Abstract

In recent years years, play-based learning (PBL) has gained attention as an effective approach to early childhood education, especially in STEAM. Play-based learning can be an effective way to introduce young children to science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics concepts in a very fun and engaging way. Teachers play a vital role in promoting PBL in early STEAM education by creating a classroom environment that encourages exploration, experimentation, and collaboration skills. However, the limited research on the roles of teachers in promoting play-based learning in STEAM in early childhood education (ECE) drives the author to conduct this study to provide insight into how teachers can engage constructively to promote PBL in STEAM in early childhood education. This study aims to address this gap by exploring the role of teachers in promoting PBL in early STEAM education. Through a literature review, the paper defines PBL and STEAM, emphasizing the importance of PBL for young children's development. It also discusses the significance of teacher training and professional development in enhancing their ability to support PBL. Lastly, identifies challenges and opportunities in implementing PBL in STEAM, offering recommendations for future research to better integrate these practices in early childhood education.

Abstract

Gifted children are children who have high potential in various fields such as science, math, art, music, language, have creativity and task commitment. One of the challenges faced by gifted children is social-emotional problems, even though mature social development will help individuals interact well with other individuals. One of the efforts to overcome these problems is to develop media that easy to use and reach by various parties such as websites. Design and Development Research (D&D) from Ellis and Levy (2010) was chosen as the research method, data collection techniques were carried out through interviews and questionnaires with thematic analysis techniques and descriptive statistics. The participants involved were children, teachers, parents, media experts, and special education experts. The results showed that there are two main problems in gifted children, namely obstacles in interacting and obstacles in managing emotions. Based on this analysis, the website development is focused on three services, i.e.: 1) services for children; 2) services for parents; and 3) services for teachers. The developed website received a "very good" rating from the validator and also received a positive response from the research participants. Therefore, this website can be used as a medium for the social-emotional development of gifted.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a comprehensive school guidance and counseling program model by integrating the international models of ASCA (American School Counselor Association) and ABKIN (Indonesian Guidance and Counseling Association), tailored to the local context of Indonesia. The research utilised the Borg and Gall research and development design, which includes development, testing, and validation steps. A purposive sample of 141 guidance and counseling teachers from various educational levels across Indonesia participated in the study. The developed model consists of two main frameworks: a general framework and a specific framework. The general framework includes the foundation, delivery system, management, and accountability, while the particular framework covers the rationale, philosophy, vision and mission, and program audit. The model was validated by four expert validators: (1) a professor of Guidance and Counseling from Semarang State University, focusing on junior high school education; (2) a professor from Malang State University, focusing on senior high school education; (3) a professor from Indonesian Education University, focusing on elementary school education; and (4) an expert lecturer in Early Childhood Education (PAUD). The validation results showed an average score of 4.1 out of 5, indicating that the model was considered satisfactory in feasibility and completeness. Suggested improvements emphasised further adaptation to local conditions and strengthening evidence-based accountability. This model is expected to enhance the effectiveness of school counseling services by supporting student development in three main domains: the academic domain (learning to learn), the career/vocational domain (learning to earn), and the personal/social domain (learning to live). With a more adaptive approach to the specific needs at various educational levels, this guidance and counseling model can better support student growth.

Abstract

This study explores the development of expressive language disorder in a five-year-old child from the perspective of a parent in Bandung Regency, Indonesia. Using a descriptive qualitative case study approach, the research follows the child’s developmental history from the prenatal period through the age of five. Data were collected through in-depth interviews conducted between January and April 2024, using version D of the Speech Participation and Activity Assessment of Children (SPAA-C) instrument. The analysis employed a descriptive analytical method, including data reduction, data presentation, triangulation, and conclusion drawing. Findings indicate that the child’s expressive language delay is influenced by a combination of prenatal, perinatal, and environmental factors. The child was born prematurely and spent the first 43 days in an incubator, resulting in limited sensory stimulation during a critical developmental window. Prenatal risk factors such as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), fetal distress, and severe preeclampsia (PEB) were also identified. Perinatal complications, including intestinal infection, further disrupted early feeding and sensory experiences. Environmental factors such as limited interaction during the COVID-19 pandemic, extended family misconceptions about developmental red flags, inconsistent nutritional intake, and maternal psychological stress contributed to delays in expressive language development. Despite these challenges, the child demonstrated strong receptive language skills, age-appropriate cognitive development, and positive social functioning. This research provides context-specific insights into how expressive language disorders manifest and are managed in a non-clinical, culturally embedded setting in Indonesia. The findings have practical implications for early childhood education (ECU), particularly in informing inclusive teaching strategies for children with expressive language delays. Future research is recommended to explore classroom-based intervention strategies and to extend analysis across broader populations, including variables such as genetics, gender, cognitive profiles, birth order, and socioeconomic status.

Abstract

The transition from preschool to primary school is a critical period in a child's development, involving significant changes in environment, routines, and academic demands. Parental involvement plays a key role in ensuring a smooth transition; however, many parents experience anxiety due to misconceptions about literacy expectations and limited communication from schools. This study explores parents' perspectives on school transition, identifies challenges they face, and examines their involvement in supporting their children's adjustment. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, this study conducted in-depth interviews with four parents of first-grade students from different public and private elementary schools in Cimahi City. Observations at one public elementary school complemented the interview data. Thematic analysis was applied, and findings were interpreted using Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory to understand how various social and environmental systems influence school transitions. Findings reveal that parental concerns about school readiness often stem from misunderstandings about academic expectations and inadequate school communication. Fathers' involvement in the transition process was notably limited, with mothers playing the primary role in preparation and support. Strengthening collaboration between parents and schools is essential for an effective transition. According to Bronfenbrenner’s model, successful transitions depend on interactions across subsystems, including the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, and macrosystem. This study enhances understanding of parental roles in school transitions and provides recommendations for educators and policymakers to design inclusive transition programs. Future research could expand sample sizes and further investigate fathers' participation to develop targeted interventions. Encouraging stronger school communication policies and fostering collaboration between early childhood and primary educators can optimize parental involvement and support children’s transition success.
