Abstract

Science learning on the respiratory system material for grade VIII junior high school is still dominated by lecture methods and the use of conventional media, so that students' activeness and visual understanding have not developed optimally. This study aims to analyze the needs of teachers and students for the development of interactive flipbook E-Module teaching materials based on Game Based Learning (GBL) on the respiratory system material for grade VIII junior high school. The study used a quantitative descriptive approach with subjects of one science teacher and 29 grade VIII students of UPT SMP Negeri 1 Siak Hulu. Data were collected through teacher interviews and student needs analysis questionnaires covering four indicators, namely learning approaches/methods, learning media, teaching materials, and assessments. Data were analyzed using percentage techniques. The results of the analysis showed that all indicators were in the very needed category, with the percentage of learning approaches/methods of 82.76%, learning media 79.83%, teaching materials 81.38%, and assessment 85.17%. The interview results also showed that students were more active when learning involved game elements. Thus, interactive digital learning media is needed that suits the needs of teachers and students as a basis for developing more interesting and effective science learning.

Abstract

Abstract Biology learning requires active student involvement in the concept discovery process, yet the availability of teaching materials facilitating such activities remains limited. This study aims to explore biology teachers' perceptions regarding the development of inquiry-based teaching modules at SMA Negeri 5 Pekanbaru. The approach used was mixed methods with a sequential explanatory design. The subjects consisted of three biology teachers selected using purposive sampling technique. Data collection was conducted through perception questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Data analysis techniques employed descriptive statistics for quantitative data and thematic analysis for qualitative data. The results showed that teacher perception was classified as positive with an overall average percentage of 77.50%. The indicator of module needs and relevance obtained the highest score of 81.67%, indicating a high urgency for the availability of innovative teaching materials. Meanwhile, the support and barriers indicator obtained the lowest score of 73.33%. Qualitative analysis revealed that although teachers had a good conceptual understanding of inquiry, classroom implementation was constrained by time management and administrative burdens. There is a discrepancy between teachers' pedagogical competence in designing modules and the technical operational constraints in the field. This study concludes that teachers strongly require ready-to-use inquiry-based teaching modules and expect expert assistance in their development to enhance the quality of biology learning.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to identify variations in learning media used by biology teachers at State Senior High School 11 Pekanbaru. The study used a qualitative descriptive design with two biology teachers as subjects. Data were collected through interviews and analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results show that teachers consistently use media at every meeting, including technology-based and non-technology media. Technological media such as PowerPoint, videos, animations, digital modules, as well as the use of AI and QR code-based attendance are considered effective in increasing student engagement and understanding of abstract biology material. The main obstacle, namely network and power outages, was overcome by the use of alternative media. These findings indicate that a variety of learning media has been implemented to support the effectiveness of biology learning.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the need for Biology e-modules integrated with faith and piety (IMTAQ) values by teachers and eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Pekanbaru. The e-module is an electronic-based teaching material accessible through computers or Android devices and contains text, images, videos, and learning content integrating IMTAQ values. This study was conducted in the 2025/2026 academic year using a descriptive qualitative and quantitative approach (mixed methods). Data were collected through interviews with Biology teachers and questionnaires distributed to 30 eleventh-grade students. The results showed that teachers had not yet used independently developed e-modules, and the integration of IMTAQ values in Biology learning was still limited and not systematic. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that both teachers and students highly need an IMTAQ-integrated Biology e-module to enhance students’ understanding of the material, learning motivation, and the development of religious character.

Abstract

This study aims to describe science teachers’ perceptions and skills in integrating Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in science learning at SMP Negeri 4 Siak Hulu. The study employed a descriptive approach using a mixed methods design. The research subjects consisted of five science teachers. Data were collected through closed-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Questionnaire data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative techniques by calculating percentages, while interview data were analyzed descriptively using a qualitative approach to support and strengthen the quantitative findings. The results indicate that teachers’ understanding of HOTS is categorized as very good with a percentage of 95%, teachers’ attitudes toward HOTS are categorized as very good with a percentage of 90%, teachers’ skills in planning and implementing HOTS-based learning are categorized as good with a percentage of 85%, and the evaluation of HOTS-based learning is categorized as very good with a percentage of 88%. The interview results reveal that teachers understand HOTS as higher-level thinking skills involving analysis, evaluation, and the application of concepts, and they consider HOTS to be important in science learning. However, teachers still encounter several challenges in implementing HOTS, such as differences in students’ abilities, limited facilities, and the availability of supporting learning materials. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that science teachers have demonstrated good perceptions and skills in integrating HOTS into science learning. Nevertheless, continuous improvement and institutional support are still required to optimize the implementation of HOTS in classroom practice.
