Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model integrated with Malay Riau culture in enhancing students’ understanding of natural resources (NR) material. The background of this research is based on the importance of introducing the concept of natural resources in a contextual and meaningful way from an early stage of education, considering that textual learning without connection to local realities often makes it difficult for students to grasp the material. PBL offers a student-centered approach by engaging learners with real-world problems, encouraging collaborative solution-seeking, and prompting reflection, thereby fostering active participation and critical thingking. This study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of Student Worksheets (LKPD) and qualitative data obtained through observations and open-ended interviews with students. The research subjects were 32 fifth-grade students at SDN 111 Pekanbaru. The learning scenario raised local environmental issues linked to cultural values of the Malay community, such as gotong royong (mutual cooperation) and musyawarah (deliberation). The data show that 87.5% of students achieved scores above the Minimum Competency Criteria (KKM), with an average class score of 82.6. Observations also revealed active student engagement in group discussions, the use of local terms when expressing ideas, and the ability to propose culturally and environmentally relevant solutions. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi efektivitas penerapan model pembelajaran Problem-Based Learning (PBL) yang dikaitkan dengan budaya Melayu Riau dalam meningkatkan pemahaman siswa terhadap materi sumber daya alam (SDA). Latar belakang penelitian inii didasarkan pada pentingnya mengenalkan konsep SDA secara kontekstual dan bermakna sejak pendidikan dasar, mengingat pembelajaran yang bersifat tekstual dan tidak dikaitkan dengan realitas lokal sering kali membuat siswa kesulitan memahami materi. PBL menawarkan pendekatan yang menempatkan siswa sebagai pusat pembelajaran dengan cara menghadapi permasalahan nyata, mendiskusikan solusi, dan merefleksikan hasilnya, sehingga siswa dapat terlibat aktif dan berpikir kritis. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode campuran (mixed methods), yang menggabungkan pendekatan kuantitatif melalui analisis hasil Lembar Kerja Peserta Didik (LKPD) dan pendekatan kualitatif melalui observasi serta wawancara terbuka terhadap siswa. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas V SDN 111 Pekanbaru yang berjumlah 32 orang. Skenario pembelajaran mengangkat isu-isu lingkungan lokal yang dikaitkan dengan nilai-nilai budaya Melayu seperti gotong royong dan musyawarah. Data menunjukkan bahwa 87,5% siswa mencapai nilai di atas Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimal (KKM), dengan rata-rata kelas sebesar 82,6. Hasil observasi juga memperlihatkan keterlibatan aktif siswa dalam diskusi kelompok, penggunaan istilah lokal saat menyampaikan ide, serta kemampuan mereka menyusun solusi yang relevan dengan konteks budaya dan lingkungan sekitar.

Abstract

Science learning in elementary schools often encounters challenges when delivering abstract topics such as electromagnetism. Low student engagement and the lack of appropriate learning media lead to poor understanding and learning outcomes. This study aims to implement practicum media within a Problem Based Learning (PBL) approach to improve student achievement in the topic of electromagnetism. The study employed a qualitative approach using observation methods involving 31 fourth-grade students of SD Negeri 37 Pekanbaru. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and analysis of student worksheets (LKPD). The results showed an increase in student participation during the learning process and a rise in LKPD scores from an average of 80% in the first worksheet to 83,3% in the second. Additionally, students demonstrated a better conceptual understanding of electromagnetism, were able to assemble simple tools, and connect practicum results with scientific explanations. The study concludes that the use of practicum media in a problem-based learning model can enhance students' motivation, conceptual understanding, and academic performance in abstract science topics.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir tingkat tinggi peserta didik di SDN 192 Pekanbaru pada materi pewarna alami melalui penerapan model pembelajaran Inquiry Based Learning (IBL) berbasis kearifan lokal. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian tindakan kelas dengan melibatkan peserta didik sebagai subjek penelitian. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penerapan model IBL berbasis kearifan lokal dapat meningkatkan kemampuan analisis, evaluasi, dan kreasi peserta didik dalam memahami konsep pewarna alami. Peserta didik dapat mengaplikasikan pengetahuan mereka dalam konteks nyata dan mengembangkan solusi inovatif untuk masalah yang terkait dengan pewarna alami. Penelitian ini berkontribusi pada perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan di bidang pendidikan dasar dengan menunjukkan bahwa model pembelajaran yang berbasis kearifan lokal dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir tingkat tinggi peserta didik dan mempersiapkan mereka untuk menghadapi tantangan abad ke-21.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the improvement in elementary school students’ understanding of the properties of light through the implementation of the experiment-based Learning Cycle 5E model. This model consists of five stages: engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration, and evaluation. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with fifth-grade students as research subjects, divided into five small groups. Each group conducted experiments using simple tools aligned with the stages of the model. The results indicate that the implementation of the experiment-based Learning Cycle 5E model significantly enhances students’ understanding of light concepts. Students became more active, motivated, and able to relate the concepts to real-life phenomena. The use of concrete media also proved to be effective in helping students grasp previously abstract material. This model not only improves learning outcomes but also fosters critical thinking skills and active student participation in the learning process.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji praktik pedagogis guru kelas V sebagai agen perubahan dalam menghadapi tuntutan pendidikan abad ke-21 serta implikasinya terhadap pembentukan karakter siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan jenis deskriptif, dengan subjek seluruh guru kelas V, serta data yang dikumpulkan melalui observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi, kemudian dianalisis melalui tahapan reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa praktik pedagogis guru telah mengarah pada pembelajaran yang lebih adaptif dan berorientasi pada siswa, yang tercermin dari kemampuan guru dalam merencanakan pembelajaran secara kontekstual, menerapkan metode yang bervariasi, memanfaatkan teknologi sebagai media pembelajaran, serta mengintegrasikan pembentukan karakter melalui pembiasaan dan keteladanan. Proses pembelajaran juga memperlihatkan adanya upaya untuk membangun interaksi yang dialogis dan mendorong keterlibatan siswa secara aktif, meskipun masih dihadapkan pada berbagai tantangan seperti belum meratanya partisipasi siswa, keterbatasan fasilitas, serta pengaruh lingkungan belajar. Dengan demikian, praktik pedagogis guru menunjukkan kecenderungan menuju pembelajaran yang selaras dengan prinsip konstruktivisme dan student-centered learning, yang menempatkan siswa sebagai subjek aktif dalam proses pembelajaran, sekaligus menegaskan pentingnya penguatan kompetensi guru dan kolaborasi dengan lingkungan pendidikan guna mewujudkan pembelajaran yang lebih bermakna dan berkelanjutan..

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the critical thinking skills of fourth-grade elementary school students through the use of worksheets based on the unplugged approach on the topic “Plants as a Source of Life on Earth.” The background of this study is the still-low level of students’ critical thinking skills, which is caused by monotonous instruction and a lack of interactive teaching materials. This study employed a quantitative descriptive approach with a sample size of 26 students. Data collection was conducted through a multiple-choice test designed based on critical thinking skill indicators, namely providing simple explanations, building foundational skills, drawing conclusions, providing further explanations, and formulating strategies and tactics. The results of the study indicate that students’ critical thinking skills fall into the high category across all indicators, with respective percentages of 91.35%, 88.46%, 98.08%, 90.38%, and 90.38%. The drawing conclusions indicator received the highest percentage, indicating the students’ ability to process and integrate information effectively. These findings suggest that the use of unplugged-based worksheets emphasizing active analysis, evaluation, and problem-solving activities can effectively support the optimal development of students’ critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Scientific literacy is a basic skill that students need to have to face the challengesof the 21st century. This study aims to analyze the improvement of scientific literacyof fifth-grade elementary school students through the implementation of Science,Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)-based learning on the topic"Getting to Know the Earth". This type of research is quantitative with a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample of thisstudy consisted of 32 fifth-grade students of SDN 042 Pekanbaru who were selectedusing a purposive sampling technique. The data collection instrument was amultiple-choice scientific literacy test that covered the dimensions of PISA scientificliteracy. Data analysis used the average test and the Normalized Gain (N-Gain)formula. The results showed an average pretest score of 89.06 and increased to91.25 in the average posttest score. The N-gain analysis showed an increase of0.20 which is included in the low category. The low N-gain score is caused by theceiling effect because the students' initial scores were already very high, so the roomfor score improvement is limited. Overall, the implementation of STEM-basedlearning through the “artificial rain” experiment has a positive impact instrengthening students' understanding of scientific concepts and literacy in ameaningful way.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) approach in science practicum through simple experiments on the properties of light to improve the critical thinking skills of fifth-grade elementary students. The background of this research is the low level of students’ critical thinking skills, which is influenced by less innovative learning processes and the abstract nature of science concepts, particularly light properties. This study employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were 25 students of class VB at SDN 192 Pekanbaru. Data were collected through tests, observations, and documentation. The instruments included multiple-choice questions to measure critical thinking skills before and after the implementation of the STEM-based practicum. Data analysis was conducted using descriptive and inferential statistics, including normality tests, paired sample t-tests, and N-Gain analysis. The results showed that the average pretest score was 63.2 (moderate category), while the posttest score increased to 74.4 (good category). The N-Gain score was 0.3, indicating a moderate level of improvement. Furthermore, the paired t-test results showed a significance value (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores. Therefore, it can be concluded that the STEM approach in science practicum through simple experiments on light properties is effective in improving students’ critical thinking skills. This approach not only enhances conceptual understanding but also encourages active learning, problem-solving, and analytical thinking.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of STEAM-based (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) learning through a mini terrarium project in improving elementary students' science skills. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design (one-group pretest-posttest) involving 17 third-grade students at SD Negeri 112 Pekanbaru. The instruments used included learning outcome tests (pretest and posttest) and STEAM skills observation sheets. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, N-Gain test, and paired sample t-test. The results showed an increase in the average student score from 56 to 70, with an N-Gain value of 0.29 categorized as low but approaching moderate. Qualitatively, students demonstrated improvements in observation, classification, collaboration, and communication skills. Project-based learning through mini terrarium creation proved effective in helping students understand ecosystem concepts concretely and increasing learning engagement. Therefore, the STEAM approach has strong potential as an innovative learning strategy to enhance elementary students’ science process skills.
