Abstract

Teaching English to young learners is not an easy task. Teacher needs to use appropriate learning strategies so the students are engaged and motivated in teaching and learning process. The current study aimed at identifying the teaching English strategies used by fifth grade English teacher and the problems encountered by teacher in teaching English for young learner. This study was a descriptive qualitative research and conducted in SD Suta Dharma Denpasar Bali. In collecting the data, classroom observation and interview were conducted. The result showed that there were eight strategies applied by teacher in teaching English. They are; listen and repeat, listen and do, question and answer, in-pair, cooperative learning, and games. Furthermore, the problems experienced by teacher were lack of media of teaching English and lack of knowledge of strategy in TEYL. The problems occurred because the teacher has a limited knowledge on how to teach English for young learners and the lack of resources of teaching media available in school.

Abstract

Among the four pivotal skills, speaking signifies part of the most essential skill because its role primarily serves as a means of communication. Speaking is an interactive process of developing, creating, constructing and delivering meaning with goal of information exchanges between speaker and hearer. some students still faced some problems to communicate in English. Many students did not show their readiness in speaking English spontaneously.  This study aimed at investigating the significant effect of debate technique on students’ speaking competency, this quasi-experimental research employed 70 student participants from two social science classes, who were randomly assigned to the experimental condition and to the control condition. The instruments used for collecting the data were performance of speaking test and rubric for students’ speaking assessment. The data were analysed by using descriptive and inferential analyses. The result of this study shows that the mean score of experimental group is 79.79, while the mean score of control group is 75.25. The result of t test shows that the value of Sig. (2-tailed) is .000, which indicates a significant mean different. Therefore, this study concludes that debate technique affects students’ speaking competency. In addition to it, the contribution to the teaching of speaking as well as implications for future research are also discussed.

TINDAK TUTUR GURU DALAM PROSES BELAJAR MENGAJAR DI TK WANGUN SESANA PENARUKAN SINGARAJA oleh Made Ratminingsih, NIM 0712011084 Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia Fakultas Bahasa dan Seni ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan menggambarkan dan menjelaskan (1) bentuk tindak tutur guru dalam proses belajar mengajar di TK Wangun Sesana Penarukan Singaraja dan (2) fungsi tindak tutur guru dalam proses belajar mengajar di TK Wangun Sesana Penarukan Singaraja. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut peneliti menggunakan rancangan penelitian deskriptif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah guru dalam proses belajar mengajar di TK Wangun Sesana Penarukan Singaraja. Data penelitian ini adalah ujaran yang terjadi pada guru selama proses belajar mengajar di kelas. Pengumpulan data dalam penelitian ini menggunakan metode observasi, dan wawancara. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan teknik analisis deskriptif melalui prosedur sebagai berikut (1) reduksi data, (2) klasifikasi dan deskripsi data, dan (3) penyimpulan data. Hasil penelitian ini adalah (1) bentuk tindak tutur yang dinyatakan guru. (1) Bentuk tindak tutur yang dinyatakan oleh guru adalah tuturan bermodus deklaratif (5,4%), interogatif (36%), dan imperatif (58,5%). Bentuk tuturan yang digunakan tersebut sesuai dengan fungsi tuturan yang dinyatakan guru yaitu fungsi asertif, direktif, komisif, ekspresif, dan deklaratif. (2) Fungsi tindak tutur yang digunakan oleh guru adalah 5 fungsi makro dan 13 fungsi mikro yang terdiri atas fungsi asertif yang meliputi menginformasikan (4,5%); fungsi direktif yang meliputi memerintah (24.3%), meminta (27%), bertanya (25,2%), mempersilakan (2,7%), menegur (2,7%), mengingatkan (1,8%), menyuruh (1,8%), dan memberi nasihat (1,8%); fungsi komisif (0%); fungsi ekspresif yang meliputi menyapa (0,9%), mengancam (2,7%), dan memotivasi (1,8%); dan fungsi deklaratif yang meliputi melarang (2,7%). Tuturan yang dinyatakan sebagian besar merupakan tuturan langsung dan lugas. Sesuai dengan hasil penelitian ini disarankan kepada sekolah, pendidik, calon pendidik, dan siswa untuk menyeimbangkan proses komunikasi dalam pembelajaran sesuai dengan tuntunan kurikulum. Abstract

Tujuan utama dari penelitian ini adalah: (1) untuk meningkatkan kompetensi komunika-tif siswa SD dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris dengan menggunakan kombinasi teknik Drills dan TPR, (2) untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa  dalam menggunakan aspek kebahasaan, se-perti kosakata, tata bahasa, lafal, kelancaran, dan pemahaman yang terkait dengan keterampilan berbicara. Dengan prosedur penelitian tindakan kelas, hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa peman-faatan kombinasi teknik Drills dan TPR dapat meningkatkan kompetensi komunikatif siswa secara umum dan kemampuan siswa dalam menggunakan aspek kebahasaan, seperti kosakata, tata baha-sa,  lafal, kelancaran, dan pemahaman terhadap materi pembelajaran.Kata kunci: drills, Total Physical Response (TPR), dan kompetensi komunikatif

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada efek yang signifikan pada penggunaan monopoly board game sebagai media pembelajaran terhadap prestasi belajar Bahasa Inggris siswa kelas lima. Penelitian experimen ini mengimplementasikan desain penelitian post-test only control group. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa kelas lima SD di Banjar, Kabupaten Buleleng. Sample penelitian ini adalah 26 siswa kelas lima di SDN 1 Banjar dan 26 siswa kelas lima di SDN 9 Banjar yang ditentukan dengan teknik cluster random sampling. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kelompok siswa di kelas eksperimen mampu menunjukkan prestasi belajar yang lebih baik daripada kelompok siswa kelas control. Hal ini dapat dibuktikan dari hasil t-test dimana nilai tobs adalah 5,819, sedangkan nilai tcv adalah 2,008 (tobs > tcv). Hal ini berarti bahwa penggunaan monopoly board game mampu memberikan pengaruh yang signifikan pada prestasi belajar Bahasa Inggris siswa kelas lima SD. Kata Kunci : prestasi, game, monopoly, pebelajar anak-anak This research was purposed to investigate whether or not there was a significant effect on the use of adapted monopoly board game as a learning media towards the fifth grade students’ English learning achievement. This experimental research implemented post-test only control group design. The population of this research was all the fifth grade students of primary school in Banjar, Buleleng Regency. The samples of this study were 26 students of fifth graders in SDN 1 Banjar and 26 students of fifth graders in SDN 9 Banjar, administered using cluster random sampling technique. The result showed that the group of students in experimental group could perform better achievement rather than the group of students in the control group. It could be proven from result of the t-test in which the tobs was 5.819, meanwhile the tcv was 2.008 (tobs > tcv). It means that the use of monopoly board game gives significant effect to the fifth grade primary school students’ English learning achievement.keyword : board game, English learning achievement, monopoly, young learners

Abstract

Penelitian eksperimental ini difokuskan pada penyelidikani efek dari penggunaan papan permainan jigsaw puzzle pada prestasi belajar bahasa Inggris untuk siswa kelas enam sekolah dasar di Kampung Baru, Kabupaten Buleleng pada tahun akademik 2015/2016. Desain penelitian ini adalah post-test only control group yang menggunakan teknik random sampling dalam penentuan sampel. Kelompok eksperimen dari penelitian ini diberi perlakuan dengan menggunakan papan permainan jigsaw puzzle. Sementara kelompok kontrol yang hanya diberi perlakuan dengan menggunakan teknik mengajar konvensional. Hasil analisis data pada penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa siswa dari kelompok eksperimen mencapai skor yang lebih tinggi daripada siswa dari kelompok kontrol. Hal ini ditunjukkan oleh skor rata-rata mereka di mana siswa kelompok eksperimen mendapat 82.46 dan kelompok kontrol mendapat 72,63. Selain itu, hasil t-test yang berjumlah 6,309 juga membuktikan bahwa papan permaianan jigsaw puzzle memberi pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap prestasi belajar bahasa Inggris untuk siswa kelas enam sekolah dasar di Kampung Baru.Kata Kunci : permaianan papan, prestasi belajar bahasa Inggris, jigsaw puzzle This experimental research focused on investigating the effect of using jigsaw puzzle board game upon student’s English learning achievement for the sixth grade students of elementary school in Kampung Baru, Buleleng regency in academic year 2015/2016. The experimental group of this research was treated by jigsaw puzzle board game. Meanwhile the control group which only treated by using conventional teaching technique. The result of data analysis on this research showed that the students of experimental group achieved a higher score than the students of control group. It was shown by their mean score in which the experimental group students got 82.46 and the control group got 72.63. Moreover, the result of the t-test which was 6.309 also proved that jigsaw puzzle board game gave significant effect upon student’s English learning achievement for the sixth grade students of elementary school in Kampung Baru.keyword : board game, English achievement, jigsaw puzzle

Abstract

Pendidikan inklusif telah meningkat secara signifikan di Singaraja dan membantu siswa dengan kebutuhan khusus dalam memperoleh hak mereka untuk mencapai pendidikan yang layak. Sekolah dan guru di Singaraja memiliki kesiapan yang sangat terbatas baik dalam keterampilan mengajar dan pengembangan materi untuk memenuhi kebutuhan siswa berkebutuhan khusus. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki pelaksanaan pendidikan inklusi oleh guru bahasa Inggris dalam mengajar siswa dengan kesulitan belajar di kelas regular. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Data diperoleh melalui studi dokumen, wawancara, dan observasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru bahasa Inggris menggunakan persiapan pembelajaran yang sama dan memodifikasi beberapa kegiatan dalam proses pembelajaran dan menggunakan penilaian yang berbeda. Hasil penelitian ini juga menyebutkan beberapa faktor pendukung dan tantangan dalam menerapkan pendidikan inklusif. Pendidikan inklusif telah dilaksanakan tetapi masih harus ditingkatkan di Singaraja. Kata Kunci : pendidikan inklusif, pengajaran bahasa Inggris, sekolah regular, siswa dengan kebutuhan khusus, siswa dengan kesulitan belajar, Inclusive education has been increasing significantly in Singaraja and helping the students with special needs as well as getting their right to have proper education. It was found that schools and teachers in Singaraja had very limited preparedness either in teaching skills or the material development to meet the actual needs of students with special needs. This study was aimed at investigating the implementation of inclusive education by English teachers to teach slow learners included in a regular classroom. This research was in the form of qualitative research with a case study approach. The data were obtained through document study, interviews, and observations. The findings show that (1) the English teachers used same teachers’ preparation and modified some activities in learning process and used different assessment, and (2) there are also found supporting and challenging factors in implementing inclusive education. Inclusive education has been implemented but still has to be improved in Singaraja. keyword : inclusive education, regular classroom, students with special needs, slow learner, teaching English

Abstract

Jigsaw Puzzle board game merupakan media pembelajaran yang dapat digunakan untuk mengajar Bahasa Inggris kepada anak usia dini. Pada Jigsaw Puzzle board game terdapat potongan gambar yang sesuai dengan topik yang dipelajari oleh siswa di sekolah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh dari penggunaan Jigsaw Puzzle board game terhadap prestasi belajar Bahasa Inggris siswa kelas lima di Kampung Baru, Buleleng, tahun pelajaran 2015/2016. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimental dengan desain post-test only control group. Sampel dari penelitian ini diambil dengan teknik cluster random sampling. Terdapat dua kelompok yang menjadi sampel dari penelitian ini yaitu SD N 5 Kampung Baru sebagai kelompok eksperimental dan SD N 1 Kampung Baru sebagai kelompok kontrol. Instrumen yang digunakan untuk pengumpulan data adalah post-test, teaching scenario, dan try-out test. Data yang sudah diperoleh, dianalisis menggunakan program SPSS 22 secara deskriptif dan inferensial. Hasil analisis secara statistik menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata dari kelompok eksperimental yang mengikuti kegiatan pembelajaran dengan menggunakan Jigsaw Puzzle board game lebih tinggi (80.61) daripada kelompok kontrol (70.83). Selain itu, terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan antara kelompok eksperimental dan kontrol dimana hasil dari t-test menunjukkan bahwa hasil dari t-observed (tobs) adalah 2.69, melampaui nilai t-critical value (tcv) 1.99 (α=0.05, df=62). Hal tersebut menunjukkan bahwa penggunaan Jigsaw Puzzle board game memberikan pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap kelompok eksperimental. Sehingga, dapat disimpulkan bahwa guru dapat menggunakan Jigsaw Puzzle board game sebagai media pembelajaran yang efektif untuk meningkatkan prestasi belajar Bahasa Inggris siswa kelas lima di Kampung Baru.Kata Kunci : jigsaw puzzle, prestasi belajar bahasa Inggris, media pembelajaran, siswa Sekolah Dasar Jigsaw puzzle board game is a teaching media for teaching English to young learners. It contains interlocking shapes of picture that are in accordance with topics learned by the students at school. This study was aimed at investigating the effect of Jigsaw Puzzle board game towards the fifth grade students’ English learning achievement in Kampung Baru, Buleleng, in the academic year 2015/2016. This study was an experimental research with post-test only control group design. The sample of this study was determined by cluster random sampling technique. Thereby, there were two groups became the sample of this study, namely SD Negeri 5 Kampung Baru as the experimental group and SD Negeri 1 Kampung Baru as the control group. The instruments used to collect and support the data were post-test, teaching scenario, and try-out test. The data obtained in this study were descriptively and inferentially analyzed by using SPSS program 22. The result of the statistics analysis showed that the mean score of experimental group resulted in higher score (80.61) than the control group (70.83). Furthermore, the result of the independent sample t-test showed that there was significant difference between the score of the experimental and control group in which the t-observed (tobs) was 2.69 exceeding the t-critical value (tcv), 1.99 (α=0.05, df=62). The result indicated that there was significant effect of using Jigsaw Puzzle board game towards the fifth grade students’ English learning achievement. Abstract

The study aimed at developing a multilingual thematic picture dictionary as a media to support literacy in English language for fifth grade elementary school students in Bali. This study used Design and Development (D&D) model by Richey and Klein (2014). The steps were (1) analysis, (2) design, (3) development, and (4) evaluation. Fifth grade elementary school students and English teachers from rural and urban area were the research subjects. They were chosen through purposeful sampling technique. In analysis, the data were collected through observation, interview, questionnaire, and document analysis. The result of needs analysis found that there is an urgency of developing multilingual thematic picture dictionary. The students needed dictionary while learning English because it helped them in finding the word’s meaning independently and could help them prepare for additional point while participating in teaching learning process content validity judgement showed that the dictionary was highly valid to criteria of a good multilingual thematic picture dictionary. The result showed that the multilingual thematic picture dictionary was categorized as ‘excellent’ media. Thus, it can be used as a media to support fifth grade elementary school students in developing their literacy skills.

Abstract

Students’ reading interest influenced students’ reading comprehension. Thus, they needed a strategy and media in reading.  This study aimed to find out the effect of the implementation of the TPS strategy combined with Kahoot! on students reading comprehension. This research was experimental. The research design was post-test only control group design. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. The result showed the mean score of the experimental group was 69.33, while the mean score of the control group was 74.67. The result t observed was higher than t critical (2.004 > -1.116) and (2.004 > -1.152). It indicated that accepted the null hypothesis. It concluded that there was no significant effect of the implementation of the TPS strategy combined with Kahoot! of students reading comprehension. The TPS strategy can use for different skills.
