Abstract

Silica is the most abundant components in the earths crust and is made by way of synthesis for use in the application of technology. Silica are generally found commercially as alkoxysilane compounds (i.e such as tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), sodium silicate, and tetramethylorthosilicat). However, these compounds can have a negative impact on health. Thus, further approaches to find the source of silica that is safer, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly is inevitable. However, not all summary journals are thoroughly discussed the silica sources. Further, method of isolation and application of the silica from agricultural waste is limited. This paper reported studied several sources of silica derived from agricultural waste, such as rice husk, rice straw, corn cobs, and bagasse. In addition, this paper discussed also about the method of isolation of silica from agricultural waste, and its application as a catalyst.

Abstract

The present study investigated the photodecomposition of an organic material during the partial (88.76%) solar eclipse phenomenon of 9 March 2016 in Bandung, Indonesia. Curcumin and anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles were used as models of organic material and photocatalyst, respectively. The influence of the process parameters (i.e., curcumin concentration and the amount of TiO2) on the photodecomposition process was also investigated. The results showed that the curcumin was decomposed along with the solar light irradiation time. During the solar eclipse, the photodecomposition rate is suddenly down. The partial solar eclipse provided a slower photodecomposition process than the process under sunny days (conducted on 8 and 10 March 2016). The concentration of curcumin and the amount of TiO2 also have played an important role in the photodecomposition, in which the lower concentration of curcumin and the higher amount of TiO2 have a correlation to the obtainment of higher photodecomposition rate.

Abstract

Combination of spray drying and templating method has been reported as one of the best method to produce porous pharmaceutical particles. However, current development reports have shown successful formation of porous particles with improper information on what mechanism occurs during the synthesis process and what process parameters involve the creation of particles with controllable pore structures and morphologies. In this report, influences of spray-drying parameters (i.e., size and amount of colloidal template, and droplet diameter) on porous particle fabrication were investigated. Hyaluronic acid (as a model of pharmaceutical drug host component) and polystyrene spheres (as a model of template) were used. The experimental results showed that the spray-drying parameters strongly influenced the external morphology (i.e., spherical and doughnut-shaped), particle outer diameter (from 300 to 2000 nm), and porous configuration (i.e., number of hole cavities and pore sizes (from 100 to 300 nm)) of particles. To qualitatively explain our synthesis strategies to get porous structure, the proposal of the particle formation mechanism was added.

Abstract

Analysis of ball-milling process under various conditions (i.e. working volume, milling time, and material load) on the material properties (i.e. chemical composition, as well as particle size and morphology), product yield, and electricity consumption was investigated. Turmeric (curcuma longa) was used as a model of size-reduced organic material due to its thermally and chemically stability, and fragile. Thus, clear examination on the size-reduction phenomenon during the milling process can be done without considering any reaction as well as time-consuming process. Results showed that working volume is prospective to control the characteristics of product. Working volume manages the shear stress and the collision phenomena during the process. Specifically, the lower working volume led to the production of particles with blunt-edged morphology and sizes of several micrometers. Although working volume is potentially used for managing the final particle size, this parameter has a direct impact to the product yield and electricity consumption. Adjustment of the milling time is also important due to its relation to breaking material and electrical consumption.

Abstract

Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) has been developed as a tool for the simultaneous and quantitative determination of organic components, including chemical bond, as well as organic content (e.g. protein, carbohydrate and lipid). However, until now, there is no further information for the detailed information in the FTIR peaks. The objective of this study was to demonstrate how to read and assess chemical bond and structure in the organic material. The analysis was then compared with the literatures. The step-by-step method on how to read the FTIR data was presented, including reviewing simple to the complex organic materials. This study is potential to be used as a standard information on how to read FTIR peaks in the biochemical and organic materials.

Abstract

Metal-organic framework (MOF) is attractive because of its representation as a class of crystalline porous materials with excellent properties, specifically its chemical functionality and high porosity, making it potentially tailored for various desired applications. Although the synthesis of MOFs have been well-documented, most reports are in the bulk and micrometer sizes. The synthesis of MOFs in the smaller size is still inevitable. This work reports the synthesis of nano MOF particles (i.e., MIL-100(Fe), HKUST-1(Cu), Cu-TPA, and MOF-5(Zn)). In the experiment, MOFs were created by interacting ligands and metal ions in the specific solvent in the solvothermal process. Different from other reports, this study used low concentrations of ligands and metal ions, in which this is effective to control ligand-metal ion interaction, reaction, nucleation, and growth of MOF. The successful synthesis was obtained and effective for various MOF particles by changing types of ligands and metal ions. The study also obtained that compatibility and dilution of the ligands and the metal ions in the specific solvent are important parameters. This information will bring new strategies and further developments for the synthesis of MOF materials for wider range of potential applications in separation, catalysis, dye adsorption, and drug carrier uses.

Abstract

At present, most countries all over the world are being hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and some even are being hit harder than others. This condition has caused widespread disruption of the economic, social, and educational systems in those countries.  Under these conditions, transportation systems also need to be considered. There are problems of distribution of drugs and kits of test equipment to areas far from large cities in the center of the corona pandemic due to access difficulty. Remote locations, being difficult to reach, make the distribution of drugs and equipment for rapid testing uneven so that the recovery rate of patients in the area has a low percentage. Meanwhile, it is essential to ensure the availability of drugs and rapid test equipment in every public health center in all directions of Indonesia. One possible solution is the use of drones to distribute these things to areas that are difficult to reach. This solution is expected to at least improve healing and reduce mortality for patients infected with COVID-19 in remote areas.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles as a learning media to enhance students' understanding of View of Nature of Science and Technology (VNOST). The method used in this study: (i) understanding how to synthesize ZnO nanoparticles using a liquid-phase synthesis; (ii) implementation of ZnO nanoparticles to students and analysis their comprehension using Transcript Based Lesson Analysis (TBLA) on the Learning Video Recording and Adaptation Learning Transcript VNOST questionnaire, which is linked to the implementation and pattern of knowledge construction; and (iii) descriptive qualitative analysis to analyze the understanding of VNOST for each Category (Naïve, Has Merit and Realist). To support this study, several analyses were done, such as a scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction to characterize ZnO nanoparticles’ morphology and crystal structure, respectively, prior to giving this material for further learning to students. Experimental results showed that the use of ZnO nanoparticles is effective to improve the student comprehension. The understanding in the principle of nucleation and growth can be explained well since the reaction of ZnO is relatively fast. Students became more serious in listening during the learning process and more curious to study science and technology. Based on a comparative analysis of the initial and final ability of VNOST, it is proved that there was a change in students' views related to science and technology.

Abstract

Indonesia faces decreasing in its number during period of 2018-2019 according to SINTA (Indonesian scientific indexing) database. This situation is alarming amid country’s effort to improve its research and development from which the scientific publication has been used as a measure. This article presents a dataset of bibliometric from all Indonesian institutions (424 institutions as of January 2020) indexed by Scopus database. We collected data on documents per year and document type. Different from other datasets, this article presents longitudinal data from 2014-2019, in which during this period dramatic change occurs from steep rise, exponential, and degradation during 2018-2019. We analyzed publication number from leading institutions at different points in time and compared document types (i.e., number of journal article and conference paper, in which both types are the driving force of Indonesia’s growing scientific publication number). Since this dataset covers all country’s institutions, it is potential for reuse by policy makers in research and development, researchers from each institution, as well as other stakeholders.
