Abstract

Speaking confidence is an important affective factor in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning because students need confidence to answer questions, participate in group discussions, deliver presentations, and continue speaking even when they make mistakes. However, many EFL students experience social judgment in the classroom, including fear of negative evaluation, peer ridicule, classroom comparison, sensitivity to teacher correction, and self-consciousness. This study investigated the predictive effect of social judgment on EFL students’ speaking confidence at SMA Katolik Santa Maria Medan. The study employed a quantitative correlational design with simple linear regression. The participants were 36 senior high school students who learned English as a foreign language. Data were collected using two Likert-scale questionnaires: a Social Judgment Scale and a Speaking Confidence Scale, with scores ranging from 20 to 100. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson product-moment correlation, and simple linear regression. The findings showed that students’ social judgment was at a moderate-to-high level, with a mean score of 66.74 and a standard deviation of 8.34. Students’ speaking confidence was also at a moderate-to-high level, with a mean score of 72.33 and a standard deviation of 8.43. The Pearson correlation showed a strong negative relationship between social judgment and speaking confidence, r = -.801, p < .001. The regression analysis showed that social judgment significantly predicted speaking confidence, B = -0.81, t = -7.79, p < .001. The coefficient of determination showed that social judgment explained 64.1% of the variance in students’ speaking confidence. These findings indicate that students who experienced higher social judgment tended to have lower confidence in speaking English. The study concludes that reducing fear of negative evaluation, peer ridicule, classroom comparison, and excessive sensitivity to correction is important for strengthening students’ speaking confidence in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the outlining technique in improving students’ writing skill in descriptive texts among Grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 31 Medan in the 2025–2026 academic year. This study is motivated by students’ low writing skill in descriptive texts, particularly in developing ideas, organizing text structure coherently, and using appropriate vocabulary and grammar. This research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design using a pre-test and post-test control group design. The sample consisted of 60 Grade VIII students, divided into two groups: the experimental class (VIII-7) and the control class (VIII-8), each consisting of 30 students selected through purposive sampling. The experimental group was taught using the outlining technique, while the control group was taught using conventional teaching methods. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test assessments and analyzed using normality test, homogeneity test, independent samples t-test, and paired sample t-test. The results of the study indicate that there is a significant difference between the experimental and control groups based on the independent samples t-test result, with a t-value of 6.063 and a significance level of 0.000 < 0.05, leading to the rejection of H₀ and acceptance of Hₐ. Furthermore, the paired sample t-test results show that both groups experienced a significant improvement; however, the experimental group achieved a higher increase compared to the control group. The mean score of the experimental group increased from 69.33 to 88.33, while the control group increased from 62.33 to 77.17. Therefore, it can be concluded that the outlining technique is effective in improving students’ writing skill in descriptive texts.

Abstract

This study looked at how the Know-Want-Learned (KWL) approach affected the tenth grade students at SMA St. Yoseph Medan's reading comprehension of recount texts throughout the 2025–2026 school year. The study was carried out because many students continued to struggle with comprehending recount narratives, including recognizing key concepts, understanding specific details, organizing event sequences, and deciphering the text's meaning. Additionally, during the learning process, pupils demonstrated little enthusiasm and minimal participation. This study used a quantitative methodology and a quasi-experimental design, with 58 students split into two groups of 29 students each: an experimental class and a control class. Validity, reliability, normality, homogeneity, and Mann-Whitney U tests were used to assess the data, which were gathered using pre-test and post-test equipment. The reliability analysis revealed that the instrument was dependable with a Cronbach's Alpha score of 0.699, while the validity analysis demonstrated that every test item was legitimate. Additionally, there was a significant difference between pupils taught using the KWL strategy and those taught using traditional teaching methods, as indicated by the Mann-Whitney U test result of 0.001, which was less than 0.05. Additionally, the effect size computation showed a moderate influence with a Cohen's d value of 0.66. Consequently, the results indicated that the KWL approach had a favorable and noteworthy impact on students' comprehension of recount texts and may be employed as a successful teaching method for reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of Differentiated Instruction on the narrative text writing ability of grade XI students of SMA Budi Murni 2 in the 2025/2026 academic year. This study is motivated by the low ability of students in developing story ideas, organizing plots coherently, using appropriate vocabulary and grammar, and constructing narrative text structures as a whole. In addition, differences in students' abilities, interests, and learning readiness cause the writing learning process to not run optimally. This study used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design involving an experimental class and a control class. Data were obtained through pre-tests and post-tests of narrative text writing ability, then analyzed using statistical tests to determine differences in learning outcomes between the two groups. The results showed that students taught through Differentiated Instruction achieved higher writing ability improvements than students taught using conventional methods. The average score of the experimental class increased from 61.94 to 76.39, while the control class increased from 58.19 to 66.39. The results of the Independent Samples T-Test showed a significance value of 0.000, which is smaller than 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that Differentiated Instruction has a significant influence on students' narrative writing skills. Thus, this strategy can be an effective learning alternative in helping students improve their writing skills according to their learning needs and characteristics.

Abstract

Abstract:Matching phonemes (speech sounds) to graphemes (letters and letter combinations) was an important aspect of decoding (translating print to speech) and encoding (translating speech to print). However, most early childhood students did not receive explicit training in correspondence phonemography. Difficulties with accurate phoneme production and lack of understanding of sound symbol correspondences could make it difficult for students to: (1) identify pronunciation errors in general assessments and (2) provide a model of teaching English reading or provide remedial reading instructions. This community service examined the application of the distributed practice method in developing knowledge and phoneme-grapheme correspondence skills for early students. The sample of this study was 35 students aged 7-13 years in the village of semangat barusjahe tanah karo, North Sumatra. The test design consisting of pre-test and post-test was used to compare mass practice conditions (one 60 minute session) with conditionally distributed practice (four 15 minute sessions distributed over 4 weeks) to learn phonemes related to letters and letter combinations. The result of this community service was that students could improve their vocabulary and phonics skills orally and in writing by using English learning. Abstract

Code-switching by teachers in English learning remains a topic of debate, as it is seen as aiding comprehension, but also raises concerns about increasing students' dependence on their native language. This study aims to analyze students' perceptions of teachers' use of code-switching and its impact on their dependence on Indonesian in English learning. The study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive study design. Thirty students were selected as participants. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis with the aid of NVivo software for coding and theme validation. The results indicate that students positively perceive code-switching as aiding comprehension of complex material, reducing anxiety, and increasing participation and confidence in using English. However, the use of Indonesian does not create permanent dependence. Students utilize their native language as a temporary buffer to grasp concepts before returning to English for communication and practice activities. These findings suggest that purposefully designed code-switching can serve as an effective pedagogical strategy to support comprehension, engagement, and learning independence without diminishing the use of English as the target language.
