Abstract

Animal bites that transmit rabies are zoonotic diseases and remain a public health problem in Indonesia, including in East Nusa Tenggara, which has experienced an extraordinary event (KLB). Since 2023, the Alak Health Center has routinely conducted rabies monitoring due to the significant increase in cases every year and the high risk of death if left untreated. Therefore, a structured monitoring system is essential for rabies prevention and control. This study aims to describe the implementation of the rabies monitoring system at the Alak Health Center using a systems approach. A qualitative descriptive design was used, involving three monitoring officers as respondents. Data collection was carried out using questionnaires and mobile phones for documentation. The results showed that the input variables—materials, funds, and markets—were well met, but human resources were still inadequate because officers were assigned various monitoring responsibilities. In terms of process, epidemiological investigations and medical management have been carried out 100%. Outputs are met through routine reporting to the Kupang City Health Office. However, the expected results have not been achieved due to limited public awareness and participation in monitoring the movement of wild animals. The impact variable was achieved, as none of the 22 cases reported in weeks 1–19 of 2025 developed into suspected rabies cases. This demonstrates the effectiveness of monitoring in preventing rabies cases. However, ongoing challenges include excessive workload for monitoring officers and inadequate community engagement, highlighting areas for improvement in the sustainability of rabies control efforts.

Abstract

University students' nutritional status serves as a vital indicator for evaluating human resource quality in higher education. Despite their knowledge in nutrition and health, public health students are not immune to overweight risks due to lifestyle changes during college life. This study analyzed the relationship between eating habits and physical activity with overweight incidence among public health students at Faculty of Public Health, Nusa Cendana University. A cross-sectional study was conducted in March-April 2025 involving 210 students selected through cluster random sampling. Data were collected using validated questionnaires and analyzed using chi-square tests with 95% confidence interval. The study found significant relationships between eating habits and overweight incidence (p=0.041<0.05) and between physical activity and overweight incidence (p=0.041<0.05). Among students with good eating habits, 27.4% were overweight, while 25.8% of those with poor eating habits were overweight. For physical activity, 19.7% of students with good physical activity levels were overweight compared to 35.5% with poor physical activity levels. Both eating habits and physical activity significantly influence overweight incidence among public health students, highlighting the need for integrated health promotion programs.

Abstract

Gastritis is a digestive disorder caused by inflammation of the stomach that often occurs among students. Unhealthy lifestyles such as irregular eating patterns and high stress are the main risk factors for gastritis. Nusa Cendana University is a relevant location to conduct this survey because of the large number of students and the habit of consuming regional specialties that have the potential to trigger gastritis. This study aims to analyze the relationship between stress levels and eating patterns with the incidence of gastritis in Nusa Cendana University students. This study used a rapid survey design with a cross-sectional approach. A sample of 210 students was selected using the cluster random sampling technique using the Csurvey application. The independent variables consisted of eating patterns and stress, while the dependent variable was the incidence of gastritis. Primary data were collected through questionnaires, and secondary data were obtained from the Kupang City Health Office and Nusa Cendana University. Data analysis used the chi-square test. The results of the study were that out of 210 respondents, the majority of students who had poor eating patterns and experienced stress tended to experience gastritis. The results of the chi-square test showed a significant relationship between eating patterns and stress with the incidence of gastritis, where the p-value = 0,000. So it can be concluded that poor diet and high stress levels can increase the risk of gastritis in students at Nusa Cendana University in 2025.

Abstract

Background. Malaria is an infectious disease caused by Plasmodium parasites and transmitted through the bite of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. According to the Ministry of Health of Timor-Leste's 2023 malaria elimination report, Covalima, Bobonaro, and Oecuse districts collectively reported 9 malaria cases in 2023, along with a notable vector density. Spatial analysis offers a comprehensive method for compiling and managing spatial data, transforming it into meaningful insights. Aims. This study aims to describe malaria mapping based on epidemiological variables in Bobonaro and Covalima Districts, Timor-Leste. Methods. This descriptive epidemiological research utilizes malaria case reports from Bobonaro and Covalima Districts as its population and sample. Result. The results indicate that the Annual Malaria Incidence (AMI) and Annual Parasite Index (API) in these districts showed an increasing trend from 2019-2023, mainly attributable to imported cases from the border region between Covalima and Malaka Districts. Males and individuals over 15 years of age are more frequently affected by malaria, likely due to their higher levels of mobilization for work or other activities. Plasmodium falciparum is the most common species identified, primarily associated with swamp habitats. Conclusion. Covalima District has two temporary and one permanent swamp. Additionally, lake and lagoon habitats were identified in the Covalima Regency. The two regencies share similar conditions regarding sun intensity, rainfall, temperature, humidity, and altitude. Implication. Communities can play a crucial role in independent malaria vector control efforts, such as introducing larvivorous fish into water bodies and eliminating stagnant water puddles around homes

Abstract

Diarrheal disease remains a major public health concern in Kupang City, particularly in the service area of Pasir Panjang Public Health Center (PHC). Epidemiological surveillance plays a vital role in early detection and disease control. This study aims to describe the implementation of diarrheal disease surveillance at Pasir Panjang PHC. A descriptive qualitative approach involved in-depth interviews, observations, and document reviews. Informants included surveillance officers, health workers, and community health volunteers (cadres). Results showed that surveillance activities are conducted by trained personnel and supported by the Health Operational Assistance (BOK) program, which adequately funds promotive and preventive efforts. However, medicine procurement is managed by the District Health Office's Pharmacy Installation. Surveillance data are collected through reports from medical services, sub-health centers (Pustu), and cadres, with monitoring and reporting performed via the SIHEPI application. The surveillance targets all community members, especially vulnerable groups such as infants, toddlers, and the elderly. Notably, the highest incidence was found among children over five years old, potentially linked to school food hygiene, although further investigation has not been conducted. SWOT analysis revealed strengths in trained personnel and data completeness. Weaknesses include poor hygiene practices in the community (PHBS) and an increasing trend in cases. Opportunities lie in using digital media for health promotion and intersectoral collaboration to enhance surveillance efforts. These findings highlight the importance of strengthening health education and focusing on vulnerable groups to improve disease prevention and control strategies at the primary health care level.

Abstract

Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) is a collection of symptoms that occur in infants due to rubella virus infection during pregnancy, which can cause heart defects, visual and hearing impairments, and developmental delays. This study aims to describe the implementation of CRS epidemiological surveillance at Prof. Dr. W. Z Johannes Kupang Regional General Hospital. The study was conducted through secondary data analysis and a review of CRS surveillance implementation documents from 2023 to 2025. It was found that 64 CRS cases had been recorded, consisting of 1 definite CRS case, 23 clinical cases, 4 suspects, and 17 discarded cases. Surveillance was carried out in a sentinel manner and supported by an electronic recording system integrated with the Health Office up to the central level. The implementing staff consisted of specialist doctors, public health workers, and midwives. The analysis showed that the strength of surveillance implementation lies in the existence of integrated guidelines and reporting systems. Still, obstacles were faced, such as the unavailability of eye examination equipment, responsible persons who did not comply with the guidelines, and non-routine health promotion. The primary priority issue was the lack of eye examination equipment, which resulted in delays in diagnosis and data collection. As a remedial measure, it is recommended that hospitals immediately procure such equipment and strengthen rubella health promotion. In conclusion, although CRS surveillance at regional hospitals has been well-implemented, optimization of diagnostic facilities and public education is still needed to support the comprehensive elimination of CRS.
