Abstract

ntroduction: Traditional postpartum care practices remain an integral aspect of maternal and child health in indigenous communities. Mararang tradition is a postpartum care tradition that continues to be widely practiced among Batak postpartum mothers, as it is believed to accelerate maternal and infant recovery through heat therapy. . This study aims to examine the historical evolution of the mararang tradition, its cultural significance, and its implications for maternal and infant health. Methods: A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed to explore the experiences of postpartum mothers practicing the mararang tradition. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with postpartum mothers, their husbands, traditional leaders, and healthcare providers in North Sumatra Province. Source triangulation, methodological triangulation, and data analysis were applied in this research. Thematic and content analyses were conducted to explore key dimensions of health beliefs, communication, and the transformation of the mararang tradition over time. Results: Participants ascribed thermal balance, comfort, and social support to mararang, while acknowledging potential risks from heat and smoke. Communication between families and midwives produced adaptive forms (e.g., moderated heat, improved ventilation, time?limited sessions), balancing cultural continuity with safety. We synthesise a conceptual model showing how explanatory beliefs, family authority, and professional guidance co?produce negotiated care. Conclusion: Mararang persists through culturally safe adaptations facilitated by respectful dialogue; practical safeguards (distance from heat source, ventilation, exclusion post?caesarean) can be embedded within routine postpartum care. Programmes should integrate culturally anchored counselling and risk?mitigation protocols, enabling context?sensitive maternal and newborn care.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to strengthen the literacy of santri (Islamic boarding school students) in religious moderation by integrating the core values of contextual jihad, inclusive nationalism, and ecotheology. The urgent need to fortify the younger generation's resilience against religious extremism, radicalism, and environmental apathy drove the initiative. The program employed a participatory action research method in Langsa City, focusing on the formation and training of cadres who acted as peer educators. A single-group pretest and posttest design involving 30 santri was used to measure changes in ecotheological practices and attitudes towards religious moderation and nationalism. The results demonstrated a highly significant increase in the santri's ecotheological practices (p < 0.001), evidenced by improved habits in water conservation, waste management, and use of reusable items. Furthermore, a significant strengthening was observed in their commitment to religious moderation and nationalism (p = 0.006), including stronger support for the rights of minorities, the Indonesian constitution (UUD 1945), and Pancasila. The study concludes that the peer-educator-based mentoring model is an effective strategy for simultaneously internalizing the integrative values of constructive jihad, nationalism, and environmental stewardship. This integrative approach offers a sustainable model for developing a generation that is religious, patriotic, and ecologically conscious, which can be replicated in other Islamic educational institutions. Abstract

Dali Ni Horbo, a traditional buffalo milk-based product from the Batak Toba community in North Sumatra, represents a culturally significant and nutritionally rich food. Despite its heritage value, its traditional form limits its appeal and market potential. This study aims to develop dali ni horbo into stick snacks, offering a modern variation that retains its cultural essence and health benefits while enhancing marketability. Conducted in Toba Regency from July to November 2024, this research involved 20 micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) engaged in culinary entrepreneurship. A mixed-method approach was utilized, encompassing interviews to gather perceptions of dali ni horbo organoleptic properties and innovation potential, alongside sensory evaluation to assess attributes including color, texture, and taste. The results indicate high acceptance of the new product, with texture (mean score: 4.15) and taste (3.95) identified as strengths. However, improvements are necessary in aroma freshness and saltiness to align with broader consumer preferences. The study highlights Dali Ni Horbo's potential as a nutritious snack, leveraging its high protein and calcium content to address nutritional deficiencies. Moreover, this innovation supports local economic empowerment by creating opportunities for MSMEs and fostering sustainable practices in buffalo milk processing. In conclusion, transforming dali ni horbo into stick snacks bridges traditional culinary heritage and modern innovation, offering economic, cultural, and nutritional benefits. Recommendations include optimizing flavor profiles, diversifying products, and enhancing market access through strategic partnerships with government and private sectors to scale production and expand distribution. Abstract

Child sexual abuse is increasingly common in many countries and is a global concern. The Multi-disciplinary Teams (MDTs) reported 2,250 children recorded cases involving other forms of sexual violence such as molestation with a range of 561 boys and 1,689 girls. Child sexual abuse is still frequent and unresolved in Thailand. Sex education is essential for health promotion, and media plays an important role in promoting individual health status and prevention efforts. This study aims to educate the prevention of sexual violence through educational game media, namely snakes and ladders for adolescents to see the level of knowledge of adolescents regarding the prevention of sexual violence. This study is a quantitative study using a one group pretest posttest design, namely by conducting a pretest and posttest on 31 students at Thamavitya Mulniti School Thailand. Data on pre-test scores and post-test scores were analyzed using Paired Samples T-test with a 95% confidence level. Students' knowledge was obtained before education and snake and ladder games with an average score of 74.97 and students' knowledge after education and snake and ladder games with an average score of 83.16. The results of the study obtained P-Value 0.006≤0.05 means that at Alpha 5% there is a difference between the average knowledge of Pre-Test and Post-Test. There was an increase in student knowledge between before the intervention and after the intervention. The conclusion of this study is that there is an effect of sexual violence education with snakes and ladders on increasing adolescent knowledge. Keywords: Adolescent, sexual violence, snakes and ladders game

Abstract

Backgrounds: Indonesia is the second-largest cigarette market in the world, with an increased smoking rate among young people aged 10-18 years. The latest data show that smoking is increasingly common in youth. Tobacco control will reduce public demand for tobacco products, especially if the supply of tobacco can be limited. Methods: This study, conducted in Tebing Tinggi City, North Sumatra Province, aimed to collect data on the density of cigarette sellers around schools and their impact on students' smoking behavior. The research involved 1914 students from 10 schools, examining factors such as smoking laws, age at first smoking, daily cigarette consumption, location, and advertisements. The study used a cross-sectional design, GPS coordinates, QGIS 3.0 analysis, and in-depth interviews with a Tebing Tinggi City Health Office representative. The findings will be analyzed using the JASP computer program. Results: The study shows that 8.2% of adolescents in Tebing Tinggi City have never smoked, with mixed views on the smoking law. The majority do not smoke, with varying smoking rates and exposure to cigarette advertisements. The study also found a high density of cigarette sellers in junior and senior high schools, indicating a lack of awareness about smoking. Conclusions: Most adolescents in Kota Tebing Tinggi do not smoke, with mixed views on the smoking law. They are exposed to cigarette advertisements in school and home environments, with vendors providing easy access. Increased awareness and effective law enforcement are needed to control cigarette advertising and sales.

Abstract

Children of migrant workers often face limited access to basic services and health education, which can negatively affect their personal hygiene practices. This community engagement initiative aimed to enhance self-efficacy and improve hygiene knowledge and behaviors among migrant children through simple, enjoyable, and contextually relevant approaches. The program was implemented at Sanggar Belajar Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, in July 2025, involving a total sample of 30 children aged 7-13 years. The intervention combined interactive lectures, demonstrations of the seven-step of proper handwashing, or what is commonly known as CTPS or Cuci Tangan Pakai Sabun, and toothbrushing techniques, as through a modified educational board game based on Snakes and Ladders. Monitoring was conducted descriptively through baseline and final observations, along with informal oral questioning (without formal questionnaires) to assess changes in knowledge, attitudes, participation, and signs of self-efficacy. The results indicated meaningful practical improvements: over 80% of participants could identify 3-5 correct hygiene practices; children showed increased confidence in demonstrating the seven CTPS steps and expressed commitment to brushing their teeth at least twice daily; and high levels of active participation were observed (≥25 children engaged in discussions, Q&A, and games until the end of the session). The program was well received by both participants and facilitators, suggesting that a combination of brief lectures, simulation, and gamification is practically effective for promoting hygiene in migrant community contexts Keywords: Personal Hygiene, Migrant Children, Indonesia, Self-Efficacy, Malaysia
