Abstract

This study aims to examine the psychometric quality of a Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) instrument in Biology learning for eleventh-grade students, particularly on the topic of the human movement system. The research employed a quantitative approach using psychometric testing methods. The instrument consisted of 21 multiple-choice items developed based on the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy at cognitive levels C4 (analyzing), C5 (evaluating), and C6 (creating). The research participants were 40 eleventh-grade students of SMAN 1 Pekanbaru selected through simple random sampling. Data analysis included item validity testing, instrument reliability, difficulty index, and discrimination power. The results indicated that eight items were valid and suitable for use, several items required minor and major revisions, and three items were invalid and eliminated. The reliability coefficient obtained was 0.332, indicating low internal consistency; however, this result is still acceptable for a pilot test in an undergraduate research context. Overall, the HOTS instrument on the movement system topic requires further refinement to achieve better psychometric quality and to function effectively as an assessment tool for measuring students’ higher order thinking skills.

Abstract

ABSTRAK This study aims to analyze students’ and teachers’ needs for the development of a biology e-module based on local wisdom of medicinal plants in the digestive system topic. The research employed a mixed-methods approach with a sequential exploratory design, beginning with qualitative data collection followed by quantitative data collection. Qualitative data were obtained through interviews and observations involving an eleventh-grade biology teacher at SMAN 11 Pekanbaru, while quantitative data were collected using a needs analysis questionnaire administered to 33 eleventh-grade students. The questionnaire was developed based on four indicators: the need for engaging and interactive learning materials, the integration of local wisdom related to medicinal plants, the design and features of the e-module, and contextual and applicative learning approaches. Quantitative data were analyzed using percentage techniques. The results showed that students required engaging and interactive digital learning materials (69.21%), the integration of local wisdom related to medicinal plants in biology learning (78.30%), and strongly required e-modules with attractive designs and features (84.36%) as well as contextual learning approaches (82.79%). Furthermore, teacher interview results indicated that although the Merdeka Curriculum has been implemented and local wisdom values have been integrated through the Pancasila Student Profile, the utilization of medicinal plants as learning resources in the digestive system topic has not been optimally implemented. Therefore, the development of a biology e-module based on local wisdom of medicinal plants is considered essential as an instructional innovation to support contextual learning, enhance students’ conceptual understanding, and foster scientific attitudes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the need for developing Student Worksheets (Lembar Kerja Peserta Didik / LKPD) based on the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model at SMP Negeri 6 Siak Hulu. Needs analysis was conducted as the initial stage of development research to determine the suitability of teaching materials with the demands of the Merdeka Curriculum and the characteristics of students. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4D model, limited to the define stage (needs analysis). The research subjects consisted of science teachers and 30 students of SMP Negeri 6 Siak Hulu. Data were collected using interview guidelines and Likert-scale questionnaires covering curriculum alignment, current teaching materials, the need for PBL-based LKPD, teaching methods, students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and learning achievement. The data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative analysis with percentage calculations. The results indicate that both teachers and students require PBL-based LKPD as supporting teaching materials, as the existing materials have not fully facilitated active student engagement and the development of critical thinking skills. Therefore, the development of PBL-based LKPD is considered highly necessary to support meaningful and problem-oriented science learning.

Abstract

Education in the 21st century demands that students cultivate critical thinking abilities as fundamental proficiencies to navigate the swift advancements in science and technology. Nevertheless, biology instruction, especially concerning biodiversity at the senior high school level, continues to be largely passive and contered on rote memorization, thereby constraining the cultivation of students critical thinking competencies. This investigation seeks to undertake an initial evaluation of the formulation of a biodiversity e-module grounded in Problem-Based Learning (PBL), intended to foster the critical thinking skills of tenth-grade senior high school students. The study adopted a Research and Development (R&D) methodology at the preliminary phase, encompassing needs assessment, e-module conceptualization, and preliminary viability evaluation. The participants included tenth-grade students and biology educators from SMA Negeri 5 Pekanbaru, chosen via purposive sampling. Data collection involved validation questionnaires, observational methods, and interviews, with analysis conducted through descriptive quantitative and qualitative approaches. The outcomes reveal that the constructed e- module exhibits substantial validity and applicability in terms of pedagogical strategy, instructional content, and evaluation methods. These results imply that the PBL-based biodiversity e-module is viable for subsequent refinement and possesses the capacity to substantially augment students' critical thinking proficiencies. Consequently, this e-module may function as a pioneering instructional tool that facilitates the enactment of the Merdeka Curriculum within senior high school biology education.

Abstract

Digital literacy is an essential competency in 21st-century Biology learning due to the complexity of biological concepts and the increasing reliance on digital learning resources. However, validated and reliable instruments for measuring students’ digital literacy skills at the senior high school level remain limited. This study aimed to analyze the validity and reliability of a digital literacy instrument for Grade XI students in Biology learning at SMA Negeri 1 Pekanbaru. This research employed a descriptive quantitative approach involving 70 Grade XI science students from classes XI.3 and XI.8. Data were collected using a digital literacy questionnaire developed based on four indicators: internet searching, hypertextual navigation, content evaluation, and knowledge assembly. Instrument validity was tested using Pearson’s Product Moment correlation at a 5% significance level, while reliability was analyzed using Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient. The results indicated that most questionnaire items had correlation coefficients (r count) exceeding the r table value, indicating that the items were valid. Furthermore, the reliability analysis yielded Cronbach’s Alpha values of 0.79 for class XI.3 and 0.88 for class XI.8, both of which exceeded the minimum reliability threshold. These findings demonstrate that the developed digital literacy instrument meets the criteria of validity and reliability and is suitable for measuring students’ digital literacy skills in Biology learning at the senior high school level. This instrument is expected to assist teachers and researchers in obtaining accurate data on students’ digital literacy abilities and in designing more effective Biology learning strategies aligned with 21st-century educational demands.
