Abstract

Despite many countries have either reduced or banned asbestos use, Indonesia has yet to ban the use of asbestos. Asbestos exposure poses significant health risks, particularly respiratory diseases such asbestos-related lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis known as an asbestos-related disease. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), asbestos is a major global health concern with millions of people exposed to its hazards and resulting in a significant number of deaths each year. We conducted a literature review study on the topic of asbestos-related diseases in Indonesia. Based on our findings, due to the large amount of asbestos being handled, it is expected that there should be hundreds to a thousand cases of asbestos-related disorders in Indonesia each year. Unfortunetely it is uncommon to find and diagnose cases of asbestos-related diseases in Indonesia. The lack of awareness, inadequate diagnosis, and underreporting of asbestos-related diseases contribute to the challenges faced in Indonesia. The study emphasizes the need for a comprehensive ban on asbestos, safer alternative materials, standardized medical surveillance for exposed workers, increased awareness and cooperation among stakeholders to eliminate asbestos-related diseases in Indonesia.

Abstract

Violence in the workplace is an act or threat of violence against workers, both inside and outside the workplace, ranging from insults, threats, intimidation, and physical assault to murder. Although violence in the workplace has become a global concern, the true extent of this problem is still underreported due to low awareness and lack of awareness of the issues within the body. Therefore, if violence in the workplace is not addressed, especially in the health sector, it will become a global phenomenon that will disrupt the peace and stability of the working community and pose a risk to the health and welfare of society. Therefore, this review aims to identify the risk factors and impacts of workplace violence in health care and demonstrate the collaborative efforts needed to support managing and preventing violence in the workplace.   Keywords: Violence, workplace, Healthcare worker.

Abstract

Multifocal osteosarcoma is a rare form osteosarcoma. It is diagnosed by having two or more lesions without any visceral damage. Osteosarcoma is characterized by having concurrent numerous lesions; the synchronous type,  and metachronous type are characterized by non-concurrent multiple lesions form. This case reports a boy 4 years old with a left femur osteosarcoma; histopathologically confirmed as chondroblastic osteosarcoma. After 5 months of chemotherapy, a new lesion was found at the left side of the cruris and pedis bones that were multiple, destructive, permeative, and exhibiting periosteal reaction. No visceral damage was found.  In this case, the patient had a primary lesion and new non-concurrently lesions and no visceral damage, as conclusion was diagnosed as metachronous multifocal osteosarcoma that had never been reported in Indonesia.

Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global problem whose number of sufferers is increasing. Various methods have been widely used to prevent worsening of kidney function. In addition to controlling causative factors, diet planning also plays a role in improving kidney function. Confining protein utilization has long been a foundation of wholesome treatment for patients with CKD. In any case, the suggested sum of dietary protein admissions may change between consensus. A vegan who eats less that's exceptionally low in protein has appeared to diminish the chance of kidney failure in patients with progressed CKD. These findings indicate that protein sources can also influence the improvement of kidney function. Dietary medications play a good part in the management of CKD and avoiding or postponing kidney replacement therapy. The study proposes that a plant-dominant low-protein diet (PLADO) of 0.6–0.8 g/kg/day composed of >50% plant-based sources, managed by nutritionists prepared in non-dialysis CKD care, is promising and reliable with the exactness diet. Plant-based Very low-protein diets may inhibit decreased eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) and the need for renal replacement therapy. This literature review aims to find evidence about the effectiveness of plant-based diets in treating cases of chronic kidney failure.

Abstract

This paper draws attention to a recently identified sub-variant of SARS-CoV-2 known as EG 5, colloquially named "Eris," designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a variant of interest. The organization has urged nations to monitor and respond to the spread of this sub-variant since its identification on February 17, 2023. The discovery of the EG 5 variant, a sublineage of the Omicron variant, has introduced new challenges. Designated a "variant of interest" by the WHO, EG 5 carries distinctive genetic mutations, including an additional F456L amino acid mutation in the spike protein. Global prevalence has doubled, raising concerns about increased transmissibility. Although specific symptoms of EG 5 are not yet fully characterized, the variant has spread to 51 countries, with over 7,000 reported cases by August 15, 2023. The manuscript also explores the unique situation in Iraq, where, as of August 17, 2023, no EG 5 cases have been officially recorded. However, challenges such as self-treatment at. As the world grapples with the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, understanding the dynamics of emerging variants is crucial for effective public health responses and the development of targeted interventions.

Abstract

Introduction: Blood transfusion can cause infectious complications through transfusion of microbes present in asymptomatic donor blood and/or contamination of stored blood products such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, syphilis, malaria, Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. The risk of infection increases with the amount of blood products transfused.  Case presentation: A 5-month-old boy who had never been to malaria endemic area with jaundice and abdominal enlargement since two months ago, fever since one month ago, and icteric sclera. Data from laboratory results shows anemia, leukocytosis, hyperbilirubinemia, elevated liver enzyme, positive IgM and IgG anti-CMV. Blood smear evaluation:  Trophozoite and ring forms of malaria parasites. Abdominal USG: Type-I Biliary atresia, Choledochal cyst, splenomegaly, ascites, and right pleural effusion. Discussion: An acute Transfusion-transmitted CMV infection in high-risk patients can have severe complications such as billiary atresia, myocarditis, retinitis, encephalitis, or encephalopathy. Leucodepleted blood products for transfusion can reduce the risk of infection. Thick and thin blood smears which is the gold standard for diagnosing malaria, cannot be used for donor screening. Asymptomatic malaria infections may remain undetected. Conclusion: Blood transfusion screening for infectious diseases is still very limited for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, and HIV. It is necessary to think about blood transfusion screening for other infectious diseases, such as CMV and malaria, especially in endemic areas, to prevent the occurrence of transfusion-transmitted infection.

Abstract

Dermoid and epidermoid cysts are prevalent benign orbital tumors in childhood, representing 3-9% of pediatric ocular tumors. Occasionally, dermoid cysts can attain significant size, leading to cosmetic deformities. A precise surgical approach to dermoid cysts can lead to considerable cosmetic improvement for the patient. A 19-year-old female presented with swelling in the outer corner of her left eye, accompanied by minor discomfort in the affected area. Upon ophthalmologic examination 1.5x1 cm masses were detected in the upper left eyelid near the lateral canthus Clinical diagnosis of Dermoid cyst left eye upper eyelid made. Subsequently, a surgical excision under general anesthesia was scheduled. During the procedure, the cyst was successfully excised while preserving the cyst wall integrity. The conclusion is imperative for ophthalmologists to recognize the necessity of precisely performing surgical excision of these cysts to achieve favorable functional and aesthetic outcomes.

Abstract

The aging process is associated with changes in hormone levels. There is a noticeable change in estrogen levels in women, while in men, there is a change in testosterone levels. In the elderly, as a result of the aging process, changes in these hormone levels affect handgrip strength, and cognitive function. In both women and men, the function of several organs is influenced by sex steroid hormones, namely Oestrogen and androgens. There are two theories of steroid action mechanism on target cells, namely steroid hormone action mechanism genomically and non-genomically. The function and action mechanism of steroid hormone is important because it is the basis of the hormonal aspect for muscle mass, handgrip strength, and cognitive function. Due to the aging process, hormonal changes in the elderly are different compared to the previous period. This has consequences for changes in metabolic processes that affect the body’s condition, including changes in the composition of bones, muscles, and other tissues, such as the brain. In the aging process, it is important to pay attention to nutritional factors because they contribute to hormone levels that help maintain muscle mass, body mass index, hand grip strength, and cognitive function. In the brain, the sex steroid hormone has activating and organizational effects mediated by intracellular or transmembrane G-protein-coupled receptors. Articles published in English in the last 9 years (from 2014 to 2023) were retrieved from Science Direct, PubMed, Springer link, Oxford and Nature using relevant searching terms. The fact that testosterone bioavailability is predominated in the brain in relation to its activity and significant positive association with processing speed, sustained attention, and working memory in older men. To obtain a better quality of life for the elderly, nutritional factors must be considered to maintain optimal sex steroid hormone levels, hand grip strength, and cognitive function.

Abstract

As the global prevalence of air pollution continues to rise, understanding its intricate impact on human health, particularly respiratory well-being, becomes imperative. The research objectives of the article is to explore and establish clear connections between air pollution and respiratory health. Methods: A comprehensive search of peer-reviewed literature was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Articles published between 2015 and 2023 were included, with a focus on epidemiological studies, experimental research, and reviews that explored the impact of air pollution on respiratory problems. The result is this review synthesizes the established connections between these pollutants and a range of respiratory problems. Extensive evidence showcases how exposure to elevated pollutant levels escalates the risk of respiratory maladies, encompassing aggravated asthma, exacerbated chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) symptoms, compromised lung function, heightened susceptibility to respiratory infections, elevated lung cancer risk, and potentiated allergic responses. This review also underscores the heightened vulnerability of certain demographics, such as prenatal age, children, the elderly, individuals with preexisting respiratory conditions, low socioeconomic groups, occupational groups, outdoor workers, and athletes, immune-compromised individuals, and genetic susceptibility to these detrimental effects. The underlying mechanisms orchestrating the impact of air pollution on respiratory health involve intricate interplays of oxidative stress, inflammation, and tissue damage within the respiratory system. In conclusion: The study advocates for urgent and targeted strategies to mitigate the adverse impact of air pollution on respiratory health.
