Abstract

This study aims to (1) evaluate the concentration of detergents in the water of the Dayanan River, (2) analyze the ability of Pistia stratiotes to reduce detergents, and (3) evaluate the effect of phytoremediation media on the physiological response of carp (Cyprinus carpio). The study used a Complete Random Design (RAL) with a plant contact time treatment of 3 and 6 days on two types of media (river water and well water + 10 mg/L detergent), as well as three replicas. Detergent analysis was carried out using the SNI 06-6989.51-2005 spectrophotometry method. The results showed that the highest concentration of detergent in the Dayanan River was found in the middle (0.0497 mg/L). Pistia stratiotes effectively reduced detergent significantly (p = 0.025) with optimal time on the third day. The fish response showed an increase in the frequency of operculum opening on the third day (p = 0.004) and no mortality was found for 48 hours. These results prove that Pistia stratiotes is effectively used as a natural biofilter to reduce the detergent content in waters. Abstract

This study evaluated the effect of incorporating moringa leaf flour (Moringa oleifera) at varying concentrations into feed formulations on the proximate composition of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) feed. Five experimental treatments were tested, with moringa leaf flour inclusion levels of 0% (control), 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%. A proximate analysis was conducted to determine moisture, ash, fat, protein, and crude fiber content. The results indicated that only the control feed (0%) and the feed containing 10% moringa leaf flour met the required protein standards for formulated feed, at 30% and 25%, respectively. Feeds with higher inclusion levels had protein content below the minimum threshold. The lowest crude fiber content (14.98%) was recorded in the 10% treatment, which was lower than that of the control. Ash, fat, and moisture contents remained relatively stable across all treatments and within acceptable ranges for fish feed. The formulation with 10% moringa leaf flour provided the optimal nutritional profile, delivering adequate protein (25%) and the lowest crude fiber (14.98%), thereby meeting nutritional requirements without compromising digestibility. Based on proximate analysis, moringa leaf flour shows potential as an efficient alternative feed ingredient for tilapia aquaculture.

Abstract

Smoked skipjack tuna (cakalang fufu) is a traditional fishery product from North Sulawesi with strong cultural and economic value. Typically, its natural color ranges from reddish to brownish. However, to enhance visual appeal, some producers add synthetic dyes, including Rhodamine-B, which poses potential health risks to consumers. This study aims to evaluate the potential of phycoerythrin pigment derived from the red alga Halymenia durvillei as a safe and functional natural colorant for smoked skipjack tuna, assessed through physicochemical, microbiological, and organoleptic characteristics during cold storage. The research employed a completely randomized design (CRD) with four treatment factors: phycoerythrin concentration, soaking duration, smoking temperature, and smoking duration. Parameters analyzed included moisture content, pH, Total Plate Count (TPC), and organoleptic attributes. Analyses were conducted on day 0 and day 7 of cold storage in vacuum packs. Results showed that moisture content decreased during storage. pH values also declined but did not differ significantly among treatments. TPC tended to increase over storage time but remained far below the maximum allowable microbial limits. Organoleptic evaluation indicated that phycoerythrin addition significantly improved product appearance without reducing acceptance of aroma, taste, or texture. The best overall sensory performance was observed in treatments incorporating phycoerythrin pigment. This study demonstrates that phycoerythrin has strong potential as a safe and effective natural colorant for smoked skipjack tuna, enhancing visual quality while maintaining product stability during storage.

Abstract

This study documents and identifies the diversity of coral reefs and reef fish species in the waters of Bangka Island, North Sulawesi, a coastal area rich in marine biodiversity and ecologically and economically important to the local community. The Underwater Visual Census (UVC) method was used through snorkeling and diving at depths of less than 18 meters at three locations (Coral Eye house reef, Tanjung Husi, and Linggua) from March 14 to April 4, 2025. Visual data were collected and identified in the Coral Eye Library. The results indicate that the coral reef ecosystem around Coral Eye is dominated by branching corals (Acropora) and stony corals (massive), which are important habitats for reef fish. The reef fish community is dominated by the families Pomacentridae and Chaetodontidae at depths of less than 20 meters. Fish were grouped into indicator fish (family Chaetodontidae with 6 species), target fish (5 families with 10 species, including Serranidae, Mullidae, Siganidae, Labridae, and Scaridae), and major groups (14 families with 34 species). This study provides strategic recommendations for maintaining and preserving coral reef ecosystems and reef fish diversity on Bangka Island. Keywords: Coral reefs; Reef fish; Bangka Island Abstrak. Abstract

Rocky intertidal shores are dynamic coastal ecosystems characterized by strong environmental gradients that generate distinct patterns of organism zonation. Limpets (Patellogastropoda) play a crucial role as primary herbivores and ecological indicators in these habitats. This study aimed to examine species composition and density of limpets in the upper and lower intertidal zones of the rocky intertidal shore of Akaiwa, Tomioka, Amakusa, Japan. The research was conducted from February to March 2025. Sampling was conducted using a quadrat sampling method with quadrats measuring 25 cm × 25 cm, randomly placed within a 10 m × 15 m study area across the upper and lower intertidal zones. Limpet specimens were identified based on shell morphological characteristics, and species density was calculated and statistically compared between zones using a t-student test. The results recorded eight limpet species belonging to the families Lottidae and Nacellidae, with seven species occurring in the upper zone and six species in the lower zone. Limpet density in the upper intertidal zone ranged from 1.60 to 20.80 ind/m² and was dominated by Lottia tenuisculpta, whereas the lower zone exhibited higher densities ranging from 1.60 to 28.80 ind/m², with a significant dominance of Cellana toreuma. The study concludes that limpet community structure is strongly influenced by vertical intertidal zonation. Further long-term studies are recommended to elucidate temporal dynamics of limpet communities in relation to seasonal variation and environmental change. Abstract

Plankton communities play a crucial role in marine ecosystems and are widely used as bioindicators of environmental quality. This study aimed to map plankton community structure in several coastal waters of North Sulawesi and evaluate their potential as indicators of marine ecosystem health. Plankton samples were collected from Bunaken, Lembeh Strait, Amurang, Belang, and Likupang using standard plankton net tows. Community structure was analyzed using species composition, abundance, Shannon–Wiener diversity index (H′), evenness (E), and dominance (D). The results showed clear spatial variation in plankton community structure among study sites. Higher diversity values were recorded in Bunaken (H′ = 2.78; E = 0.81; D = 0.18) and Lembeh Strait (H′ = 2.65; E = 0.79; D = 0.21), indicating relatively stable marine conditions. In contrast, Likupang exhibited lower diversity and higher dominance (H′ = 1.43; E = 0.52; D = 0.39), suggesting greater environmental stress. These patterns demonstrate that plankton community indices are sensitive indicators of ecosystem condition in tropical coastal waters. The findings also highlight the potential use of plankton ecological data as contextual learning resources in science education, particularly for teaching marine ecosystem dynamics, biodiversity, and environmental monitoring using real environmental datasets from local coastal ecosystems
