Abstract

This study aims to investigate the impact of Islamization on the Padjajaran Kingdom, particularly in relation to the transformation of educational systems and the evolution of social values within Sundanese society. Employing a qualitative approach and historical case study method, the research focuses on the West Java region, which was historically part of the Padjajaran Kingdom. The findings reveal that Islamization did not merely influence religious conversion but also brought about significant transformations in the educational landscape, with pesantren and madrasah emerging as centers of holistic learning. Furthermore, the social values of Sundanese society underwent notable changes, including the adoption of principles such as justice, tolerance, and brotherhood introduced through Islamic teachings. Although the Padjajaran Kingdom did not fully transform into an independent Islamic state, Islamic influences gradually permeated and shaped its cultural and social structures. This study contributes to the historiography of Islamization in Indonesia by highlighting its multifaceted impact beyond religious aspects, particularly in education and social transformation. It offers a nuanced understanding of how Islamic values were integrated into Sundanese society and provides new insights into the role of Islam in shaping regional identity and socio-cultural development in pre-modern West Java.

Abstract

AbstractAccording to several sources, Islam entered the archipelago in the 7th century AD. It is estimated that during the same period the spread of Islam began to spread massively to the archipelago, until in the 15th century AD Islam entered the West Java region through trade routes. The Bandung area, which at that time was still within the scope of the Galuh Kingdom, was converted to Islam during the time of Sunan Gunung Djati in 1530 AD. This Islamization process became the starting point for the spread and development of Islam in West Java. There is a lot of research on the development of Islam in various areas of West Java such as Garut, Tasikmalaya and even Cirebon, which was the starting point for the entry of Islam into West Java, which is inversely proportional to Bandung as the capital of West Java province. Not many people have conducted research. Therefore, the author is interested in writing about the development of Islam in Bandung in context. division of the Bandung region, such as how the spread of Islam in various regions of West, East, South and North Bandung. The method used is the historical method, which includes heuristics, criticism, interpretation and historiography. Based on research results, the entry of Islam in various regions in Bandung had different starting points for the spread of Islam in each region. Like North Bandung, it was spread through the spread of the preaching of Sunan Kudus and his followers and descendants, many of whom settled in the North Bandung area.

Abstract

This study discusses the development and decline of Freemasonry in Indonesia from the Dutch East Indies colonial period to the administration of Soekarno. Freemasonry developed through Dutch colonial networks and exerted influence among the priyayi elite, intellectuals, and modern organizations such as Boedi Oetomo. This research employs a library research method by utilizing various historical sources, journals, archives, and official documents. The findings indicate that Freemasonry contributed to the development of modern thought and Western education in the Dutch East Indies, but it also generated controversy with Islamic organizations such as Sarekat Islam and Muhammadiyah, which viewed the organization as a threat to Islamic values and indigenous identity. The decline of Freemasonry began during the Japanese occupation in 1942, when the activities of Western organizations were restricted and their assets were confiscated. This condition continued during the administration of Soekarno, which strengthened nationalism, anti-colonialism, and the ideology of Pancasila through policies such as PEPERTI in 1961 and Presidential Decree Number 264 of 1962, which officially prohibited Freemasonry and its affiliated organizations in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

This study addresses the problem of how indigenous communities maintain cultural continuity, ecological balance, and health resilience amid the pressures of modernization. Focusing on Kampung Adat Miduana in Cianjur, West Java, this research aims to analyze the relationship among local knowledge, ritual practices, ecological wisdom, and longevity within the community. This study employs a qualitative ethnographic method, collecting data through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation with traditional leaders, ritual practitioners, elders, and community members. The results show that the longevity of the Miduana community is closely related to a natural lifestyle, including a plant-based diet, consumption of untreated spring water, regular physical activity through farming and walking in mountainous areas, and a balanced psychological-spiritual life rooted in Islamic values and local traditions. The community also utilizes approximately 120 medicinal plants and maintains ecological practices that support both health and environmental sustainability. In addition, agricultural rituals and communal traditions function as mechanisms of social cohesion, cultural transmission, and environmental awareness. This study concludes that Kampung Adat Miduana represents a sustainable indigenous model of living that integrates health, spirituality, local knowledge, and environmental harmony, although modernization remains a challenge to cultural preservation.

Abstract

This study examines the emergence, development, and socio-political impact of the Jihad Command movement in Pakenjeng District, Garut Regency, in the period 1976–1981. In contrast to previous research that focused more on Jihad Command at the national level, this study specifically emphasizes the local dynamics of the movement in Pakenjeng and its interaction with the community and state apparatus. This research aims to analyze the socio-political background behind the emergence of movements, the stages of movement development, organizational patterns and mobilization, and the state's response to the activities carried out. This research uses a historical-sociological approach based on the theoretical foundation of social movements and political resistance, especially related to ideological mobilization and state repression. The research method used is qualitative through document studies, archive searches, and critical analysis of relevant secondary sources. Data are analyzed through the stages of source criticism, interpretation, and historical reconstruction to obtain analytical validity and accuracy of the research context. The results of the study show that the Jihad Command movement in Pakenjeng developed through several stages, starting from the consolidation of ideology, the expansion of closed networks, to the strengthening of the narrative of religious militancy before finally experiencing setbacks due to the repressive actions of the state in the 1979-1981 period. This movement was influenced by a combination of ideological, political, and socio-economic factors, especially dissatisfaction with the New Order regime and the marginalization of certain Islamic groups. In addition, this study found that the social conditions of the local community in Pakenjeng also played a role in supporting the movement mobilization process. On the other hand, the state's response, which is characterized by surveillance, arrests, and legal action, has proven to play a major role in weakening and dissolving the movement. This research contributes to the historiographical study of radical Islamic movements in Indonesia by presenting a local perspective on Jihad Command in a broader socio-political and historical context.

Abstract

The Baduy (Kanekes) indigenous community in Banten, Indonesia, represents a distinctive sociological case of social resilience amid increasing modernization and state intervention. Previous studies have primarily focused on cultural traditions, ecological wisdom, and ritual practices, while paying limited attention to how customary institutions function as an integrated governance system that supports social resilience. This study aims to analyze the anatomy of Baduy customary institutions and examine their roles in maintaining social resilience through Talcott Parsons’ AGIL framework. A qualitative descriptive case study was conducted using secondary data obtained from ethnographic monographs, journal articles, government documents, cultural heritage publications, and sociological studies. Data were collected through literature review and document analysis, then analyzed using thematic coding and AGIL-based classification procedures. The findings indicate that Baduy customary governance consists of interdependent institutions that perform complementary functions related to adaptation, goal attainment, integration, and cultural maintenance. The analysis suggests that institutional differentiation and functional interdependence support the preservation of cultural values while facilitating engagement with external administrative and political systems. The study extends the application of the AGIL framework to indigenous governance and provides insights for cultural preservation, indigenous governance recognition, and state–customary relations in contemporary society.
