Abstract

Breast milk (ASI) is the best food for babies. Breast milk has advantages compared to other milk, including guaranteed cleanliness, the composition of breast milk is also very suitable for digestion, growth, and development of babies, one of the compositions contained in breast milk is protein. Currently, many mothers cannot breastfeed their own babies, so they choose infant formula as a substitute for breast milk. The purpose of this study was to determine differences in protein levels in infant formula and breast milk. Determination of protein content was carried out using the Kjeldahl method which is a simple method for determining total nitrogen in protein and other nitrogen-containing compounds. The Kjeldahl method is carried out through 3 processes, namely: the destruction process, the distillation process, and the titration process according to the procedures and tools used in the Chemistry Laboratory of the Sari Mutiara Indonesia University. The results of the determination of protein levels using the Kjeldahl method contained a protein with average levels in infant formula brand A (10.10 ± 0.96) %, infant formula brand B (10.95 ± 2.43) %, infant formula brand C (11.0666 ± 1.6932) %, and breast milk (20.5733 ± 3.1828) %.

Abstract

Tofu dregs waste contains 30.4% cellulose content, while kepok banana peel has high cellulose content (60-65%), hemicellulose 6-8%, and lignin 5-10%. The purpose of this study was to determine the process of making natural paper from tofu dregs waste and kepok banana peel waste as an alternative raw material for wood substitutes and to find out the characteristics of natural paper produced from tofu waste fiber and kepok banana peel waste based on SNI 287:2010 (including test water content) and SNI 6588-1:2010 (including pH acidity test). Based on the results of research that has been carried out, the optimum composition in making paper from tofu dregs and kepok banana peels is 50:50% variation. The temperature and time of heating and the optimum concentration of sodium hydroxide solution was 120 oC for 90 minutes with sodium hydroxide solution concentration of 10.0%, pulp content of 46.45%, cellulose content of 53.3%, and lignin content of 46.67%. All levels obtained have met the requirements of SNI. Based on the FT-IR spectrum analysis, tofu dregs and kepok banana peels are suitable for use as raw materials for making paper because they contain cellulose. Based on the SEM analysis, the morphological surface structure, the tighter the fiber bonds, this proves that the diameter of the resulting fiber is very small, because the smaller the fiber diameter, the better the mechanical properties.

Abstract

Lead (Pb) is one of dangerous heavy metals that is toxic for human bodies. Lead can be found in the air in the form of air pollution which is produced by the fuel of motor vehicles. According to WHO, in 1995, the level of lead inside the human body can be divided into three levels which are, low (<10ppm), moderate (10-20 ppm), otherwise high (>20ppm) according to the category of pollution. A pedicab driver and a street vendor who frequent the street will surely very often be exposed to vehicle fumes which contains lead (Pb). This experiment is aimed to find out the level of Pb in the hair of pedicab drivers and street vendors around Kapten Muslim Street, Medan. From the overall population is randomly taken each 4 (four) hair samples from pedicab drivers and street vendors, and then continued with an examination using AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer). From the result of the experiment, overall obtained that 1 (one) out of the rest is within the high level of toxicity (20,138 ppm), and then 2 (two) within the moderate level of toxicity (10,697 - 16,69 ppm), and 5 (five) others within the low level of toxicity (0,862≈4,533 ppm). This shows that almost all pedicab drivers and street vendors around the Kapten Muslim Street, Medan are already poisoned with heavy metal, Pb, inside their bodies.

This study aims to determine the optimum composition of antiseptic solid soap preparations from the ethanolic extract of lemon peel based on the requirements set by SNI 06-4085-1996 and the antibacterial activity test. The antibacterial activity test was carried out by the good method. Examination of Simplicia characteristics was carried out by phytochemical screening test. The antiseptic solid soap preparation was performed by organoleptic test, pH test, homogeneity test, high foam test, and antibacterial activity test. The concentration variations of antiseptic solid soap preparations were F1(5%), F2(10%), and F3(15%). Based on the results of research that has been carried out, the results of phytochemical screening tests for lemon peels (Citrus limon (L.) Burm.F.) contain secondary metabolites, namely alkaloids, flavonoids, and triterpenoids that function as antibacterial. Antiseptic solid soap made from ethanolic extract of lemon peel has met the requirements set by SNI 06-4085-1996, namely a solid and homogeneous soap with a lemon scent with a pH of 8.71-10.52, high foam 4.7-4.9 cm, as well as free alkali in a safe condition against the skin. Based on the results of the antibacterial activity test of solid antiseptic soap, the ethanolic extract of lemon peel (Citrus limon (L.) Burm.F.) can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. At a concentration of F1(5%) has a zone of moderate inhibition of 10.26 mm; at concentration F2(10%) has a strong inhibition zone of 11.78 mm; at the concentration of F3(15%) has a strong inhibition zone of 12.57 mm. Lemon peel extract can be formulated into a solid antiseptic soap with an optimum concentration of F3 (15%).
