Abstract

Objective: Autoimmune diseases are complex disorders that arise when the immune system loses tolerance to self-antigens, leading to chronic inflammation and tissue damage. To understand disease pathogenesis and to evaluate therapeutic efficacy, animal models are widely used in autoimmune research. This review aims to analyze various types of animal models employed in studies of autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), and multiple sclerosis (MS), with a particular focus on reproducibility and clinical applicability. Methods: This study was conducted through the selection and analysis of scientific literature published over the last ten years (2015–2025), using specific keywords including “clinical application,” “autoimmunity,” “animal models,” “humanized mice,” “lupus,” “rheumatoid arthritis,” “reproducibility,” and “translational research.” Literature searches were performed in major databases such as Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Scopus. Results: Spontaneous models, such as NOD and MRL/lpr mice, exhibit close resemblance to human disease pathogenesis but are influenced by strain variability and environmental factors. Induced models, including collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) and experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), allow greater control over disease onset but do not fully capture the clinical complexity observed in humans. Humanized models demonstrate high translational relevance; however, their use is constrained by high costs and technical limitations. Conclusion: No single animal model is universally ideal for studying autoimmune diseases. Model selection should be based on biological relevance, reproducibility of outcomes, and the potential for clinical translation in autoimmune disease research.

Abstract

Sunscreens are topical agents that protect the skin from the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, a major contributor to premature aging and skin cancer. These products are typically categorized into two main types: physical (inorganic or mineral) and chemical (organic) sunscreens. Physical sunscreens primarily consist of zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO₂), which reflect and scatter UV rays, thereby providing broad-spectrum protection. Compared with chemical sunscreens, which absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat, inorganic agents are associated with a lower risk of systemic absorption and skin irritation, making them particularly suitable for sensitive skin and pediatric use. This review explores the fundamental mechanisms of action, formulation challenges, and comparative effectiveness of inorganic sunscreens. Special attention is given to their photostability, which contributes to longer-lasting protection, and to their safety profiles in both acute and chronic use. Additionally, recent innovations in nanoparticle technology have enhanced the aesthetic appeal of these agents by reducing visible residue. However, this has also raised new concerns about nanoparticle penetration and environmental impact. Finally, the review addresses public health considerations, including regulatory updates, consumer preferences, and the role of education in promoting informed use of sunscreen.

Abstract

Background: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare benign vascular tumor that almost exclusively affects adolescent males. Despite its benign nature, JNA demonstrates locally aggressive behavior and is associated with significant intraoperative bleeding. Preoperative embolization has become an important modality to reduce tumor vascularization and minimize intraoperative blood loss. The Objective of this case report is to discuss the role of preoperative embolization in the management of JNA, including relevant vascular anatomy, embolic materials, benefits and limitations, as well as local case experiences in Indonesia. Methods: A literature review was conducted on the external carotid artery anatomy, etiology, epidemiology, histopathology, tumor spread and staging, and preoperative embolization techniques using various materials such as gelfoam, polyvinyl alcohol, ethanol, and microspheres. Additionally, two cases of JNA at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital were reported, both treated with preoperative embolization using gelfoam prior to transpalatal tumor resection. Results: In both cases, embolization successfully reduced tumor vascularity. However, due to surgical delay beyond 48 hours after embolization, intraoperative bleeding remained significant (800–1000 mL). Both patients recovered uneventfully without postoperative complications, and histopathological findings confirmed JNA. Conclusion: Preoperative embolization is effective in reducing intraoperative blood loss during JNA surgery and should ideally be performed within 24–48 hours before resection. This approach facilitates safer tumor removal, although its optimal success depends on timing, embolization technique, and operator expertise.

Abstract

Occupational diseases  remain a significant public health issue in various sectors, including small-scale poultry farming. In Ciambar Village, Sukabumi, chicken farmers are exposed to a variety of occupational hazards due to the absence of health evaluations and limited awareness of occupational health and safety. This community service program aimed to increase knowledge and awareness of occupational health and disease prevention among poultry farmers through educational counseling. The activity involved a health education session, supported by visual aids and interactive discussions. A pre-test and post-test were used to evaluate knowledge gain. Results showed a substantial increase in participants' knowledge, with post-test scores rising from 13% to 83%. These findings suggest that targeted educational interventions can significantly improve workers’ understanding of occupational hazards and encourage healthier work practices

Abstract

ABSTRACT Indonesian Migrant Workers (IMW) are a population group highly vulnerable to various health problems, including infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS. Harsh working conditions, high mobility, limited access to health services, and low knowledge about risk factors for HIV/AIDS transmission increase the potential for transmission in this group. Furthermore, stigma and discrimination against HIV/AIDS remain major barriers for IMW in obtaining information and conducting independent health checks. The lack of education on reproductive health and infectious diseases results in some IMW being unaware of risky behaviors that can trigger HIV/AIDS transmission, such as unsafe sex and the use of non-sterile injection equipment. This activity is expected to increase PMI knowledge about HIV/AIDS, encourage healthier and safer behavior changes, and increase access to preventive health services. This activity also contributes to efforts to prevent HIV/AIDS transmission both in the host country and upon PMI's return to Indonesia. This activity used counseling methods and conducted pre- and post-tests. This outreach activity was attended by 40 participants with the majority of participants being women (85%) and adults aged 19-44 years (55%). The pretest results showed that the majority of participants had lack of knowledge about HIV AIDS (87.5%), but after the counseling and the post-test, that those with lack of knowledge became 25%. Migrant workers' knowledge about HIV AIDS improved after being given counseling. Counseling is a quite effective method in increasing a person's knowledge. Keywords: Indonesian Migrant Workers, Counseling, HIV AIDS
