceivedforallparties concernedagreedthattheapplication does notgive rise tocontradictionsbetweenthe variousinterests, useful asa guideto applysustainabledevelopment of urban tourism ispaying attention tothe environmentandlocalcommunities. Abstract

Vocabulary is the first step that must be memorize by learner in speaking English as a foreign language. There are two kinds of vocabulary learning strategies which are breadth vocabulary (recognition) and depth vocabulary (recall).  In enhancing L2 vocabulary knowledge students need the awareness of learning strategies used. The active students use learning strategies can increase language skills, self confidence and learning motivation in learning activity process. Learning strategies instruct students to learn independently, responsibly, and actively. Thus, students tend to be more confident and motivated when applied learning strategies in the daily learning process. Besides, teacher ought to teach and motivate students to apply students’ some learning strategies accordingly. Finally after implementing learning strategies, students and teachers need to evaluate the progress students’ vocabulary regularly.

Abstract

The objective of  this research was to find out whether or not it is effective to teach reading comprehension through direct method to the eighth grade students of the State Junior High School 44 of Palembang. This study used a quasi -experimental method where the way of this method compare of two groups namely the experimental group and control group. The differences between them were in experimental group given treatment by using direct method; meanwhile in the control group was not given treatment. The population of this study was all  the eighth grade students of the State Junior High School 44 of Palembang. There were nine classes or 332 students, and two classes or 74 students were taken as the sample of the study by using  purposive non random sampling. In collecting the data, the researcher gave the test. The number of questions are 20 items.  The test was given twice namely, pretest and posttest. The items of the test in the post-test were exactly the same as those in the pre-test. It was calculated by using SPSS 16.0.  From the result of the research, It  indicated that  the students’ average score of the post-test in experimental group was 80.81 and the students’ average score of post-test in control group was 72.84. The result of statistical analysis between experimental group and control group t-obtained should be higher than t-table (0.279). Furthermore the result of the students’ score in experimental group and control group (value t-obtained) were 4.462. Since the value of t-obtained was higher than t-table, so that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. It can be concluded that teaching reading comprehension through direct method to the eighth grade students of the State Junior High School  44 of Palembang was  effective.

Abstract

Sustainable City Development can be achieved with the active role of actors in development activities, one of which is the role of the community. This study aims to identify the role of the urban Kampung community in the sustainable development of Kampung Kota. The research location is in the city of Surakarta with a sample of Kampung Gendingan RW 15, Kelurahan Jebres, Kecamatan (district) Jebres. The study used qualitative methods, through observation, interviews and discussion groups with swot analysis. The results showed that the role of the community in the development of the urban village can be applied to the participation of concept formulation, design and management. The three roles of the urban village community will be able to form a unique and sustainable village model.

Abstract

The title of this study is The Importance of English Club: A Case at English Education Study Program Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang. The objective of this study was to know the importance of English club to improve students’ English ability. This research was regarded on a qualitative study. The researcher used questionnaire to collecting the data and used the percentage analysis to analyze the data. The population of this study was the entire students of English education study program Universitas Muhammadiyah Palembang. Then 47 students from the fourth semester students were taken as the sample by using convenience sampling. The questionnaire consisted of 20 items. The result of this study was dominantly students who chose agree. Students think that English club can be useful to improve their English ability, especially in speaking skills. After joining the English club,the students are able to organize their ideas for speaking, more comfortable in speaking English, putting less effort to understand and willing to communicate in English.
