Abstract

As technology evolves, its potential to enhance language learning methodologies, particularly in terms of pronunciation, is becoming increasingly apparent. This study investigated whether students taught using TikTok achieved better pronunciation accuracy compared to those taught using YouTube Shorts. A quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest approach was employed, involving 46 9th-grade students from a private Islamic high school in Palangka Raya City, Central Kalimantan Province, Indonesia. Students were divided into two groups: one group received a TikTok-based intervention, while the other group used YouTube Shorts as a comparison tool. The results showed that students exposed to TikTok experienced a significant improvement in pronunciation accuracy (p = 0.001, p 0.05) compared to the group using YouTube Shorts. This finding suggests that TikTok, with its interactive and engaging short video format, is more effective in improving pronunciation accuracy and intonation among EFL learners.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore students’ perceptions of using TikTok as an online learning platform to improve English speaking skills. The background of this research was based on the importance of mastering speaking skills in English as a productive skill that supports communication and academic achievement. With the rapid development of the digital era and the increasing use of social media among students, TikTok was perceived to have potential as an innovative learning medium by providing engaging, easily accessible audio-visual content aligned with the preferences of younger generations. This study employed a qualitative approach using a case study design, which was conducted in an eighth-grade class at a Madrasah Tsanawiyah in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six purposively selected students based on specific criteria. The findings revealed that the majority of students held positive perceptions of using TikTok for learning English speaking skills. They stated that the educational content available on TikTok helped enrich their vocabulary, improve their pronunciation, and increase their learning motivation due to its enjoyable and accessible nature. However, some students expressed neutral to less positive perceptions, preferring traditional learning methods and noting the limitations of TikTok's algorithm, which did not consistently present educational content. In conclusion, TikTok showed potential as a medium for learning English speaking skills, especially when supported by appropriate instructional strategies

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the quality of the English for Nusantara textbook for eighth grade students based on Tomlinson's (2011) sixteen criteria for effective language learning materials. Using a qualitative content analysis method, the research focused specifically on one Chapters 0, 1, and 2 or one semester to examine the textbook's alignment with pedagogical principles such as learner engagement, authenticity, communicative purpose, and affective support. Data were collected using an evaluation rubric derived from Tomlinson's framework. The findings indicate that the textbook meets most of the criteria, particularly in terms of relevance, cultural integration, learner centered activities, and communicative input. However, the study also identifies areas for improvement, such as the inclusion of more authentic texts and differentiated tasks. Theoretically, this research contributes to the existing body of knowledge on effective language learning materials design by providing empirical evidence of how Tomlinson's principles manifest in government-issued textbooks. Practically, these results are expected to provide meaningful insights for educators, material developers, and policymakers in enhancing the design and use of English textbooks aligned with the Kurikulum Merdeka.

Abstract

Learning English is often challenging for junior high school students due to the limited usage of English in daily life, which can hinder their understanding of the subject matter. Learning activities are tasks undertaken by students in the learning process. Factors that can enhance learning activities include motivation provided by teachers to engage students actively in learning and the selection of appropriate and enjoyable teaching methods, one of which is the Grammar Translation Method (GTM). The challenge lies in creating effective and enjoyable learning environments, especially in teaching the simple past tense to eighth-grade students. The community service activity involving eighth-grade students was conducted on April 25, 2024, at Hidayatul Insan School. The activity aimed to strengthen simple past tense proficiency through the Grammar Target Method (GTM), covering three stages: preparation, implementation, and reporting. Implementing simple past tense using the Grammar Translation Method (GTM) for eighth-grade students at MTs Hidayatul Insan has proceeded smoothly and successfully. This is reflected in the high level of student enthusiasm during the learning process. With the implementation of this learning activity, it is hoped that the English language skills, particularly in the simple past tense topic, of eighth-grade students at MTs Hidayatul Insan will significantly improve in writing, reading, listening, and communication.

Abstract

The EFL students' difficulties in academic writing, including limitations in grammar, vocabulary, and idea development, necessitate innovative AI-based writing tools solutions. The usage of artificial intelligence (AI)-based writing tools to assist students in producing academic essays is examined in this study. Five English education majors who had completed essay writing classes and had prior experience with AI tools participated in semi-structured interviews as part of a phenomenological qualitative technique to gather data. Students utilize a variety of tools, including ChatGPT, Grammarly, and QuillBot, for brainstorming, grammatical correction, and idea organization, according to the study's findings. In general, they considered AI to be effective in speeding up the writing process, improving language accuracy, and reducing anxiety. However, they emphasized the importance of wise use to avoid sacrificing critical thinking independence. These findings confirm these tools serve as a support, not a substitute, in the development of students' academic writing skills.
