Abstract

This study is motivated by the low computational thinking skills of elementary students due to conventional learning and limited use of innovative media, especially in abstract topics such as Earth and Space. This study aims to analyze the effect of unplugged media on sixth-grade students’ computational thinking skills. A quantitative pre-experimental design with One Group Pretest-Posttest was used. The sample consisted of 25 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using pretest and posttest and analyzed using descriptive statistics, N-Gain, and paired t-test. The results showed that the average score increased from 68.4 to 93.6 with an N-Gain of 0.78 (high category), and the t-test indicated a significant difference (Sig. < 0.05). It can be concluded that unplugged media significantly improves students’ computational thinking skills and can serve as an innovative learning strategy in elementary education.

Abstract

The development of computational thinking (CT) has become increasingly important in primary education, particularly in supporting students’ problem-solving skills in the 21st century. However, assessing CT skills, especially through process-based observation, remains a challenge. This study aims to describe students’ computational thinking skills in science learning through unplugged activities based on researcher reflection on teacher-reported observations. The study employed a descriptive quantitative approach involving 8 primary school teachers as respondents. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire designed based on three CT indicators: algorithmic thinking, pattern recognition, and debugging. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean, median, and standard deviation. The results showed that all CT indicators were categorized as very high, with debugging having the highest mean score, followed by algorithmic thinking and pattern recognition. The relatively low standard deviation and interquartile range indicated consistent responses among teachers. These findings suggest that unplugged activities effectively support the development of students’ computational thinking skills by emphasizing active, reflective, and structured problem-solving processes. Therefore, integrating unplugged activities into science learning can be an effective strategy to foster CT skills at the primary school level.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the need for science learning on animal classification materials that can improve conceptual understanding, creativity, and collaboration among elementary school students. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of implementing project-based learning with a STEAM approach through educational games on the learning outcomes of third-grade students at SDN 42 Pekanbaru. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method using a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 33 students. The implementation was conducted in two meetings, consisting of pretest administration, material delivery using the Cambridge module, group formation, implementation of an educational game project entitled Discover Animal Classification, and posttest administration. Data were collected through learning outcome tests and analyzed descriptively and inferentially. The results showed that project-based learning with a STEAM approach through educational games was able to improve students’ understanding in distinguishing vertebrate and invertebrate animals, classifying animals based on their diets, and identifying their locomotor organs. In addition, students became more active, enthusiastic, creative, and able to collaborate effectively in groups. Therefore, this learning model is effective in improving learning outcomes and developing 21st-century skills among elementary school students.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the importance of developing elementary school students’ science process skills in science education. The integration of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) is one approach that can support the development of these skills. The focus of this study is on how STEAM-based science education using sound-related materials can enhance elementary school students’ science process skills. This study employs a quantitative approach and utilizes a quasi-experimental design. It was conducted using a one-group pretest-posttest design. The subjects of the study were 30 fifth-grade students at a public elementary school in Pekanbaru, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a science process skills test, observation sheets, and documentation. Data were analyzed descriptively by comparing students’ pre- and post-test results. The results showed that students had an average pre-test score of 66, while their average post-test score was 64. STEAM-based learning provided a more active learning experience through observation, experimentation, and the creation of simple musical instruments, despite a 2% decrease in scores. Students learned various science process skills, such as observing, classifying, predicting, conducting experiments, and communicating observation results through these activities. Therefore, the integration of STEAM into science education enables contextual learning experiences and can support the development of science process skills among elementary school students.

Abstract

This research was motivated by students' low problem-solving abilities in science learning. The aim of this study was to analyze the implementation of coding-based unplugged learning on the topic "Forces Around Us" in improving the problem-solving abilities of fourth-grade elementary school students. This study used a pre-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design. Twenty fourth-grade students from SDN 184 Pekanbaru participated in the study. Data collection techniques used pretests and posttests to measure students' problem-solving abilities. The learning process was implemented through coding-based unplugged activities, including games, simulations, and developing problem-solving steps without using digital devices. The results showed a significant improvement, as evidenced by an average pretest score of 47.66, which increased to 96.66 in the posttest. The N-Gain value of 0.94 is in the high category. Thus, coding-based unplugged learning is effective in improving students' problem-solving abilities in science learning.

Abstract

This research aims to develop media teaching metamorphosis based on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) that is feasible and effective in improving thinking skills. This exploration is inspired by decisive reasoning abilities and understudies’ comprehension of the transformation learning of science material which isn’t amplified because of the growing experience which actually doesn’t utilize the right methodology and learning media. The motivation behind this review was to decide the attainability of STEM-based lifelike model media to further develop the decisive reasoning abilities of 3th grade primary school understudies. This sort of examination is Innovative work (Research and development) research utilizing the Borg and Gall model. The procedures of this research include several stages, namely analisis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Data were ccollected through observation, questionnaires, and tests. The feasibility of the developed media was determined based on validation results, while its effectiveness was measured by comparing students critical thinking skills before and after using the media. The results show that the STEM-based lifelike model media is feasible to be used in the learning process and is effective in improving the critical thinking skills of third grade primary school students. Therefore, this media can be used as an alternative learning tool to support science learning, especially in metamorphosis material, so that students become more active and better understand the learning content.
