Abstract

Extensive and continuous use of pyrethroid insecticides to prevent the transmission of malaria can lead to mutations in the voltage gate sodium channel gene (VGSC) in mosquito vectors. This gene mutation associated with insensitivity pyrethroid is known as knockdown resistance (kdr). The emergence of resistance to pyrethroid insecticides in vector mosquitoes can be a barrier to the successful termination of malaria transmission. Therefore, detection of mutation is necessary to prevent the resistency from build up. The aim of the study was to determine the resistance status of pyrethroid insecticides and identify mutations in the VGSC gene codon 1014 marker for resistance to Anopheles sp. which is a malaria vector in South Sumatra Province. Samples were taken from three districts in South Sumatra: Muara Enim, OKU, and Lahat. The susceptibility enzymatic test of pyrethroid insecticide (permethrin 0.75%) was preliminarily carried out according to WHO 2016 standard on Anopheles vagus Dí¶nitz species. Identification of VGSC gene mutation was performed on all An. vagus that were previously tested for susceptibility and on An. barbirostris van der Wulp species using seminested-PCR and followed by sequencing. The result showed that samples from Muara Enim regency had resistance, whereas in Lahat and OKU regencies were still susceptible to permethrin. From the sequence analysis it is shown that there are no change in DNA kdr bases in VGSC gene insecticide target sites from all regencies. In conclusion, based on molecular studies, there were no pyrethroid insecticide resistance in South Sumatra Province.

Abstract

Background: Dengue fever is a major public health problem, especially in heavily populated metropolitan areas like Palembang City, Indonesia. Gaining insight into the impact of climatic conditions on the dynamics of dengue transmission is essential for guiding specific public health actions. Objective: The objective of this study is to examine the correlation between temperature, rainfall, wind speed, air humidity, and the occurrence of dengue disease in Palembang City. Methods: Using observational data collected from 2016 to 2019 and 2022, we applied bivariate analytic approaches to evaluate the associations between meteorological factors and the incidence of dengue disease. Results: The findings demonstrate a notable inverse relationship between temperature and the occurrence of dengue disease, although rainfall displayed a favorable relationship. The relationships between wind speed, air humidity, air pressure, and dengue fever incidence were shown to be weaker. Conclusion: These findings highlight the significance of utilizing meteorological factors in early warning systems to enhance disease surveillance and control measures in metropolitan environments. This work helps to the creation of evidence-based strategies for reducing the burden of dengue fever in locations where it is common by explaining the intricate connections between climatic conditions and the dynamics of dengue transmission.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between diabetes comorbidity and COVID-19 severity in Muhammadiyah Palembang Hospital, focusing on hematological parameters as potential predictors of disease progression. Utilizing a case-control design with 61 respondents, demographic data, COVID-19 severity classifications, and hematological profiles were analyzed. Results reveal a prevalence rate of diabetes mellitus among COVID-19 patients at 32.8%, with diabetic individuals experiencing higher rates of moderate clinical complications. Hematological analysis demonstrates variations in parameters such as hemoglobin levels, platelet counts, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio between diabetic and non-diabetic COVID-19 patients. These findings underscore the importance of tailored interventions for diabetic individuals infected with COVID-19 and highlight the potential of hematological parameters in predicting disease severity. The study suggests the need for larger-scale, multicenter research to validate findings and inform evidence-based clinical practice in managing COVID-19 patients with comorbid diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease is one of the world's most serious health issues, including in Indonesia. Early detection and screening for cardiovascular disease are beneficial in reducing disease-related mortality and morbidity. Unfortunately, in Indonesia, the general public (particularly the elderly) rarely undergoes early screening for cardiovascular disease. Most elderly people complain of neck heaviness, which is one of the symptoms of high cholesterol levels in the blood. However, the majority of them are unaware of this because they rarely and reluctantly have their blood tested at a health facility. The goal of this activity is to detect cardiovascular disease early by checking cholesterol levels for free and educating people about the importance of protecting one's health from the various diseases that it can cause. Physical examination (height, weight), vital sign examination (blood pressure, pulse), cholesterol examination, and education are the three rare screening programs. This activity was completed voluntarily by 43 people. The majority of the participants were women between the ages of 41 and 60. According to the total cholesterol test, the majority of the participants had total cholesterol levels greater than 200 mg/dl. This means that these individuals are at an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Regular total cholesterol screening can help to prevent the development of cardiovascular disease and its complications, lowering cardiovascular disease mortality and morbidity in Indonesia.
