Abstract

Ganda Bakery is a legendary food business that has been operating since 1979, located at Jl. Kartini No. 21, Pematangsiantar, North Sumatra. The main issue lies in one of its flagship products, the jumbo bread filled with srikaya, which still uses basic packaging made of paper and rubber bands, without any brand identity or appealing design. This has led to consumer complaints, especially from tourists, as the packaging is considered unattractive, non-functional, and impractical for use as a long-distance food souvenir. This study aims to design new packaging that reflects consumer preferences using the Kansei Engineering approach and the Kano Model. An initial questionnaire was distributed to 96 respondents, with 77.1% stating that the current packaging is neither attractive nor functional. The analysis generated 190 Kansei words, which were refined into 15 core descriptors, including durable, eye-catching, innovative, strong identity, and informative. These were then analyzed through validity, reliability, and factor analysis. The Kano Model results indicated that attributes such as informative, high-quality materials, shape that matches the contents, clear text, visual appeal, durability, ease of use, and illustration belong to the One-Dimensional category. Meanwhile, attributes like innovative, strong identity, and colourful packaging fall under the Attractive category, while varied typography and unique design are categorized as Indifferent. The best design, scoring 4.31, features a gable box measuring 26 × 10 × 16 cm, which is ergonomic and practical, made from thick art carton with a protective layer, in bright yellow and dark brown, and includes complete, easy-to-read product information.

Abstract

PT. Sisirau Palm Oil Mill Company is engaged in the production of crude palm oil (CPO) and kernel. In its production processes, the company continuously operates heavy machinery around the clock. These machines generate high noise levels, potentially causing both auditory (hearing-related) and non?auditory (communication, physiological, psychological, and work?productivity) disturbances among workers. This study aims to map the noise levels and analyse their impact on auditory and non?auditory disorders among workers at the production workstations of PT. Sisirau’s palm oil mill. Measurements were taken at 74 points across five production workstations: the kernel station, boiler station, engine room, clarification station, and press station. Using a Sound Level Meter, noise measurements were converted into equivalent continuous sound levels, followed by regression analysis employing the t?test to determine the relationship between noise exposure and worker disturbances. The results show that most measurement points at the production workstations exceeded the established Threshold Limit Value (TLV), with an average noise level of 98?dB. This indicates that noise levels in production areas are very high and require immediate reduction measures. Moreover, the statistical analysis revealed a significant correlation between noise levels and both auditory and non?auditory disturbances among workers (P-value = 0.002 0.05). In other words, as noise exposure increases, so does the risk of hearing impairment, communication problems, physiological and psychological effects, and reduced work productivity. These findings underscore the urgent need for noise control efforts, improvements to the working environment, and the implementation of more effective and consistent occupational health and safety policies to safeguard the health and safety of workers at PT. Sisirau’s palm oil mill.

Abstract

The rapid growth of the fast-food industry has intensified competition, requiring continuous service quality improvements to maintain customer satisfaction and loyalty. At a popular restaurant, customers often face long queues, with waiting times ranging from 8 to 35 minutes, potentially reducing satisfaction and repeat visits. This study examines the operational conditions of a restaurant that implements a single-channel service system with two process stages: cashier service and food preparation and serving in the kitchen. Observations show that total service time ranges from 8 to 35 minutes, consisting of cashier time of approximately 2–15 minutes and kitchen processing time of 6–20 minutes, with significant variation leading to the formation of long queues. This situation indicates a major bottleneck in the system, particularly in the kitchen during surges in demand, which results in customers leaving the queue before being served and potentially leading to lost revenue. Therefore, this study applies a simulation approach to represent the real conditions of restaurant operations, identify bottlenecks, and evaluate alternative service facility improvements in a structured manner without disrupting operational activities, in order to obtain a more optimal system configuration in terms of waiting time, service capacity, and cost efficiency. This study aims to identify the most suitable queuing model and optimal service facility configuration to reduce both waiting time and queuing costs. Data were collected over three consecutive days through direct observation (1:00 PM–9:00 PM WIB), covering customer arrival, cashier service, food preparation, and order pickup times. Analysis was performed using Arena software supported by distribution testing and scenario simulations. The best improvement scenario involved adding one kitchen station staffed by two employees, reducing the average waiting time from 21 to 13 minutes and achieving a total queuing cost of Rp 227,237.4 per hour. Clarity in cost calculations is necessary so that scenario selection truly reflects the consideration between increasing service capacity and costs that must be borne. However, the lack of explanation regarding the method for assessing customer waiting time costs, assumed labor wage rates, and the basis for calculating operational costs makes the results of the economic analysis difficult to retest and verify. Thus, although the simulation results indicate a decrease in waiting time, the validity of decisions in optimizing service facilities still needs to be supported by a more detailed, measurable, and systematic description of the cost structure. This adjustment resulted in a multi-channel, multi-phase system, enhancing operational efficiency and customer satisfaction. The urgency of this research is important because restaurants experience an imbalance between service capacity and high demand during peak hours. This condition causes long queues and increased customer waiting times. This has an impact on decreased satisfaction and the potential loss of customers who leave the queue. A simulation approach is needed to test various scenarios and determine the most optimal service configuration efficiently.

Abstract

Manual welding activities at UD. Inti Teknindo are carried out with work postures that are not very ergonomic, such as bending over, squatting, and leaning down for long periods, which can potentially cause musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). This study aims to determine the risk level of welding workers' postures using the Workplace Ergonomic Risk Assessment (WERA) method and to provide improvement suggestions to reduce the risk of MSDs. The study was conducted on 4 welding workers using observation, documentation, interviews, the Nordic Body Map (NBM) questionnaire, and anthropometric measurements. The NBM questionnaire results showed that all workers were at high-risk levels with scores of 71–73, indicating complaints in the back, waist, neck, shoulders, and wrists. The analysis using the WERA method showed that worker 1 scored 45, worker 2 scored 45, worker 3 scored 45, and worker 4 scored 44, so all workers fall into the high-risk category and need corrective action. Based on this analysis, a work facility in the form of an Adjustable Welding Support Stand is proposed, designed according to the workers' anthropometric data with a stand height of 97.37–101.62 cm and a work area width of 44.3 cm. The evaluation results of the proposed design show the WERA score dropped to 27, which falls into the low-risk category. Therefore, this proposed work facility can improve working posture, reduce the risk of MSDs, and increase comfort and safety for welding workers at UD. Inti Teknindo.

Abstract

Sand shoveling activities at UD. Pasir Berlian are still performed manually using non-ergonomic working postures, such as bending, lifting, and repeatedly transferring sand over long working hours. These conditions increase the risk of developing Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) among workers. This study aims to assess the level of work posture risk and propose ergonomic improvements to work facilities in order to reduce the risk of MSDs. The study involved four sand-shoveling workers at UD. Pasir Berlian, North Labuhanbatu Regency. The research employed the Key Indicator Method for Lifting, Holding, and Carrying (KIM-LHC) to evaluate work posture risk, the Nordic Body Map (NBM) questionnaire to identify musculoskeletal complaints, and anthropometric measurements as the basis for designing an ergonomic work facility. Data were collected through observation, interviews, documentation, and questionnaires. The results showed that all workers obtained a KIM-LHC score of 200, indicating a high-risk category that requires immediate ergonomic intervention. The NBM results revealed that the most common musculoskeletal complaints occurred in the upper back, lower back, shoulders, arms, wrists, and legs due to repetitive shoveling activities and prolonged bending postures. To address these issues, an ergonomic platform or sand storage container was designed based on workers' anthropometric data to promote a more neutral working posture, reduce repetitive bending and manual lifting, and ultimately minimize the risk of MSDs while improving workers' comfort, safety and productivity.
